PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 THE SCHOOL DAY Pre-school, Early Years and Primary Years Programme • 08.30am – School begins with Registration • 3.20pm – Lessons end *See appendix 3 – PYP Timetable Middle Years Programme & Diploma Programme • 08.30am – School begins with Registration • 4.10pm – Lessons end *See appendix 4 – MYP & DP Timetable The school premises will be open every school day between: 07h30-18h30 and the underground parking facilities are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Additional parking is available outside the school building. STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is that students are in the classroom on time in order to avoid disrupting the class as well as affecting the rhythm of a child’s morning. A student will be marked as Late if he/she arrives after morning registration at 8:40 am. All students arriving late must sign the late book in the reception area. An excused late arrival includes such situations as a medical appointment, family emergency or extenuating circumstances and must be documented by a parent note, email or phone call. Reasons such as car trouble, personal business, heavy traffic, among others, while understandable, are not considered excused situations. If a student is continually late, the Home-room Tutors must inform the relevant Programme Coordinator. Five or more unjustified absences and/or less than 80% attendance is considered a failing condition. BEGINNING OF DAY ARRANGEMENTS • International Sharing School opens its gates at 7:30 am; • Students should be in their classrooms by 8:30 am; International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark

END OF DAY ARRANGEMENTS • International Sharing School closes its gates at 6:30 pm; • If due to exceptional circumstances parents cannot get to school on time to collect their children, they should contact the school office. STUDENT SCHOOL UNIFORM At International Sharing School all students from Nursery to DP 1 should wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school-organized event outside normal school hours, unless exempted from doing so by the Pedagogical Director on designated days. Effective teaching and learning require organization, and this starts with a smart and tidy appearance which helps to instil discipline and pride in students’ appearance. Aims and objectives Our policy is based on the notion that a school uniform: • Promotes a sense of identity and pride for students attending the school; • Engenders a feeling of community and belonging; • Is practical and smart; • Makes students feel equal to their peers. Our Uniform consists of: • A white polo with the school logo; • A white t-shirt with the school logo (Pre-School and Early Years); • A grey jumper with the school logo; • Dark blue school trousers (dark blue jeans are acceptable); • Plain black/brown school shoes; • Blue winter jacket with school logo. Roles and responsibilities Principal and Pedagogical Director Monitors and reviews the school uniform policy. Coordinators Implement and monitor the policy on a day-to-day basis; International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark

PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 SMOKE FREE CAMPUS International Sharing School is a smoke-free campus. Smoking and the use of all tobacco products is banned for everybody in or on all school facilities and property. This includes a ban on smoking in the school bus and vans used to transport faculty and students on fieldtrips or other school events. DRUGS Our school has zero tolerance to drugs found on school premises. Students found with substances in their possession will be immediate expel from school. EVACUATION PROCEDURES Fire If you detect a fire in the building, you should only attempt to tackle it if you have received training in the appropriate use of fire extinguishers. If you have received such training, please ensure that you know where the fire extinguishers are located in the buildings and what type they are. When you hear the alarm: • If you are a member of the non-teaching staff or if you are a teacher who is not in a lesson you should leave the building by the nearest exit and make your way to the meeting point; • If you are in charge of students when the alarm sounds, you should ensure that the students in your care leave the building by the nearest exit in a quiet orderly manner, close the windows and doors of your room then accompany your class to the meeting point where they will line up in their tutor groups, • Coordinators should take up their position at the meeting point. • Tutors are responsible for checking that all students are present by using the class list available in the classroom and confirm to the principal/pedagogical director that all students in their group have been accounted for by a visual red/green card. • Tutors should stay with their students and ensure that they await instructions in a quiet, orderly fashion; • Teachers must congregate together in an allocated area. MYP coordinator is responsible for verifying that all teachers are present and confirm to the principal/pedagogical director; • Visitors please assemble together at the meeting point. The meeting point is at the end of the road outside the school. Please ensure that you know where the meeting point is located. International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark
PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 Essential points during an evacuation of the building: • The buildings must be cleared in an orderly fashion as quickly as possible (no running); • The staff responsible for checking the building should ensure the building is evacuated. The fire wardens and area of responsibility are: 1. Ground floor classrooms and bathrooms: PYP Coordinator 2. Upper floor classrooms and bathrooms: MYP Coordinator 3. Administration room and kitchen: School secretary 4. Garage: School receptionist • Those taking registers must act as quickly as possible at the meeting point in order to provide information about the status of students, staff and visitors; • Under no circumstance should anyone attempt to re-enter any building until the all-clear has been given by the fire brigade. • Everyone must wait for instructions in an orderly fashion, in silence; • Once the fire brigade has arrived and the nature and location of the fire has been ascertained, it may be possible to enter the building. This decision will be taken by the fire brigade. Earthquake Once you hear the earthquake alarm you will guide your student to follow the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” procedure, a quake‐safe action designed to protect all students and staff and prevent injuries from falling furniture and flying objects that can become projectiles during ground shaking. Hold on to furniture legs if furniture moves. If outside, move away from buildings. To demonstrate control of the situation, teachers might consider counting very loudly over the noise of the earthquake (most earthquakes last for 4 to 30 seconds, a very large earthquake might last 60 second). Ensure mobility impaired students are moved to safety spot, for example the doorway. After the earthquake: • Under no circumstance should anyone attempt to leave the building until the all-clear has been given. Everyone must wait in silence; • Once the evacuation order has been given, take students out of building to the meeting point; International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark
PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 • Request assistance from Evacuation Team for mobility impaired students if necessary; • Get first aid or other help to students who need it; • Check that all students are present; • Calm frightened students. *See appendix 5 – Evacuation Procedure STAFF LUNCH International Sharing School offers all staff daily lunch in the school refectory. Dining is available between 12h00-14h00. Staff wishing to bring their own lunch may reheat their food using the microwaves available in the school refectory. STUDENT LUNCH International Sharing School provides daily lunch for all students. All students are expected to eat in the refectory and in accordance with their timetabled lunch break. Students are not permitted to eat in the classrooms and along the corridors. Before the start of the new school year parents are required to bring the food allergy or intolerance form completed and the necessary documentation from their family doctor. Parents should also ensure that children are aware of their allergy or intolerance and to inform the school office if they have any concern about what they are eating. ASSEMBLIES PYP weekly assemblies will take place every Monday morning at 8.40. Each grade level is required to organize and present at least one assembly every six weeks. These assemblies and gatherings are related to the IB Learner Profile/Units of inquiry and are designed primarily for the students. Parents are always welcome to join us and celebrate together our students’ achievements. MYP assemblies will take place monthly or when necessary. BIRTHDAY PARTIES At International Sharing School, we enjoy honouring students on their birthday. We announce the birthday child’s name on our Monday morning PYP assembly. Students and teachers will sing “Happy Birthday”. International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark
PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 Due to the current pandemic, we have been avoiding accepting outside food to guarantee close control of everything we provide our students with. After further advice, we concluded it is safe to open that restriction and allow birthday cakes to be brought by parents for their child and his or her classmates. If you are buying a cake, we ask you to make sure it is from a fully authorised bakery who follows all the hygiene and safety measures. Please ask the bakery to provide you with the recipe technical sheet. This document is compulsory when bringing a cake to our school. If you are baking the cake, the same technical sheet is required which includes all ingredients used and the date the cake was baked. The school is also offering the possibility of baking a cake for your child. Please find in attachment the recipe technical sheet of our cakes and price. Please, talk to the classroom teacher in advance to check students' allergies, food restrictions, and the best time to bring the cake. We take great pride in making your child feel special on their birthday. FIELD TRIPS Field trips are regarded as an important dimension to learning and all students are expected to participate in planned activities. A field trip is an educational activity which involves all members of a class outside of the classroom. It will involve prior preparation for the activity and follow-up evaluation and work in class after the trip. Students take field trips several times during the school year. The purpose and arrangements for a particular field trip will be determined by the teacher. Parents will be informed in advance of a field trip. In some instances, parents may be invited to assist as chaperones. AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of sporting, aesthetic, recreational and cultural extracurricular activities. These take place after school and are organised in 3 terms by teachers/teaching assistants, external instructors and parent volunteers. Parents with a particular expertise who would like to offer an after-school activity are encouraged to contact the school. Each year a variety of different activities are offered to students. PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 fully commit themselves to their academic requirements as well as experience a diverse range of after-school activities. Once the school day ends end, students will be accompanied to their respective activity. At the end of the activity, students will be accompanied to a designated area where parents will collect them TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA, MOBILE PHONES Following what is written in the Parent's Handbook (which I will again add in attachment) students are permitted to bring mobile phones to school, but all mobile phones must be turned off and kept in their backpacks/lockers during class time, from the moment they arrive at school. Students can only use their mobile phones in class when instructed by their class teacher for classroom activities. However, students are not required to bring a mobile phone to school. Should a faculty member see a student using his/her mobile phone during break, lunchtime or lesson time without given permission, the mobile telephone will be confiscated and passed on to the Programme Coordinator. The student will then have to collect the mobile telephone at the end of the day. Repeated violations may require further action. Under no circumstance should a student be contacting a parent directly regarding any issue. All communication must be made through the Office, Homeroom Tutor or Programme Coordinator, depending on the issue. The use of iPods and personal listening devices is not permitted during school hours, including breaks and lunchtime. Within some creative and performing arts classes, exceptions may be made. These rules are in the best interests of students. Social interaction is an important part of a child's growth, and the use of personal listening devices at school greatly limits this interaction. Students will be allowed to use their phones, laptops and iPad from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm in the refectory area while waiting for parents' arrival. All staff are expected to set an example regarding Mobile Phones and iPods. Teachers are expected to keep their mobile phone in their bag, only using it during lunch and break time. TOYS AND PETS Expensive toys, electronic toys, plastic swords, guns, weapons, daggers or knives are not permitted on campus. Students should be informed that they are responsible for any object brought to school. At no point should a student’s personal item be allowed to disrupt classroom instruction. In general, they should not be brought to school. An exception to this is in the Infants, International Sharing School - Taguspark Avenida Dr. Mário Soares, 14 - 2740-119 Porto Salvo | +351 92 444 7 666 | office@taguspark.sharingschool.org www.sharingschool.org | www.facebook.com/sharingschooltaguspark
PARENTS HANDBOOK 2020/2021 where students are encouraged to bring in a comfort toy during their settling in period if it helps to settle the child. The school accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to students’ valuable personal items. We have a school pet, George, a great Dane dog and a Pyrrhura Parrot, called Mango. Along with these two pets, every PYP classroom will/can have a classroom pet. Students are responsible of taking care of their pet. Arrangements with the teacher should be made if the child/parent wishes to take the classroom pet for the weekend/holidays. Home pets are also allowed in our school but before any animal is brought into our campus, both classroom teacher and programme coordinator must approve the visit. STATIONERY SUPPLIES All school stationery supplies are provided by the school and will be available in the classrooms. In the event of loss or damage to school provided stationery, parents will be required to purchase the needed items. LOST AND FOUND International Sharing School is a secure campus and a caring, principled community. Students are expected to take due care of their belongings and not leave valuable items unattended as this is inviting the potential for things to go missing. If a student misplaces an item they should check at the school office or at the school reception. Office staff will be happy to assist students and parents in locating missing items. To allow an easy finding of lost items, parents are asked to help by labelling clothing and other items with child's full name. Please be informed that any unclaimed items will be donated to local charities, typically right before the Summer break. Students are encouraged to hand in found items to the school reception or teacher.
