Species diversity in Hong Kong
Species diversity is relatively low in Hong Kong, with only 18 species recorded in
this region, where Palpatophora utiliformis grandis is the dominant species.
However, exotic species such as those in the Kirigami order or Diplacofelis wangi
do exist.

This document aims to record each species found in Hong Kong in detail.

                                                                                     3

Species rarity in Hong Kong
The rarity of species can be determined by knowing how common they are in
supermarkets and stores, how many brands use them, their hosts, etc. Some species
might require more research to determine its rarity accurately. The list below
displays the 18 species found in Hong Kong from common to rare. Species known
to have existed but having no collected specimens are italicized:

Palpatophora utiliformis grandis
Palpatophora utiliformis
Quadratopalpus ilex

Archignathidae: Diplacofelis wangi
Thought to exist only in Japan, this species has in fact
existed in Hong Kong for quite some time, which can
be dated back to May 2020 or earlier. Parknshop’s
bread brand Baker’s Choice and AEON’s brand
Topvalu had been found using D. wangi. Specimen of Baker’s
Choice D. wangi was first collected on 8 February 2021, and
specimen of Topvalu D. wangi was first collected on 9 March
2021. A blue specimen with no markings was collected before 13ills’ blue D. wangi
October 2018 by 13ills, but no host or brand information was
available. The reason D. wangi is one of the rarest species is that
D. wangi can only be found in three AEON store as of the date
this document is written.

D. wangi was originally used by Baker’s Choice for all their
bread products, but Baker’s Choice shifted to P. utiliformis
grandis from D. wangi since the beginning of March 2021, D. wangi preying on
                                                                      Baker’s Choice bread
making D. wangi an endangered species in Hong Kong. The last
sighting of Baker’s Choice D. wangi since the beginning of
March was on a Baker’s Choice premium product. It is
unknown whether Baker’s Choice limited the use of D. wangi to
premium products only, as premium products were not found in
ParknShop-owned supermarkets ever since. More field trips will
be conducted in hopes of uncovering the fate of Baker’s Choice
D. wangi. Topvalu’s D. wangi was found preying on egg tofu.

There are 3 variations of D. wangi, Baker’s Choice’s being
beige with black markings, Topvalu’s being red with no
markings and blue with no markings used by unknown brand.
                                                                      D. wangi preying on
                                                                       Topvalu’s egg tofu

Currently, Topvalu D. wangi can be found in several AEON stores, including
MegaBox, Kornhill Plaza, and Tsuen Wan stores. Baker’s Choice D. wangi can be
found in ParknShop-owned supermarkets if Baker’s Choice have not completely
phase them out.
                                                                                            5

Archignathidae: Infirmimaxilla kurisu
Having the same dimension as Unidentia wrightae and
several other species, the oral groove of Infirmimaxilla
kurisu is strikingly big, its jaws can be bent easily as the
result. Different from most Orthogonidectes occlupanids, the
paraoral adit (the indented space that opens into the oral
groove) of I. kurisu resembles the shape of a champagne
coupe instead of a triangle, and the oral hooks of I. kurisu are
rounder. I. kurisu was first found preying on Japanese grapes
made in Nagano Prefecture on 25 May 2021 in SOGO at
Causeway Bay, and was later found in several stores of Yau
Ma Tei Fruit Market on 26 May 2021 and in stores of Ming
Fruit Shop Natural on 31 May 2021.

Currently, only one variation of I. kurisu has been found,
being white with no markings, and a tag bearing attached to
it. 2 variations of tag bearings are spotted attached to I. kurisu. I. kurisu preying on

Archignathidae: Megapanis sonorus
Megapanis sonorus made its way to Hong Kong through
imported alfalfa hay from USA. M. sonorus was first found
preying on Alffy alfalfa hay of the brand American Pet
Diner in the store of Moon Rabbit Hotel on 7 July 2021.
Currently, only one variation of M. sonorus has been
found, being white with blue markings.

The specimen collected in Hong Kong is
observed to have its oral groove shifted 1mm
when compared with the specimen acquired
by DWORC and sent to HORG.

Archignathidae: Quadratopalpus ilex
Thought to exist only in the Nearctic region,
Quadratopalpus ilex has in fact existed in Hong Kong
for quite a long time, dating back to 2013 (credit to
Eurye) or earlier. Q. ilex can only be found on Garden’s 7 variations of Garden Q. ilex
Hot Dog Buns, Hamburger Buns and English Muffins. The
reason for it being the third most common species is its
lower availability in convenience stores.

The oral groove of Garden Q. ilex might have slight
differences when compared to the image in HORG, such as
it being slightly larger or more towards the side. The Eurye’s Garden Q. ilex(2013-2014)
reason behind these mutations is yet to be discovered.

Q. ilex can be found easily in supermarkets; that is if they are
not sold out. They are usually displayed on racks sparsely, but
there might be a greater quantity of products preyed on by Q.
ilex in AEON. Slightly larger oral groove
                                                                                of Garden’s Q. ilex

It is rarely seen in our daily lives as families usually prefer the Sandwich bread
products, Life bread products, or any bread preyed by P. utiliformis grandis and P.
utiliformis. Therefore, this species should be tracked down manually for collection
purposes.

Garden bread products are usually baked and sent to stores for
selling on the same day, and these products usually have a 4
day life span before expiring. Q. ilex prey, however, usually
have a life span of less than 4 days before expiry in stores as
they are less preferred by consumers and may not be sold out
completely on the day of delivery. Researchers and collectors
are advised to visit multiple stores if they wish to track down
a specific colour variant of Q. ilex.
                                                                      Q. ilex preying on Garden

Corrugatidae: Genevertonicus quimbyi
Genevertonicus quimbyi made its way to Hong Kong through
imported melons from USA. G. quimbyi was first spotted on nets
in one store in Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market on 7 June 2021. Out of the
three specimens found at the store, only one specimen was intact
when acquired, the other two specimens have a palp and an oral
hook missing respectively. It is advised that specimens are to be
detached from nets with caution if similar damages are to be
prevented. Currently, only one variation of G. quimbyi has been
found, being white with no markings.

                                                                      G. quimbyi preying
                                                                     on American melons

                                                                                           9
Fibulictidae: Impleximotus stellaformatus
Not being documented on HORG until May 2021,
Impleximotus stellaformatus has in fact existed in late 2020.
A red specimen was collected from late 2020 but was not
recognized as an occlupanid until 15 February 2021, when a
yellow variant was found. Currently, only two colour variants
of I. stellaformatus exist.

Being one of the species that falls into the order Kirigami, it
shares many similarities with species of Kamptoconidae and
Odontotrochidae, the two other families that belong to the
Kirigami order. Fibulictidae is hypothesized to be more related to
Odontotrochidae than to Kamptoconidae, as the only difference
between I. stellaformatus and species of Odontotrochidae are
their dential processes. Whereas the latter possesses many dential
processes, resembling a gear, I. stellaformatus possesses only
three dential processes, hinting a relation to Tridentidae. I. stellaformatus (top
                                                                          two) and other
                                                                     Kirigamis(bottom four)

Distance between buttons and jaws of I. stellaformatus is also
found to be different between specimens. This is proven a
normal phenomenon after several field trips has been
conducted to compare the distance between other specimens.
This phenomenon is confirmed to occur on specimens of other
species of order Kirigami as well.

The products which it is usually found preying on are Japanese sweet potatoes,
Japanese onions, Korean sweet potatoes and PureSpect (American brand) oranges
imported from USA. Occasionally, yellow I. stellaformatus can be found preying
on Korean chestnuts and Taiwanese purple corn in YATA supermarkets, Japanese
burdock in Market Place by Jasons supermarkets, and Japanese carrots and Korean
potatoes in TASTE supermarkets.

                                                                                         10
It cannot be concluded whether the supermarkets or the brand that exported them
chose to use I. stellaformatus, as it can be found on products that are sometimes
closed by tape/twisted ties but sometimes by I. stellaformatus. Further
investigations must be made to understand the prevalency of I. stellaformatus on
these brands.

It is also suspected that both yellow and red variant I.
stellaformatus have special abilities or curses. The sweet potatoes
preyed on by yellow I. stellaformatus were found having star
shaped cores on their cross-sections on one occasion. Later, an
unusual pattern was found on the cross-section of another sweet
                                                                          Star shape core
potato. It is hypothesized that this phenomenon is caused by the of sweet potato
ability or curse of yellow I. stellaformatus which can warp the
tissues of its host, eventually forming a star within it. Further
investigations will be made on this subject in the future.

                                                                          Unusual pattern
The red variant is suspected to have the ability or curse of
weakening the bags of its hosts. The bags it is found occluding onto are often very
thin, picking a bag up might result in the bag breaking, causing its content to fall
out and startling anyone who wanted to acquire red I. stellaformatus or its host.
However, the reason and logic behind such a parasitic ability or curse has yet to be
understood. Whether it is trying to kill its host from the beginning or to protect its
host and itself by putting themselves to ruin is unknown. On one occasion, a
yellow I. stellaformatus was found preying on thin bags, which indicates either red
variant has the ability or curse to disguise itself as the yellow variant, or the yellow
variant has the same weakening effect on its preys.

I. stellaformatus is surprisingly common. It can be found in ParknShop, TASTE,
fusion, SU-PA-DE-PA, Wellcome, AEON, YATA, APITA UNY, 3hreeSixty, Great,
Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market, and possibly more places. Do note that the yellow
variant is more common than the red variant, and they might appear at the fridge
section.

                                                                                            11
Haplognathidae: Stomatocardia obtusa
Stomatocardia obtusa made its way to Hong Kong through
imported baby choy sum and choy sum from Australia. S.
obtusa was first spotted in Great Food Hall on 30 May
2021. Currently, only one variation of S. obtusa has been
found, being white with no markings, and a tag bearing
attached to it. Since S. obtusa is a common species in
Australia, regular field trips will be conducted to Great
Food Hall to investigate whether other Australian species
exist in great food hall in other periods of the year.

                                                              S. obtusa preying on
                                                            Australian baby choy sum

                                                                                       12
Haplognathidae: Unidentia kinkani
Possessing the shape and size of Unidentia
obtusamaxilla ammon/brevis and oral groove of
Unidentia wrightae, a dim yellow variant specimen of
Unidentia kinkani was received by the Dry Water
Occlupanid Research Center as part of a collection sent to
them, DWORC referred to it as Unidentia danielae when
showing the specimen to FORC in September 2020, as it was
undocumented by that time. There is no host information
about the specimen received by DWORC, but the specimens
found in Hong Kong preys on JA 伊万里(Japanese brand)’s
kumquat made in Imari city, Saga prefecture, Japan. The U. kinkani received by DWORC
orange variant was first spotted in two stores in Yau Ma
Tei Fruit Market on 10 March 2021, and later in
Causeway Bay SOGO; the white variant was then spotted
in a different store in Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market on 22
April 2021 and in AEON store at MegaBox on 20 May
2021.

U. kinkani has two colour variations, being orange and
white, both having no markings.

                                                         U. kinkani preying on Japanese Kumquat

                                                                                            13
Kamptoconidae: Nectofocales baldwina
Thought to exist only in Japan, Nectofocales baldwina has
been spotted in Don Don Donki on 26 February 2021, and
later in SOGO, Muji Food Market(Telford Plaza), YATA
and AEON. Green N. baldwina was found preying on
Japanese garlic from Aomori Prefecture and onions from
Kumamoto prefecture and Hokkaido, yellow N. baldwina found in
YATA preyed on Purespect navel oranges from California, USA,
and red N. baldwina found in AEON and APITA UNY preyed on
Japanese onions from Nagasaki Prefecture.

N. baldwina preying on onions from Hokkaido and Kumamoto N. baldwina preying on garlics from Aomori

When the yellow variant was first found in YATA on 6
May 2021, one of the specimens was not found preying
on any hosts, but was lying on the bottom of the box
containing Purespect oranges which other specimens
were preying on. As this specific specimen was not bent,
unlike other Kirigami specimens, it is hypothesized that
this specimen did not prey on anything prior to its
discovery. Yellow N. baldwina was later found preying N. baldwina not preying on any hosts
on PureSpect oranges in YATA, Market Place by
Jasons, AEON, SOGO, on Japanese sweet potatoes in TASTE, and
on Japanese onions in AEON. Green N. baldwina can be found
commonly in Don Don Donki stores, while red N. baldwina can be
found in AEON and APITA UNY stores.

Currently only three colours of N. baldwina has been found in
Hong Kong, being green, yellow, and red, all possessing black N. baldwina preying on
                                                                                 onions from Nagasaki

Odontotrochidae: Ampleximordax ptyctophyllus
Thought to exist only in Japan, Ampleximordax
ptyctophyllus was first spotted in YATA on 13 February
2021. Later, gold, red, yellow and green A.
ptyctophyllus had been found in AEON on 19 February
2021, MUJI(Telford Plaza) on 18 March 2021, YATA on
1 April 2021, and iEAT on 21 April 2021 respectively.

Gold A. ptyctophyllus was found preying on Japanese
sweet potatoes of 全農 (Japanese brand) from Kagoshima
prefecture. On all occasions, sweet potatoes that gold A.
ptyctophyllus preys on were found to all possessing beige peels,
contrary to most sweet potatoes in HK which are reddish purple.
However, it is unknown whether this applies for all gold A.
ptyctophyllus preys. Red A. ptyctophyllus had been found preying on
Japanese onions made in Hokkaido, Taiwanese sweet potatoes and
Japanese burdocks made in Aomori. Yellow A. ptyctophyllus had been

AEON supermarkets have the highest chance of spotting gold A. ptyctophyllus,
especially the AEON store at Kornhill Plaza, though it may also exist in some
YATA supermarkets. Currently, MUJI at Telford Plaza and YATA are the only
places where red A. ptyctophyllus has been found in. Yellow A. ptyctophyllus had
been spotted only in YATA at North Point. Green A. ptyctophyllus had been found
in iEAT stores and MUJI at Telford Plaza.

Toxodentidae: Palpatophora
glyphodorsalis
Currently there is insufficient information about this
species in Hong Kong, other than the fact that it existed
at some point. An image of Hong Kong occlupanids was
sent to a FORC member before December 2020, showing
a Garden’s orange-red P. utiliformis and a white
Palpatophora glyphodorsalis with blue markings not Image of P. utiliformis and
describing expiry date. According to the FORC member P. glyphodorsalis received
                                                                 by FORC member
who received the image, no host information was provided.
More researches will be done to solve the mystery of Hong
Kong P. glyphodorsalis.

                                                                                          16
Toxodentidae: Palpatophora magnastoma
Thought to be Nearctic region exclusive, Palpatophora
magnastoma have existed in Hong Kong since 2014 or earlier
(credit to Eurye). P. magnastoma had been spotted in AEON,
SOGO, ParknShop, TASTE, fusion, food le parc, International,
SU-PA-DE-PA, and FRESH. More field trips will be conducted
to figure out if it exists in other supermarkets in Hong Kong.
On all occasions, P. magnastoma was found preying on two
brands of udon noodles made in Korea. According to Eurye,
the P. magnastoma that was found in Australia on 4 March
2021 was also preying on udon noodles made in Korea, albeit a
different brand. It is hypothesized that P. magnastoma might be
related to Korean products or udon to some degree.

                                                             P. magnastoma preying on udon
So far only 1 variation of P. magnastoma has been found,
being white with no markings.

P. magnastoma can be spotted on aisles and the fridge section of supermarkets.

                                                                                       17
Toxodentidae: Palpatophora utiliformis
Despite being documented as “most common of all
occlupanids” on the HORG website, this is not the case in
Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Palpatophora utiliformis is only
the second most common species. P. utiliformis are usually
found on Garden bread brand products, specifically the
products of Sandwich products and the Life Bread products.
P. utiliformis is also spotted on Bagels Forever’s frozen
bagels and Food For Life frozen bread, both imported from
USA. In April 2021, P. utiliformis has been spotted on
Baker’s Choice’s Super Soft Sandwich Bread in three
colour morphs, being beige, red and yellow, blue P.
utiliformis is later found on Baker’s Choice Super Soft
Sandwich Bread in May 2021. The correlation between use
of P. utiliformis and P. utiliformis grandis on different

Baker’s Choice products is currently undetermined. On 26
May 2021, dim yellow P. utiliformis was found preying on
Japanese mushrooms made in Shimane prefecture, these P.
utiliformis specimens sport no markings and have tag
bearings attached to them.

P. utiliformis can be easily mistaken as P. utiliformis
                                                                 P. utiliformis preying on
grandis, as they are hard to distinguish when occluding onto mushrooms from Shimane
bags.

P. utiliformis can be found in most supermarkets and convenience stores, and P.
utiliformis might appear at the fridge section on imported bread products.

                                                                                             18
Toxodentidae: Palpatophora utiliformis grandis
Palpatophora utiliformis grandis is undoubtedly the most common
species in Hong Kong. Being used by two of the biggest bread
brands and bakeries in Hong Kong, Maxim’s cakes and Garden,
and various other brands, it is usually the first species people come
to mind when they are asked what a bread clip (a more common
way of expressing Occlupanid) is. Usually, their host is
bread, but they are also found preying on a variety of
products, such as udon, Japanese kumquat, Australian
cauliflower and Australian potatoes. P. utiliformis
grandis also preys on Food For Life’s frozen bread
imported from USA.

Almost all P. utiliformis grandis have markings stating
the expiry date of their host, except those preying on
udon, Japanese Kumquat, Australian cauliflower and
Australian potatoes, which have no markings at all.

P. utiliformis grandis can be easily found in
supermarkets, convenience stores, and stores of chain
bakeries. While red no marking variant can be found in
Japan Home Center, Best Mart 360 and AEON, the
parallel dim yellow no marking variant can be found in
Don Don Donki and Market Place by Jasons, and the
15 variations of P. utiliformis grandis
white no marking variant can be found in Market Place,
3hreeSixty, and U Select.

                                                                                                19
Toxodentidae: Porrectofrontus mechadeus
Thought to exist only in the Nearctic region, Porrectofrontus
mechadeus made its way to Hong Kong through imported paper
plates made by Dixie Ultra(American company). P. mechadeus
had been spotted on 13 March 2021 in Gateway and A&M, both
being grocery stores that import products from USA. More field
trips will be conducted to discover whether other supermarkets
import Dixie Ultra products.

In both stores, P. mechadeus was found preying on bags that
contain great quantity of paper plates. The thickness of P.
mechadeus found is twice as thick as other species that can be
found in Hong Kong, it is hypothesized that it has to do with P.
mechadeus’s role to close heavy weighted bags that contain
several hundreds of paper plates.

Currently there are two variation of P. mechadeus, both being
                                                                   P. mechadeus preying on
brown, one variant has engraved markings and another does Dixie Ultra paper plates
not.

                                                                                           20
Toxodentidae: Terenoquetra aurantium
Having two sharp dential processes unlike normal
toxodentids, this type of occlupanid is being referred to as
prototoxodentids by some in Foundation for Occlupanology
Research and Communication. T. aurantium has rounded
corners unlike most occlupanids, and it has a similar oral groove size to P.
utiliformis grandis. They were found preying on oranges in all encounters. The
white variant was found preying on Cyril Myron oranges imported from Australia,
and have the brand icon printed on one side. The translucent orange variant was
found preying on Sunkist navel oranges imported from USA, and it comes with a
plastic film on one of the sides. T. aurantium is currently found only in Hong Kong.

Cyril Myron’s white T. aurantium Sunkist’s translucent orange T. aurantium proof of translucency

Translucency had been found on other occlupanids by other occlupanologists in the
past in other countries, but no recorded occlupanids are believed to have plastic
films on them. More research and field trips are to be conducted not just in Hong
Kong, but globally, to figure out if other occlupanids also possess such a unique
trait. However, research into this species might be difficult as the white variant was
never seen after the Chinese New Year holidays in February 2021, which means
current researches on this species can only rely on the translucent orange variant. It
is hypothesized that the appearance of the white variant is related to Australia’s
orange season, which was ending in February, but sufficient evidence is yet to be
found. Local field trips will be conducted again when Australia’s orange season
begins.

YATA is the only supermarket that T. aurantium has been spotted in, but it is not
guaranteed that T. aurantium can be found in every YATA store. Furthermore, the
white variant might be endangered or even extinct after 19 February 2021.

                                                                                                       21
Tridentidae: Admordorsum aotearoa
Admordorsum aotearoa made its way to Hong Kong through
imported corn thins from Australia. A. aotearoa is spotted
preying on corn thins of the Australian brands, Real Foods
and Woolworths. More field trips will be conducted to search
for Real Foods, Woolworths and other Australian snacks in
hopes of finding more hosts of A. aotearoa or even other
species of tridentidae.

So far only 1 variation of A. aotearoa has been found, being white with black
markings.

A. aotearoa can be found in TASTE, food le parc, Gourmet, Primo Mart,
3hreeSixty, Great, and possibly more places.

Tridentidae: Admordorsum groningensis
Currently only found being used by
V28 Bakery, 鳳香園, and arome,
Admordorsum groningensis’
existence could be dated back to
2018(credits to 13ills) or earlier. Back in
October 2018, a cornflower blue A.
groningensis with no markings was collected by
13ills, orange A. groningensis specimens with
black markings were later collected by 13ills in
November and December 2018. In March 2021,
all V28 stores were found using A. groningensis
with no markings. Through the reviews of
Google Maps and 13ills’ collection, it is 13ills’ orange A. groningensis with black markings
confirmed that A. groningensis with black
markings could be found in V28 Bakery
between 2017 and 2018.

On 1 April 2021 and 21 April 2021, 鳳香園
                                                           Google Maps review showing V28’s
products was found using white A. groningensis with A. groningensis with black markings
no markings in FRESH stores and iEAT stores
respectively. However, 鳳香園 products had not been found in
FRESH since 20 May 2021, and the products were not found in
iEAT stores during field trips conducted after 23 June 2021. On
27 April 2021, arome was also found using white A.
groningensis with no markings on a new arome product, the
caramel milk wave loaf. This is the first time arome(owned by
Maxim) is found using occlupanids other than dim yellow P. A. groningensis preying
utiliformis grandis with black markings. However, caramel on V28 bakery products
milk wave loaf was found closed with P. utiliformis grandis on
7 July 2021 in arome, and resumed using A. groningensis on this product. The
reason of arome using P. utiliformis grandis to replace A. groningensis for at least
one month is currently unknown.

                                                                                                       23
On 31 July 2021, white A. groningensis with no markings was spotted in the pick
up area of fast food restaurant Café de Coral

Unlike other brands, there is no pattern in the use of differently coloured specimens
between products or expiry dates when it comes to V28 A. groningensis. It is
possible to find three colours of A. groningensis in a single V28 store.
Occlupanologists, researchers and collectors are suggested to visit the V28 store at
Tak Tin Plaza in Lam Tin, as it is currently the only place to find three colours of
A. groningensis specimens, while only one or two colour variants were discovered
to be prevalent within other V28 stores. The difference in colour diversity between
V28 stores is yet to be explained. As of April 2021, yellow is the most common
colour among the three, cornflower blue being the second, orange being the rarest.
White A. groningensis can be found in 鳳香園 stores or supermarkets selling 鳳香
園 products, such as FRESH and iEAT.

                                                                                   24
Flexivexilla: Fallacibusvexillum uvaderivantur
(undocumented)
Although Pseudo-Occlupanids are not deemed as significant as
ordinary occlupanids in terms of occlupanology, this species is
included in this document due to its oral groove resembling that of
Angulognathidae and specimens confirmed to be plastic-based. This
species is temporarily named Fallacibusvexillum uvaderivantur, which
means “misleading flag of grape stem”. This species was first found in
stores of Ming Fruit Shop Natural on 31 May 2021, and was later
spotted in several stores in Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market. While most
specimens were found attached on stems of Australian grapes, some
specimens were believed to have fallen off from the stems due to its
loose raptoral stricture when compared to other ordinary Occlupanids.
Currently, two variations of markings have been found on F.
uvaderivantur. It was later found that F. uvaderivantur had been
spotted in Australia in March 2021 by Australian occlupanologist
Eurye, two months before the discovery of this species in Hong Kong.
The specimens collected by Eurye possess a variety of markings, one
variation of which is identical to the green one found in Hong Kong.

                                                                         25
