As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, a colleague found a toolkit online that businesses can use to help wellbeing in the workplace. I suggested the Chamber team all take a topic and write about our views and experiences in an open and real way. I thought this would be easy for me, but I obviously had a few lessons to learn about vulnerability. My lesson: there is a big difference between stating facts about your life compared to how those facts affect you emotionally. The exercise resulted in self- awareness for my colleagues and me. If you would like an insight to the Chamber team’s vulnerabilities, check out page 15 and consider doing this yourself. Local Government authorities have a direct impact on the way we live and operate in Hawke’s Bay. No matter who you are or what you do, the individuals you vote for (or don’t vote for) will make decisions on such issues as water quality, rates, housing, healthcare and regional assets like the Napier Port. You have the right to say who will lead our cities, healthcare and region, so ensure you get your vote in by October 12. Karla Lee CEO Hawkes Bay Chamber of Commerce
Protect your business from this common cyber scam It’s easy to fall for and can go unnoticed. But if you know what to look for and put these four security measures in place, you’ll be in a good position to keep you and your business safe. In association with The scam Last year, CERT NZ received a report from a small business that was receiving emails from an attacker pretending to be a recognised supplier. The emails contained fake invoices and were attempting to trick the business into paying the invoiced amount into an attacker’s account. The emails seemed legitimate. For example, they included information about recent goods the business had requested and the right costs. However, there were small differences in the sender's email address that fortunately staff noticed before any payments were made. With the help of their IT provider, the business discovered that an employee’s email account had been hacked. The account had a simple password, making it easy for the attacker to get into the account and forward any emails containing words like "account", "invoice" and "pay" to an external address belonging to the attacker. The information in these emails gave the attacker enough details about the business’s billing cycles and behaviours to create fake invoices that looked legitimate. In the past year, CERT NZ received more than 2,000 cyber security FACT reports from New Zealand businesses and organisations. The reported financial loss was over $5.2 million.
Get protected Many businesses think a cyber attack won’t happen to them. To help keep you and your business safe, put the following four measures in place. Manage your passwords Have a strong and different password on each of your accounts, like email and software programmes. You might use a password manager, an app that securely stores account logins. That way you only have to remember one password. Keeping your data safe with a password manager — CERT NZ Turn on two-factor authentication Add an extra layer of security to your business email accounts by applying two-factor authentication (2FA). It’s often a password and something else, like a code that is sent to your mobile phone. Two-factor authentication as a security tool for business — CERT NZ Check your privacy settings on social media Updating your social media privacy settings to only friends and family makes it hard for cyber criminals to find out information about you. Cyber security and social media — CERT NZ Update the software on your devices Don’t ignore software updates when they are available. Try to action them as soon as possible. It’ll help protect against bugs and viruses. If you have a cyber security issue Report any issues to CERT NZ right away. You’ll be asked to describe the cyber security issue you’re experiencing. CERT NZ will then identify it and let you know what the next steps are to resolve it. Along with providing you with help, CERT NZ uses the information you share to create advice and guidance for others who might be going through the same issue. Any information you provide is confidential, unless you give consent to share the details of your report. Report an issue — CERT NZ Cyber Smart Week 2019 CERT NZ will be holding Cyber Smart Week on 14-18 October. More information on how to get involved and help keep your business safe online will be available from late September. Cyber Smart Week 2019 — CERT NZ
Services lead GDP growth 19 September 2019 Gross domestic product increased 0.5 percent in the June 2019 quarter, following a 0.6 percent rise in the March 2019 quarter, Stats NZ said today. “Service industries, which represent about two-thirds of the economy, were the main contributor to GDP growth in the quarter, rising 0.7 percent off the back of a subdued result in the March 2019 quarter,” national accounts senior manager Gary Dunnet said. The service industries recorded broad based growth, with eight of the 11 industries showing positive results in the June 2019 quarter. Household expenditure on services saw a corresponding increase, rising by 0.5 percent. Goods producing industries fell 0.2 percent in the June quarter, driven by declines in manufacturing and construction. “Both of these industries rose in the March 2019 quarter,” Mr Dunnet said. “This quarter, lower investment in non-residential building and a decline in food, beverage, and tobacco manufacturing led to the falls.” The size of New Zealand’s economy in annual current price terms hit a milestone in the June 2019 quarter, reaching $300 billion for the first time. “It took about fourteen years for the economy to go from $100 billion to $200 billion, and nine years to reach $300 billion,” Mr Dunnet said. Gross domestic product, industry growth and contribution to growth, June 2019 quarter Image shows a column graph, pie chart, and bar chart showing growth, share of the economy, and contribution to growth in the June 2019 quarter for the primary, goods-producing, and services industries. Column chart shows the service industries grew 0.7 percent, primary grew 0.7 percent, and goods-producing declined 0.2 percent. Pie chart shows that service industries make up about two-thirds of GDP, goods- producing about one-fifth and primary about one-twentieth. Bar chart shows industry contribution to the GDP growth rate: primary 0.0 percentage points, goods-producing 0.0 percentage points, and services 0.5 percentage points.
“All of Hawke’s Bay’s five councils will have ballot boxes in their customer service centres and some libraries... if you would rather return your voting papers by post, they must be mailed by 7th October at the very latest or they may not reach the electoral officers in time.
Moving away from cheques Inland Revenue is becoming increasingly digital in the way we work. Soon this will include a move away from cheques. This also reflects our customers’ preferences with cheque usage declining every year. Last year cheques only accounted for 5% of payments and some people who used cheques also used other payment methods. Most of our customers are now choosing to pay their taxes electronically. From 1 March 2020, we will no longer accept cheques. This includes post-dated cheques (cheques dated after 1 March 2020). We are encouraging cheque-paying customers to get a head start on finding other convenient and secure payment options that work for them. We do appreciate that for some people this will be a significant change that will take some adjustment. The good news is that there are lots of faster, cheaper and safer ways to pay – electronically or in person. WAYS TO PAY We recommend you contact your bank about online banking options such as: • direct credit payments • automatic payments. Many banks offer a dedicated tax payment option. You can pay online through Inland Revenue: • Use your credit or debit card to make online payments through our website. Visit ird.govt.nz/pay. • You can pay by direct debit and make debit card and credit card payments securely through myIR online services. Visit our website (ird.govt.nz) and login or register for myIR. • If you’re overseas you can pay us using a fees-free money transfer service. Search for “make a payment” on our website (ird.govt.nz) for more information. In person: • You can drop into a Westpac bank and pay your taxes over the counter by cash or eftpos. You can only do this at Westpac branches. • You can also use one of Westpac’s Smart ATMs. If you can access the internet, go to Westpac.co.nz to find a Westpac branch or Smart ATM. Find out more To help you find a payment option that works for you: • Talk to your bank about their online banking facilities. • You can also find out more about your payment options on the Inland Revenue website. Visit ird.govt.nz/pay. • If you have a tax agent, you may also like to talk to them about your payment options. If you need help getting started with online banking: • For help getting started with online banking, check out any free digital courses offered by your bank or local community groups.
Travelling extensively through Asia, Europe and the USA, experiencing other unique cultures, locations and people has inspired me to value the connections and networks we make wherever we are in the world and to strive to challenge ourselves continually. It has always been nice to return home to the Welcome Hawke’s Bay Bay as we only appreciate what we have on our Chambers new doorstep when we leave it for some time. This Communication & is reflected in the current trend that more people are not only returning to Hawke’s Bay Membership Coordinator - but choosing this astonishing region to settle Rachael Wallis in. We equally see this as a central and vibrant hub of commerce and business. The harmony between work and personal life can be achieved. We see many individuals and families making a lifestyle choice to either work and live in the Bay or relocate here and commute to work elsewhere. I have an enormous appreciation for everything my brilliant hometown has to offer us all. Not only the beautiful climate, the business opportunities & growth potential that the area is experiencing and the superb food and wine we get to enjoy - I couldn’t think of a better place to live! My career spans over several businesses, most recently as an insurance broker for Rothbury. For 15 years prior, I was a Business Development Manager based in Hawkes Bay and found myself working with organisations across NZ. Operating in this varied role contributed to my passion for building and maintaining close client relationships and in recognising the value of professional membership bodies and affiliations. My goal is adding value to your business by connecting and representing you; as a valued member of the Chamber. I look forward to meeting you personally over the upcoming months and welcome any feedback that you may have, to continue to assist you in your business. Let’s talk soon!
‘BEACHED FOREST’ ART INSTALLATION AND WORKSHOPS At the front of everyone’s mind is climate change and how this is going to impact our next generation. Our guest artist Susan Mabin is an award winning Hawke’s Bay multimedia artist concerned with environmental themes. She spends many hours combing the shoreline for materials that she transforms into artworks. Along our beaches lies a mountain of rubbish and Susan’s work helps to bring this issue to our attention. “No one is an island, therefore hearing and sharing our life journey is vital with friends, family and colleagues. I can’t live for another person, but I can walk beside them, cheering them on or catching them when they fall. I have walked beside my niece since she was born, cheering her on when she played netball, won awards and received her university degree. I have also been there to wipe away her tears and hug her in happy and sad times. This connection is one of many I cherish that makes my journey richer and feeds my soul”. Karla "Active to me is more than just physical activity; it is equally about exercising one’s mind, body and soul. It is who I am and what I need in times of difficulties and emotional upheavals. I enjoy walking along the beach, feeling the sun on my face taking time to reflect about my day, where I am and where I want to be. Keeping active not only keeps me fit but provides clarity in my life". Rachael “Giving to those I care about brings me joy; finding that little thing. It may be time gardening with them, sharing knowledge, finding a small precious ‘something’ I think they’ll like or giving them my understanding when they are in hardship, raises my spirit. By being observant and watching those around us, we instinctively know what is needed to help them and in turn, help ourselves”. Christine. “At least once a day, I stop for a few minutes to appreciate the sky, landscape or sea. This puts things into perspective for me and motivates me to be present in the moment. Seeing my daughter laugh out loud when I embarrass myself, then tell me I’m a cool Mum, or hearing a friend sing because she is unintentionally caught up in a happiness bubble are snippets of my daily life that make me stop, take notice, smile and be grateful for my surroundings and the people in it”. Karla “Like many, I am a full time working mum. I have a career that keeps me on my toes, three children, a partner, a home, two cats + a dog; there are days where life feels like chaos! If I don’t look after myself, my mind is like a large pot of spaghetti, jumbled and on the brink of boiling over. I get tired and burnt out, and I’m not much use to anyone when that happens. I also overthink a lot. A work friend suggested that knitting might be a good way to clear my mind and kindly bought me a pair of needles and a ball of yarn. I’d never knitted before, she was right, it was calming and allows me to switch off to what’s around me, helping me reset. When I am feeling overwhelmed, I’ll take five and pick up the knitting needles”... Lisa The Chamber team have picked up the five wellbeing titles and shared how we personally take specific actions to help our own wellbeing. This has been a great exercise for us and I would recommend you trying it with your team.
