CARERS 2018 28 JUNEAND Advice for parents and carers ANDPARENTS 27FOR Parents and carers are very welcome to our Open Days. We know that many of you will have had to take a day off work or travel a long distance to be here today so we hope the advice below helps you ADVICE make the most of your time here in Oxford. – We run a variety of talks covering topics we think will be of particular interest to you. These include talks in the Open Day Information Centre about supporting an applicant and how to prepare for the transition from school to university (see page 14) as well as talks in colleges and departments (highlighted in the listings on pages 8–13). – Parents and carers are also welcome to attend many of the other events in the programme but sometimes if a room is full and students might miss out, we will ask you to give up your place. – Choosing a course is the most important decision for your child to make, so if they are not sure what they want to study, we suggest they focus on this. We advise all visitors to attend events in subject departments first and look around colleges later. – Not every course is offered at every college so please check the table on page 6 showing which courses are offered by which college before deciding which ones to visit. – Oxford’s Common Framework for Admissions means that the admissions process is the same at every college and your child will have a similar chance of being successful with their application no matter which college they apply to. You don’t need to attend more than one admissions talk in the day. – Be aware that you are unlikely to have enough time to visit as many colleges as you might like – even visiting one or two will give you a good idea how college life here works. – There will be lots of opportunities to talk to staff and students throughout the day so please encourage your child to ask lots of questions and to plan their day realistically using the information and advice in this guide. 5

JUNE 2018 AND 28COLLEGES Lady Margaret Hall University College St Edmund Hall St Benet's Hall Queen's (The) St Catherine's Regent's Park Wycliffe Hall New College 27VISITING Somerville Worcester Pembroke Magdalen Mansfield St Peter's St Hugh's St Anne's St Hilda's St John's Wadham Merton Lincoln Trinity Oriel Frequently asked questions: Which college is best for my subject? Colleges do not have specialist subjects. Be assured that you will get very high standards of teaching in any of the subjects a college offers. Which college is easiest to get into? None are easy to get into! All colleges have signed up to a common set of rules and apply the same criteria to assessing applications. If one college is over- subscribed, then candidates are reallocated to another college. Many students end up getting offered a place at a college they didn’t apply to. Can’t someone else choose for me? Yes. If you don’t want to, you don’t have to choose a college at all. Many students make an “open” application. This means they don’t name a college on their UCAS form and the University allocates the college which will consider them. Don’t worry if you feel you have no strong preference for one college or another. Visiting any of the colleges will give you a good idea of how the college system works. This information is correct as of March 2018, but is subject to change. For marked courses, available course combinations vary between colleges. Information about all of these considerations is available on the University website and in the Check ox.ac.uk/whichcolls for the latest information prospectus, which you can pick up at venues today. 7
