PRESIDENTS WELCOME Welcome to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club’s Junior Activities (Nippers) programme for 2018-2019 On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, I would like to welcome our returning and new junior members together with your families to the 2018 – 2019 Nipper season. Our Club has always held the junior programme in the highest regard and is proud of our results in educating our junior members in surf safety and awareness together with fostering future patrolling Life Savers and Surf Life Saving competitors. We are most fortunate this year to have yet again a highly motivated Junior Activities Committee led by Steve Tindal who not only enjoys the full support of his committee, but the Club’s Management Committee and membership base. I would encourage you all to make yourself known, to Steve Tindal and the JAC committee, Sascha Poxleitner, Lyndon Forlonge, Fabio Westphal, Shaun Baker, Peter Walsh, Kathleen Sammon and Oliver Steele, so as you might engage yourself in the programme. In that regard, there are a variety of roles in which we can all help and you will find the junior activities group a most welcoming and fun lot at the morning set up, BBQ’s, Water Safety and wash down sessions. So can I again welcome you all, and encourage you all to engage with Age Managers, Water Safety Supervisor, Coaches, Team Managers and BBQ Co-ordinator, so that our Nippers and youth can have a rewarding, fun, productive and safe Nipper Season. Yours in Life Saving Ross Fisher President 4
JAC DIRECTOR’S WELCOME On behalf of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC), I would like to welcome all returning and new families to the 2018/2019 Nippers season. The newly elected committee have been hard at work and we are very excited about the season ahead. With a great team of Age Managers, Assistants and coaches, we will be working to ensure all members have the best opportunities available to them. The Nippers program is designed to introduce children aged 5 to 14 to Surf Lifesaving. It is a fun outdoors activity that grows a child’s confidence, and teaches valuable surf awareness skills. Our aim is to provide a safe, family-friendly and fun environment for our Nippers. I believe that all kids living on the coast should be equipped with the best skills and knowledge for safe use of our Australian beaches. Our Nippers today are the next generation of Surf Lifesavers. Nippers Sunday’s are a great way for all family members to get involved in Surf Lifesaving. Each Sunday is a huge logistical undertaking and it is imperative for the smooth running and safety of our children that ALL families contribute in some way. There are many ways you can contribute from the set up and pack up of equipment and BBQ assistance, to enrolling in a program to become an Official, Age Manager or Water Safety Officer. If you would like more information on any of these opportunities, please email nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au. The Club will happily provide you with support and assistance in completing these courses as well as the flexibility to work around your available hours. I would like to formally acknowledge the Board of Directors for their support. There are many men and women who volunteer their time and work tirelessly in the background to make sure the Nippers program continues well into the future. Please take the time to read this booklet thoroughly as it is a wonderful source of information for the 2018/2019 season. I would also like to thank all of you for your support of me as Director. I feel very privileged to hold the position and look forward to the season ahead. Steve Tindal JAC Director 5

GETTING STARTED AT NOOSA NIPPERS MEMBERSHIP It is a requirement of membership of the Noosa Heads Junior Activities program that at least one parent must be members of the club (either as an Associate or an Active Patrolling Member); this ensures the safety for all our Nippers. To start at Noosa Nippers the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the children need to be members of the club. This is completed by either renewing your membership via the SLSA Members Portal (members.sls.com.au) or creating a new membership profile via SLSA Join (join.sls.com.au) and paying membership fees. Every child, whether new or renewing, needs to complete a Pool Evaluation. Children in the U8 - U14 age groups also complete a Beach Proficiency. You MUST be current financial members of the club to attend proficiency sessions. PROFICIENCY Every Nipper must complete a Pool Evaluation and a Beach Evaluation. Nippers who wish to compete must also complete a Competition Evaluation. POOL EVALUATION The Club runs Pool Evaluation days which are available to all current (financial) members Sunday 26th August & 8th September 2018. Nippers are not able to participate in water activities on Nipper Sundays until the Pool Evaluation has been passed. Parents will be advised to enroll their child in intensive swim lessons and then get re-assessed when ready. The JAC recommends all Noosa Nippers attend external swim lessons/squad in order to obtain the required swimming ability needed for ocean safety. The JAC provide a swim subsidy for eligible families. BEACH EVALUATION Children in the U8 – U14 age groups must also complete a run-swim-run or Beach Evaluation. The run-swim-run Beach Evaluation is held on the first two Nipper Sundays. Mid-week training is only available to those Nippers who have successfully completed their Beach Evaluation. 9
If your child does not complete the Beach Evaluation they are not permitted to compete in the Club Championships or receive their relevant Age Award. In addition, dependent upon water safety numbers, they may not be allowed to participate in any water-based activities during Nipper Sundays. COMPETITION EVALUATION If your child is in the U8 – U14 age groups and wishes to compete in inter-club competitions, they must complete the Competition Evaluation for their age group. Competition Evaluations are held on the first two Nipper Sundays. If your child is unable to complete the Competition Evaluation they will not be permitted to compete in inter-club competitions, however this will not affect their participation in Nipper Sunday activities or mid-week training sessions. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT In order for Noosa Nippers to exist, the support of parent volunteers in various roles through the season is crucial. Regardless of whether you are a strong swimmer or not, there will always be somewhere you can lend a helping hand. Roles such as Age Managers and Assistants, Water Safety Officers, Carnival Officials and Beach Set Up/Pack Down are all vital for the program to run at its full potential. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the coordination of and participation in the Sunday Nipper BBQ and other fundraising events (These events are also a great way to meet and socialize with other nipper parents). When your Nipper(s) competes at carnivals it is a requirement that a parent assists with a role relevant to the event. AGE MANAGERS/ASSISTANTS Age Group Managers and Assistants have one of the most important jobs in Surf Life Saving. Age Managers are responsible for the caring and nurturing of our future surf lifesavers. To be an Age Manager you must hold a Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate or Observers Certificate. You must also complete the Junior Activities Age Managers Course. This course has an online component plus a third party on-beach evaluation component. Please register your interest for attending any of the above courses with either JAC Administration – nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au – or Lifesaving Administration – lifesaving@noosasurfclub.com.au 13
WATER SAFETY OFFICERS Water Safety Officers spend most of their time in the water on Nipper Sundays and Carnivals, either on rescue boards, swimming with tubes/fins or being markers and monitors for the wade and swimming races. You must complete a water safety course (such as a Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) or Bronze Medallion) in order to become a Water Safety officer. Please register your interest for attending either of the above courses with either JAC Administration – nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au – or Lifesaving Administration – lifesaving@noosasurfclub.com.au OFFICIALS An Official’s role is either judging, marshaling (or organising) competitors, presenting medals, recording results or starting races. An Officials Level 1 course needs to be completed prior to acting as an official. The fee charged to complete this course will be covered the JAC. Please register your interest for attending the above course with either JAC Administration – nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au – or Lifesaving Administration – lifesaving@noosasurfclub.com.au BEACH SET UP / BBQ CREW Each Sunday morning and for all carnivals we need a great crew to be responsible for the set up and pack down of equipment including tents and flags on the beach and the weekly BBQ. Each week a different age group is rostered to be responsible for BBQ duties and each age group will usually be rostered 2 or 3 times throughout the season. BLUE CARDS It is a requirement of both the Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) that any member who wishes to volunteer/hold a position within the Club (including parent Associate Members who are Water Safety Officers) over the age of 18 hold a Blue Card. As such, all parent volunteers are required to complete an application, or if you already hold a valid Blue Card, complete a confirmation application which will be submitted to SLSQ for processing. 14
See Junior Activities Manual 2018/2019 Season “Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy” for more information. Please note that as a Volunteer there are NO costs associated with applying for a Blue Card. The Blue Card Working with Children Check is confirmed by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. This process is confidential and assists the Club in our duty of care for providing a safe environment for your children. Application forms are available via download from the NHSLSC website www.noosasurfclub.com.au (lifesaving library or how to join Nippers page). Alternatively, forms can be collected from Club Administration during office opening hours. To complete your Blue Card Application, you must present a completed form in person at the Club Office along with two forms of original identification for processing. BREEZEWAY BATHROOMS ACCESS To ensure the safety of our Club’s junior members (Nippers) and ensure the Club’s compliance with Surf Life Saving Australia (‘SLSAs’) ‘Member Protection Policy’, SLSQ’s ‘Child Youth Risk Management Strategy’, Surf Life Saving Queensland (‘SLSQ’s’) ‘Blue Card Screening Policy’ & to mandate and ensure that all members over the age of 18 years with access to the Club’s Active, Surf Sports and JAC Noosa and Peregian Clubhouse areas and amenities hold a current ‘Blue Card’. NO NIPPER WILL BE ALLOWED ACCESS INTO THE CLUB’S BREEZEWAY BATHROOMS not even when accompanied by their parent unless you hold an SRC award. Then the only bathrooms accessible to our Nippers are the ones at the east end of the building through the Nipper equipment shed. This policy provides the specification that supports our commitment to eliminating discrimination, harassment, child abuse and other forms of inappropriate behaviour and any perception of same, in line with SLSA’s ‘Member Protection Policy’, SLSQ’s ‘Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy’, and SLSQ’s ‘Blue Card Screening Policy’. 15
NIPPER SUNDAYS NIPPERS SESSIONS Each Sunday begins with a short meeting on the beach at 7.45am in front of the club house (this may vary depending on conditions). All children and their parents/guardians are required to attend these briefings to find out what is happening for the particular session and to hear about what is happening in the Club as a whole. SIGN IN On arrival at the club parents MUST complete the sign on sheet to register their children for the session. Nippers must be signed in EVERY Nipper Sunday. If you do not sign on and sign off your Nipper’s attendance will not be counted for that session (see Club Championships). It is imperative for accurate water safety numbers that Nippers are signed on. Parents who are not required to assist as Water Safety, BBQ or other assistance MUST remain at the beach for safety reasons (in accordance with SLSA Policy). Any child who arrives to sign on without a Parent/Guardian present will not be able to participate in the morning’s activities. No child should be left on the beach unsupervised SESSION TIMES The U6 & U7 age groups finish at approximately 9.15am (1 hour session). The U8 - U14 age groups finish at approximately 10:15am (2 hour session). NIPPER CAPS & HI-VIS SINGLETS Nippers must wear their Nipper Cap and pink Hi-Vis Singlet at all times during the session. Nippers must assemble at their Age Flag and meet their Age Manager prior to heading off to activities. Everyone will proceed to their designated area for the commencement of the day’s program once the Age Manager has their group together. 16
ACTIVITY ROTATION Each Sunday, the U8 – U14 participate in three activity areas: Beach, Boards and Swim. The U8 – U10 groups share one area for this rotation and the U11 – U14 groups share another area for this rotation. The rotation schedule is worked out by the Junior Activities Committee in conjunction with the Age Managers and can differ from week to week. CANCELLATION OF NIPPERS There will be times throughout the season where Nipper Sunday sessions will not run or will be cancelled. Cancellations are unfortunate and the Junior Activities Committee do not make these decisions lightly, however due to the size of our Nipper program sessions will not run when the beaches have been closed or rough conditions are forecast. For all other weekends where a Nipper Sunday session will not be run, dates will be advised as early as possible in the season on the Nipper calendar. Please be aware that at all times we must have the correct adult-to-child ratios both on the beach and in the water for sessions to run. Notification will be published as early as possible via Team App, Facebook and the “no reply” SurfGuard system. INJURIES It is the Parent’s obligation to immediately notify SLSA in writing through your Club’s Administration of any change to medical conditions, fitness and ability to participate. Summary of Cover Members over the age of 14 are covered by workcover whilst they are undertaking endorsed Club Activities. This includes patrolling, endorsed training sessions, competition and whilst participating in an endorsed Club activity. Members under 14 years are unable to be covered by Workcover, therefore they are covered by our Public Liability Insurance. The same limitations apply as above. 17
Injured Members Members are obligated to advise the Club if they sustain an injury, regardless of how that injury is sustained ie: either undertaking a Club activity, or a personal activity, or illness. As per your membership application form, you sign a declaration that you are “medically & physically fit for duties and that you will immediately advise your Club in writing of any change to your medical condition, fitness or ability to participate” Injured Members must not attend any Club activity including Nipper days, trainings, excursions or any Club Activity until they provide a Medical clearance from their GP Workcover If you are injured whilst participating in an endorsed Club Activity you must obtain a Workers Compensation Medical Certificate from your GP. If you advise your GP that your injury is a Workcover injury, you should not be billed for the visit. You must immediately advise the Club in writing, details of how, when & where you sustained the injury. The Club will them get in contact with you and guide you through the process of lodging a claim. Please Note: You are unable to participate in any Club Activity until you receive a clearance letter from Workcover, who will also advise your Club. To finalise a workcover claim your GP must first provide a full Medical clearance (including a list of surf activities) to return to duties. Note – there is no such thing as “light duties” in club activities. You must be declared fit to return to full lifesaving duties. Your Club Administrator will guide you through the process and will answer any questions you may have. Emails are to be sent to admin@noosasurfclub.com.au 18
NIPPER COMPETITIONS (CARNIVALS) WHO CAN COMPETE? There are carnivals throughout the season for U8 - U14 age groups. Any Nipper who has completed their competition proficiency can compete, however they must obtain the relevant age award before entry can be processed for Branch or QLD State Championships. Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events in beach, surf and pool water events along with events such as March Past and multi skill events for U14’s in first aid and champion lifesaver. WHERE ARE CARNIVALS HELD Carnivals are held throughout the Sunshine Coast Branch, stretching from Rainbow Beach to Redcliffe. Events such as Fastest Man on Sand and the QLD Youth Championships for U11 - U14’s require travel a little further afield, usually towards the Gold Coast. HOW LONG DO THE CARNIVALS GO FOR U8 - U10 carnivals are usually held over one day whereas the U11 - U14 carnivals can be held over two days (Saturday & Sunday). Most carnivals marshal at approx. 7.45am, with a club warm up held at 7am. Carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day. All parents are expected to arrive early to assist with set up. HOW TO ENTER Carnival nominations will be emailed to eligible Nippers for completion. The costs for entering a carnival are covered by the club, as long as the JAC Team Selection policy is adhered to. To be eligible for entry into ANY carnival the Nipper & parents/guardians must abide by the following conditions: • The required pool swim and run/swim/run proficiency completed prior to the start of Nipper Sundays and all relevant paperwork completed. • The competition proficiency must be successfully completed during 19
the first two sessions of Nipper Sundays and all relevant paperwork completed • Age Award must be completed prior to Branch carnival to be eligible to compete in Branch and State Titles • Nominations MUST be completed prior to the closing date. • Entry fees will be paid by NHSLSC, providing all requirements are adhered to. Please refer to the Team Selection policy for all details • At least 1 parent/guardian MUST assist with duties associated with the carnival (as deemed necessary by the JAC) No Child will be entered into a carnival without parental assistants being advised at time of nomination. LATE WITHDRAWL FEE If you withdraw from the carnival without a medical certificate from a Doctor or pharmacy or written permission from the JAC, you will be invoiced the withdrawal fee that is stated in the official carnival circular from SLSA or SLSQ. WHAT TO BRING? Each club has a tent set up on the beach that we provide for competitors. Everyone will require plenty of water and food to last the day, sunscreen, hat, club swimwear and warm clothes if the weather/wind turns. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Club championships are held over 2 Nipper Sundays for children in the U8-U14 age groups. Round 1 of 2018/2019 Club Championships will be held on Sunday 2 December 2018; Round 2 of 2018/2019 Club Championships will be held on Sunday 24 February 2019. The day is conducted as a normal carnival held at Noosa Main Beach (conditions dependant) and we encourage all Nippers to take part. Each age group (U8 upwards) will be awarded a Male and Female Age Champion as well a Male and Female Age Champion Runner Up. Please note: To be awarded Age Champion and be eligible to compete at Round 2 Club Champs the Nipper must: 1. attend a minimum of 60% Nipper Sundays up to and including the week prior to Round 2. 2. complete their required proficiencies and age award. 3. NO carnivals are required to attend to be eligible this season. 20
MID-WEEK TRAINING Noosa Nippers is not just a Sunday event. Mid-week training and coaching sessions are offered to all Nippers from U8 and above, all included in your membership fee. All nippers attending these sessions must wear a pink high visibility vest available for purchase from the uniform shop and the admin office. No High Viz = No Training Sessions are normally broken down in to Board/Swim and Beach running. These sessions are held before school and after school. There is a Saturday morning session for approved U11 – U14 Nipper competitors and Sunday morning surfing session for all level U8 – U11 Nippers (session runs before Nipper Sunday session). Water safety is required on a 1:5 ratio for all training sessions (1 water safety to every 5 children). To assist with water safety a parent needs to hold either their SRC or Bronze Medallion. If a training session does not have enough water safety personnel, preference of participation will be given to those children whose parents have signed on to assist. For further information on these sessions please speak to the coaches to discuss what option will best suit your child. A training schedule is emailed out at the end of each week for the following week’s program. WHERE DOES NIPPERS TAKE YOU The primary objective of the Junior Activities program is the introduction to the senior club after the age of 14. From here members are asked to perform beach patrols utilising skills learnt during their junior years. A Surf Rescue Certificate can be undertaken at age 13 in preparation for the years of lifesaving ahead. The reward for those who continue on to the senior ranks is considerable. In return for a members’ patrolling service, the Club offers a range of facilities and services such as comprehensive coaching programs, gym access and a large array of life saving skills, awards and competition opportunities. Juniors initially enter into the Under 15 category and will undergo the Bronze Medallion qualification at 15 years of age. 21
NIPPER PROFILES NIPPER CLUB AND VICE CAPTAINS Each year the Club chooses Nipper captains and vice captains from the ranks of the U14’s. We encourage our young members to embrace leadership roles within the club. When selecting Club and Vice Captains it is the club’s intention to further develop our young leaders. The selection process is an application and interview conducted by a panel of members, both senior and junior, selected by the JAC. 2018/2019 Nipper Captains 2018/2019 Nipper Vice Captains Zoe Longhurst James Gelling Grace Giblett Alex Hansen COACHES PROFILES Head Coach - Darren Mercer Darren began Nippers at the Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club in NSW when he was 7 years old.
