O’G Knight Letter February 2022 Dear O’Gorman Parents & Guardians: February is a busy month full of extra-curricular activities along with registration and planning for next year. Please read below for details on a wide range of upcoming events. Thank you for partnering with us in the education of your child. Catholic Schools Week Mass We are excited to once again gather for our All-City Catholic Schools Week Mass. The Mass will be held at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana University on Friday, February 4 at 10:00 AM. No classes will be held that day, and students are to report directly to the Elmen Center no later than 9:40 AM. Students are released directly from the Elmen Center at the conclusion of the Mass. Parent-Teacher Conferences Our spring parent-teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 16 from 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM. A schedule for the day is included in this newsletter. OGHS Registration Process for 2022-23 We began registering for courses for the 2022-23 school year January 24. The steps to register your student are outlined below. Step 1: Students will need to access the online course registration portal on Infinite Campus. This portal opened Mon- day, January 24 and will close at 8:00 AM on Friday, Feb. 4. Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors will have access to the portal. This procedure is only aimed at course selections for students. Step 2: Families will need to complete the online enrollment form including completing the tuition contract, updating or completing necessary household information, and/or making a request for financial aid/work-study. Step 2 must be com- pleted in order for us to process the course requests from Step 1. Online registration for existing families will open Mon- day, February 14. Online registration will open for new families on Tuesday, February 22. Financial Aid for 2022-23 The deadline for applying for financial aid for the 2022-23 school year is April 1. Please see additional information in this newsletter regarding tuition assistance scholarships available for OGHS students. Winter Formal Our Winter Formal is scheduled for Sunday, February 20 from 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM at The District. This dance is open to all students in grades 9-12. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in the administration office. Guest passes are also avail- able in the administration office. Guest passes must be requested no later than Friday, February 11. Spring Retreat A retreat for juniors and seniors will be held at Inspirational Hills Retreat Center on February 26 & 27. Click on the link to find 6-12 Application and the High School Application. The dead- line to apply for these scholarships is March 11, 2022. Additional Scholarship Opportunities Thanks to many generous donors, Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools are able to offer a variety of scholarships. Scholarships offered by the Bishop O'Gorman Foundation are available for families with PK-12th grade students at Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools. The description of the scholarships that are available for students can be found here. The applications will be online as of February 14, 2022. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is April 1, 2022. Flyer.
Notable Knights! Isabella Savage made the National Honors Performance Series in October 2021 and will be singing at the famed Carne- gie Hall this Sunday! Congratulations to Knute Johnson, Sam Pardy, Keegan Wendande, McCabe Wenande, Alida Skinner, and Kaitlyn Lew- ison who were selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. Only 40 students from across the state were selected. Elena Burgwald has been named a Mary Chilton's Good Citizen by the Daughters of the American Revolution. She will be recognized at the annual President's Tea this month. Record Breaking! Congratulations to Maeve Boetel for breaking the Gymnastics All Around record with a 39! This was a 21 year record (38.8) set by Andrea Wilson during the 2000-2001 sea- son. Congratulations to Audrey Meyer for tying the school gymnastics floor record with a 9.9 originally set in the 2000-2001 season. Congratulations to the OG JV gymnastics team for setting the JV Team record with a 130.6 by also setting the beam and bar records and Katy Pellicotte for setting the JV Beam record with a 9.2. Winter Formal 2022—A Knight Under the Stars! Winter Formal is Sunday, February 20th from 7:30 - 10:30pm at the District! Tickets are now on sale for $15 each. Tickets can be purchased in the main office. All . guests who do not attend OGHS will need to complete a Winter Formal Guest Registra- tion Form found in the office. We had a great turnout Mr. Cleary, Jorja Muller and of over 100 students! We started with some games and class challenges. Isabelle Cox explain games at The Well Mr. Stai gave a talk about God making all things new and the freedom we can find in the Holy Spirit. Afterward students stuck around for hot chocolate, snacks and lots of fun and games. We had sign ups for the spring retreat, and many students stuck around and talked and played games for awhile! Stay tuned for a date and location for The Well in March. February 26-27: Jr/Sr Retreat—Inspiration Hills Inspiration Hills Retreat Center We are very excited to announce that our Spring location for the Spring Retreat Junior/Senior Retreat will be held on Saturday, February 26th and Sunday, February 27th. It will be an overnight retreat for Juniors and Seniors, located at Inspiration Hills Retreat Cen- ter. This retreat will feature fun and exciting games, competi- tions, talks, prayer, praise and worship and a lot more! We will bus to and from O’Gorman to Inspiration Hills. Students will return to O’Gorman around 4pm on Sunday, the 27th. Please help us by praying for the success and fruitfulness of this retreat! Counseling Department News REGISTRATION FOR 2022-2023 opened on January 24 and closes at 8 AM on February 4. Freshmen received all their registration information in Ethics. The counselors visited sophomore and junior English classes in late-January. AP courses, Christian Service, and ATS required an application that was due on January 31. Students are responsible for registering online before the deadline. If students have trouble accessing their Infinite Campus account, they should email Mrs. Hefner at khefner@ogknights.org. SUMMER SCHOOL AND DRIVER’S EDUCATION REGISTRATION is now open. The deadline for registration is March 1 . All courses have a maximum capacity and are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration may close early st if the course is filled. Classes offering, attendance policy, cost and registration form can be found online. TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS: O’Gorman has gone digital! All transcripts are requested and processed through Parch- ment, a secure digital credential sending service. Seniors have received an invite to create an account on their school email. The link to Parchment can also be found online. The cost is $2 per transcript for current students, with payment ac- cepted online. You can track the progress of the transcripts to ensure they are delivered on time! Requests take 1-2 business days to process. AP TESTING: If your student is in AP Government or AP Human Geography you will find an invoice for the AP exam in your My School Bucks account. The payment for these exams is due March 1, 2022. SENIORS: We are here to support you through your post-secondary planning! Let us know how we can help you. SCHOLARSHIPS: The Counseling Office continues to receive scholarship information. Seniors and parents are en- couraged to check the counseling webpage every few weeks as new scholarships are posted as they arrive. Please refer to the college or university’s website for scholarships specific to their school. Other resources for local schol- arship opportunities can be found at www.sfacf.org. COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID: We encourage all senior families to consider filling out the FAFSA online. Another great resource is SouthDakotaMappingYourFuture.org for financial aid information. COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES SCHEDULED: All admissions representatives have been invited back for in-person visits at OGHS. Juniors and seniors are not required to register for these visits in advance, simply meet at the advertised time for a small-group meeting with the college rep. Details of the meetings will be announced in the daily bulletin. SENIOR ATHLETES who plan to participate in college athletics must register with the NCAA (www.eligibilitycenter.org) or NAIA (www.playnaia.org) to confirm academic eligibility for college programs. See Mrs. Robey for more information. CAREER/COLLEGE INFORMATION: www.SDMyLife.com is an online college and career information system available to all students. Students who need their login information should come to the Counseling Office. There is also an ACT Prep program called Method Test Prep, check it out.
Counseling Department News SAT: View testing dates and register online at www.collegeboard.com/sat. COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES SCHEDULED: All college visits will be held virtually outside of school hours. Students will need to pre-register for the zoom meetings. Links for registration are found on the daily bulletin. These visits give students an idea of admission requirements, costs, programs available, and timelines to follow. All college visits are listed in the daily student bulletin. PEER RELATIONS REPORTING: Mrs. Robey, Mr. Lehn or Mrs. Jones are available by appointment or walk in to talk about any concerns personal or academic. If you would like to make an anonymous report click the link. STUDENT EMOTIONAL SUPPORT: Student support is very important, especially now more than ever. We want to make sure that students always have someone to reach out to even outside of school hours. Through the Helpline Center’s Text4HOPE texting program, students can connect with a trained professional and share concerns privately with a trusted individual. All courses have a maximum ca- pacity and are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration may close early if the course is filled. Courses may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Students may register for only one academic summer school class. Registration Deadline: March 1, 2022. All courses have a maximum capacity and may fill before the final registration dead- line. Parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Registration is timestamped when turned into OGHS Admin to determine who is registered for the course as space allows. Tuition: $260 for online classes. $275 for Wellness for Life (includes the cost of three visits to Suburban Lanes bowling alley). Fees for forms received by the deadline will be billed through TADS in April with payment due by May 15. Student tuition accounts must be current prior to attendance in summer programs. Cancellation Policy: There is a $50 cancellation fee for withdrawals made in writing or via email on or before April 30. $75 will be refunded if notification is made in writing or via email after April 30, but on or before May 10. No refunds will be given after May 10. Full refunds are available if classes are cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Classroom Settings: Two methods of instruction are available for summer school: traditional (in-classroom) and online (with in-person testing). Traditional classes run May 31-June 24 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM • Content presented during each 4-week session is equivalent to instruction presented during one semester. • Students can be absent no more than 2 days of the summer school session. Students who are absent more than 2 days will be dropped from the class and will not receive a refund. • Orientation for all students taking a traditional class will be held on May 31 in the PAC at 8:00 AM. Online classes run from May 23-June 24. • Content presented during each 5-week session is equivalent to instruction presented during one semester. • Students must be on campus to take all assessments. Dates and times for taking the assessments are printed on the back of this form. • Students will be required to meet daily progress benchmarks. DRIVER’S ED 2022 For office use only Date/Time Rec’d: Initials: Current grade First name Last name O’Gorman offers state-certified Driver's Education. A state approved Driver's Education program meets the following minimum requirements: Thirty (30) hours of in-classroom instruction, and a total of twelve (12) hours of in-vehicle training-this includes six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel driving as well as six (6) hours of observation, which involves sitting in the backseat of the car, observing the other student driver in the vehicle. Successful com- pletion of Driver's Education includes both the in-classroom instruction and the in-vehicle training. A certified teacher with a Driver's Education en- dorsement provides the instruction. Upon successful completion of the in-classroom and in-vehicle phases at an 80% rate of accuracy, the South Dakota state written and driving tests will be waived. Both the classroom and in-vehicle portion of Driver’s Education are graded using a pass/fail method of evaluation. Passing both parts of the course earns the student 0.5 elective credit. Students are encouraged to have their instruction permit prior to taking the in-vehicle training portion of Driver's Education, but one is not required. Students must be 14 years old before the in-vehicle training portion. Students enrolled in Wellness for Life summer school course may not drive May 31-June 24 as the schedules conflict. How to Register: Students should return this completed registration form to the OGHS counseling office. Priority registration is given to O’Gorman students and upperclassmen. Students are not excused for vacations, camps or extracurricular activities and are required to complete all classroom and in-vehicle training hours to pass. It is advised that students know their summer schedule before registering to be prepared for this commitment. Registration Deadline: March 1, 2022 Tuition: $350. Fees for forms received by the deadline will be billed through TADS in April with payment due by May 15. Student tuition accounts must be current prior to attendance in summer programs. Students who are absent more than three (3) classroom hours will be dropped from the class and will not receive a refund. Students may not miss any of the twelve (12) hours of in-vehicle training. In-classroom Instruction: Monday, May 23 through Friday, May 27 from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. In-vehicle Training will take place during the eight weeks following the in-classroom instruction (May 31-July 21). Students will sign up to drive Mon- day through Thursday within one week. Please note, the week of May 31-June 3 and July 4-8 will be Tuesday through Friday due to the Memorial Day and 4th of July holidays. Daily driving will occur during assigned three-hour rotating blocks between 7 AM and 4 PM. All 12 hours of in-vehicle training is required to pass the course. Students enrolled in Wellness for Life summer school course may not drive May 31-June 24 as the schedules conflict. On March 15, parents of registered students will receive a link via email to sign up for the week their student is available to drive. Please note, no changes will be made to the driving schedule after selections have been made. A reminder letter will be sent out approximately two weeks prior to the start of classroom instruction. It will include details including where to report for the first day of classroom instruction.
