Overview of Hazard Incidences in May 2021 In May 2021, 11 hazards took place across Bangladesh i.e Fire, Heat Wave, Nor’wester, Lightning, Cyclone, Boat Capsize, Earthquake, Bridge Collapse, Landslide, Wall Collapse, and Wild Animal Attack. In May 2021, Covid-19 affected a total of 41,408 persons across the country among where 1,169 died and 58,946 recovered. NDRCC reported a total of 485 Fire incidents throughout the country among which Dhaka division faced 127, Khulna division 98, and Chattogram division 104 of fire this month. However, from NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 25 fire incidents were found in which 8 people died and 14 sustained injuries. May 2021 witnessed mild to moderate Heatwave in all 8 divisions. The highest temperature was recorded 39.8°C in Khulna. Nor’wester hit 8 districts throughout this month in which 4 people died. Boat capsized in 2 districts resulted in taking 28 lives. Moreover, 66 people died and 8 were injured in 38 districts due to Lightning. Two Bridges collapsed in separate districts and communication was highly disrupted. Five Earthquakes took place in the Sylhet region this month with no casualties reported. Wild elephant attacks killed 4 in 3 districts. In addition, a child died in a landslide, and one was killed due to wall collapse this month.
Description of Hazard Incidents in May 2021 Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh The Covid-19 pandemic had affected with proportionately fewer impacts throughout this month compared to April 2021 in all the 64 districts across Bangladesh. The number of identified patients with Covid-19 was 41,408 among which 58,946 persons recovered and 1,169 persons died. From the very first case identified on March 8, 2020, the total number of Covid-19 patients is 7,95,078 among which 13,904 died and 7,28,061 recovered up to May 2021. Dhaka reported having sustained the first hit on 4th May having no impact reported. On 7th May, Nor’wester blew over Nilphamari district in which 2 people died and few houses were damaged. One woman died on 9th May in Sirajganj due to Nor’wester. The hazard hit 5 villages of Jamalpur on 15th May which destroyed 300 trees, 50 house damage, and 1 injury. 1 person died in Brahmanbaria and Shariatpur respectively on 16th May in Nor’wester. The hazard hit Faridpur and Chuadanga on 27th May leaving more than 50 families homeless, 200 trees damaged and two villages destroyed. The affected districts are namely Cox’s Bazar, Bhola, Feni, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Chattogram, Nilphamari, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Chuadanga, Barisal, Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Noakhali, Patuakhali, Kishorganj, Chapainawabganj, Brahmanbaria, Rajshahi, Meherpur, Netrokona, Faridpur, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Chuadanga, and Satkhira. (Source: NDRCC Daily Disaster Report, May 2021) (See Annex-4 for Upazila wise details) Cyclone Yaas Tidal influences due to cyclone Yaas, affected 9 districts and 27 Upazilas on 26th May. 17567 people took shelter in the shelter center. Cyclone Yaas has disrupted the lives of at least 11,309 families in 23 chars of coastal district Bhola. At least 1, 70,000 people have been affected by the cyclone. 659 villages of 51 unions of the island district Bhola have been affected. 3,579 families are homeless now and 7,370 had
their homes partially damaged. In 50 places, 16 protective dams of the flood control embankment have been destroyed. 134 animals have died from the cyclone. (Source: NDRCC Daily Disaster Report, May 2021) (See Annex-5 for Upazila wise details) Boat Capsize On 3rd May 2021, in Madaripur District Shibchar Upazila a speed boat was capsized when collided with a sand-loaded cargo. The accident killed 26 persons. BDT 20000 was delivered among the family member of the deceased. Another Boat/troller Capsize occurred on 27th May 2021 in Shariatpur district, Zanjira Upazila in river Padma by sudden storm where 2 died and 2 reported missing. (Source: https://www.prothomalo.com, May 2020) Earthquake In May 2021 Sylhet felt tremor five times among which on May 29th 4 earthquakes took place. The origin of the earthquake was Sylhet, and the maximum scale was recorded at 4.1 magnitudes on ricktar scale. 24 buildings of the city have been sealed off this month as a precautionary measure. No casualty have been reported1, only a six storied building leaned which was later shut down. (Source:https://bdnews24.com, May 2021). Bridge Collapse Total 5 bridges collapsed in 4 districts, i.e Satkhira, Cox’s Bazar, Mymensingh, Potuakhali in May 2021. The first bridge collapse of the month took place in Satkhira district Asasunni Upazila on 24th May 2021. A loaded truck was damaged in the incident. On the same day due to the collapse of a bridge in Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district, the communication between Gorakghata and Badarkhali road via Shaplapur had been completely disrupted. Another bridge collapse occurred in Mymensingh Gafargaon Upazila on 25th May 2021 leaving communication disrupted between Gafargaon Upazila and hossenpur Upazila, reports Ekattor tv. Thousands of people, about 20 villages have been facing serious problems as a bridge on a river in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari Upazila collapsed around midnight 30th May 2021. The first one took place in a brick kiln on 9th May 2021 in Kustia Doulotpur Upazila where 1 died and 1 sustained injury. Another Wall collapse occurred in a brick kiln on 11th May 2021, in Sirarganj Sadar Upazila, Sirajganj where 1 died and 2 were injured. GoB Response in May 2021 Response to Covid-19 The government managed to vaccinate 1st dose of covid-19 vaccines to 5,820,015 people starting from January 27, 2021, to May 31. From April 08, 2021, to May 31, 2021, a total of 4,161,414 2nd doses vaccines were administered. However, 11,952 general beds, 1,128 Intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 23,102 Oxygen cylinders, 1589 high flow nasal cannula, and 1467 oxygen concentrators are available in the hospitals across the country up to May 31, 2021, reports in dedicated government website for covid-19. To provide support in bordering areas i.e Jashore, Khulna, Brahmanbariya, Jhinadah, Kushtia, Chuadanga, and in Narail amid covid-19 surge, MoDMR has allotted BDT 4,500,000. MoDMR has also allotted 5300 packets of dry and other food items for the most vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. Response to Nor’wester Two bundles Corrugated Iron Sheets and 26 thousands tk given for 16th May nor’wester. 10 kg rice and 1 kg pulse provided for each affected family for the nor’wester of 27th May. Response to Cyclone Yaas The government allocated a total of BDT BDT 732,00,000 and 16,500 packets of dry food for the cyclone- affected people in the affected districts. (Source: NDRCC Daily Disaster Report, May 12, 2021). Conclusion Several devastating incidents took place in May 2021. Fire, Nor’wester, lightning resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. Cyclone Yash caused inundation in coastal districts which amounted to huge economic loss, disruption, and distress. Moreover, the almost unbearably hot scorched parts of Bangladesh throughout the month. The government responded to Fire, Nor’wester, Cyclone, and Boat capsize with immediate effect, and removing cyclone-prone vulnerable population to shelter centers as a pre-disaster measure resulted in a lesser loss of life and asset.
