Music is everywhere in our lives and we all listen to it in different ways. That’s why the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra created Experience concerts, where we bring you music in different settings and new, innovative ways. Think you know everything about going to the orchestra? Think again. The Shed Series isn’t just a concert series, it’s a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy an evening of music in a relaxed environment. Grab a drink, sit or stand, get up close to the Orchestra or find a spot to sit back and relax. The Shed Series performs a mix of traditional and contemporary works in a setting that works for you. NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen both directs and performs as he leads the Orchestra in the Baroque Series. The NZSO presents music by Telemann, Handel, Corelli and Fux and features Section Principal Flute Bridget Douglas in Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto La Notte. The NZSO will take you to a galaxy far, far away with screenings of the films Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back with live orchestra. The Orchestra has a proud tradition of reaching out to people and communities through our Learning & Connecting programme. In 2019 we again present a variety of concerts and events, from education and performance opportunities to accessibility activities, where we bring the joy of symphonic music to all New Zealanders. Music is for everyone and the NZSO presents a diverse and engaging series of concerts in 2019 for all lovers of music. We can’t wait to see you there. Bridget Douglas Section Principal, Flute 1
Shed Series is a bit different. It doesn’t always put the Orchestra on stage or expect you to sit in one place while you listen. Instead, it’s a relaxed and informal way to enjoy a diverse range of music, whether you’re an NZSO regular or exploring orchestral music for the first time. In the laid-back setting of Wellington’s Shed 6 you can get up close to the NZSO as it performs great classics alongside exciting 20th and 21st century compositions. The Shed Series concerts have a casual, inviting atmosphere. You can sit or stand, catch up with friends in the breaks and enjoy a drink and something to eat while the Orchestra performs. 2019 features classical, jazz, tango, world music, New Zealand compositions and more. You can hear Bach, Mozart and Haydn alongside 20th century composers Ravel, Milhaud, Ellington, Revueltas and Piazzolla or today’s stars, including John Adams, Derek Bermel, Eve de Castro-Robinson, Jack Body, Leonie Holmes, Krzysztof Penderecki and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. 2019 SHED SERIES Hamish McKeich Conductor Body Fanfare for Bert Milhaud La Création du Monde JS Bach Cello Suite No.5 in C minor, BWV 1011, I. Prelude Arvo Pärt Wenn Bach Bienen gezüchtet hätte ... (If Bach had been a Beekeeper) JS Bach Violin Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004, III. Sarabande, IV. Gigue Ellington/Peress Black, Brown and Beige Suite Music constantly evolves and changes, with styles and musical periods reborn in completely new and different ways. Shed Series 2019 begins with a summer concert celebrating the influences classical and jazz music have had on each other. Rebirth Opening with New Zealand composer Jack Body’s hypnotic Fanfare for Bert, African rhythms and world music influences can be heard throughout this jazz-tinged work. The concert also features the Black, Brown and Beige Suite by legendary composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. The work boldly addresses African-American history and premiered in 1943 at Carnegie Hall, a rare feat at the time for an African-American composer. Many musical styles, including jazz, have been influenced by Bach’s music. This concert includes two Bach solo cello and violin works, along with revered Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s salute to Bach, Wenn Bach Bienen gezüchtet hätte (If Bach had been a Beekeeper). With great music, food and wine, is there a better way to enjoy a summer’s evening? Wellington Fri, 8 Feb, 7.30pm Shed 6 9
2019 SHED SERIES Hamish McKeich Conductor Haydn Symphony No. 38 in C major, Hob. I:38 The Echo Leonie Holmes Elegy Revueltas Homenaje a Federico García Lorca (Homage to Lorca) Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin Krzysztof Penderecki Polymorphia Jonny Greenwood 48 Responses to Polymorphia (New Zealand premiere) Concert two in the Shed Series 2019 is an eclectic and inventive selection of music in which the concept of ‘responses’ is explored by different composers. Acclaimed Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s sonic masterpiece for strings Polymorphia is matched with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s compelling 48 Responses to Polymorphia. Penderecki and Greenwood worked together, and this will be the first time the NZSO has performed these works in the same concert. Also featured will be Haydn’s Symphony No. 38 The Echo, Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, Leonie Holmes’ Elegy and a rare performance of Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas’ intoxicating Homenaje a Federico García Lorca (Homage to Lorca). This unique Responses work for orchestra, which premiered just two months after the Spanish poet Lorca was murdered in 1936, is inspired by Mexican folk music. Wellington Fri, 10 May, 7.30pm Shed 6 11
2019 SHED SERIES Hamish McKeich Conductor Piazzolla Sinfonietta Eve de Castro-Robinson Cyprian’s Dance Mozart Symphony No. 32 in G major, K. 318 JS Bach / Webern A Musical Offering: Ricercare Webern Symphony, Op. 21 John Adams Chamber Symphony Sinfonietta Orchestras come in all shapes and sizes. Sinfonietta presents an evening of rhythmic and adventurous music written for smaller chamber orchestras, ideally suited for the intimate space of Shed 6. Live performance is key to bringing music to life, so some 20th-century composers wrote music for chamber orchestras to ensure their new and inventive works were performed. The concert opens with Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla’s Sinfonietta. Piazzolla is considered the greatest tango composer and Sinfonietta captures his exquisite earthiness in all its glory. Eve de Castro-Robinson’s Cyprian’s Dance, an exciting work for strings, was commissioned by the NZ Chamber Orchestra and first performed in 1995. Lauded American composer John Adams’ virtuosic Chamber Symphony was inspired by Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1. The work’s third movement, Roadrunner, alludes to the music of the Roadrunner cartoons, which can be felt in the unbridled energy of the piece. Anton Webern features twice, with his Symphony Op. 21 and the composer’s arrangement for chamber orchestra of the Ricercare from Bach’s A Musical Offering. Wellington Fri, 9 Aug, 7.30pm Shed 6 13
2019 SHED SERIES Hamish McKeich Conductor Russel Walder Oboe Tchaikovsky/Ellington The Nutcracker Suite (Selection) John Luther Adams Become River Milhaud Saudades do Brasil, Op. 67 (Selection) Derek Bermel Canzonas Americanas: Mvts. 1-3 (New Zealand premiere) Russel Walder arr. Psathas Untitled new work (World premiere) The finale of the 2019 Shed Series presents a programme of light, relaxing music to entertain as we head towards the end of the year. Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams’ Become River is a beautiful and meditative piece of music inspired by the natural world and is part of a trilogy of works including Become Ocean and Become Desert. Derek Bermel’s Canzonas Americanas conjures up the North American continent with elements of Native American blues, rock, funk and other inspirations, including American music giant Aaron Copland. French composer Darius Milhaud will take the audience to Brazil with Saudades do Brasil, a mesmerising musical journey through the sights and sounds of Rio de Janeiro. Oboist Russel Walder joins the NZSO to perform three of his own works specially arranged for oboe and orchestra by John Psathas. These pieces are inspired by the concepts of meditation Unwound and self-awakening and audiences can expect a mesmerising, otherworldly live performance. Jeff Tyzik’s arrangement of The Nutcracker Suite, by Duke Ellington and long time collaborator Billy Strayhorn, will have you snapping your fingers to the beat of this much-loved jazz interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Baroque music is classical music at its purest and most transparent, while still including all the elements of human emotion. Performing it is a challenge as you want to stick to the period style as much as possible, while at the same time being creative and musically engaging, showing the emotions behind the themes and motives. As we perform without a conductor, we rely upon and react to one another making the performance experience intense and inclusive. Every musician on stage is actively shaping and voicing the music; this and the fact that the music itself is stunning in its beauty, makes the series an extremely rewarding experience for both performers and audience. The Baroque Series is different from other NZSO concerts in that the music chosen is exclusively from the Baroque period, 1600-1750. Where we perform baroque music is also very important. The venues for 2019 were chosen for their intimate settings, atmosphere and acoustics. Vesa-Matti Leppänen NZSO Concertmaster I loved being a part of the 2018 baroque concert in Wellington Cathedral of St Paul and I’m looking forward to playing Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto La Notte with NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen directing. Vivaldi gives the flute soloist a varied workout with long phrases and trills in the slow movements, then contrasts this in fast movements with explosive and technically challenging sections – lots of cross fingerings that aren’t natural! The churches we perform this music in around New Zealand have such beautiful acoustics – exactly the types of places that Vivaldi intended his music to be played (his music was most often performed at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice in his time). Vivaldi is always so uplifting and exciting to both listen to and perform, and it’s going to be one of my personal musical highlights of 2019. Bridget Douglas NZSO Section Principal, Flute 20
2019 BAROQUE SERIES Vesa-Matti Leppänen Director/Violin Telemann Water Music, TWV 55:C3 Handel Water Music, HWV 348-350 Sense the waves crashing and the current pushing you along in these two great works from the late Baroque period. Telemann’s Water Music is an inventive orchestral suite and highly descriptive work in ten movements. You can feel the ocean’s movement, mythological water deities sleeping, in love, joking, angry and, then, finally, the happy sailors at the Hamburg port. It celebrates the importance of the sea and the port and how both provided prosperity and livelihood for the city. An evening trip up London’s river Thames seems an unlikely place to debut one of Handel’s most well-known pieces, but this is exactly the story behind Handel’s Water Music. King George I requested that Handel write a piece of music to be performed on a barge on the Thames, as he and his aristocratic friends travelled up the river on a summer’s evening in 1717. As the river Thames filled with boats and ships, Handel and his orchestra performed the masterpiece to celebrate the beauty of the river and the reign of Handel’s friend. 2019 BAROQUE SERIES Vesa-Matti Leppänen Director/Violin Bridget Douglas Flute Corelli Concerto Grosso in D major, Op. 6 No.1 Telemann Overture-Suite in D, TWV 55:D21 Vivaldi Flute Concerto in G minor, Op. 10 No. 2 La Notte Fux Overture in D minor, E109 Telemann Overture-Suite in D, TWV 55:D22 As a violinist and composer, Corelli played a major role in the establishment of the Concerto Grosso, where a small group of soloists perform within a larger ensemble. Corelli’s Concerto Grosso in D major uses this style to great effect, as melodies are passed between small and large ensembles within the work. Telemann’s family preferred for him to study law and forbade him from playing or learning music. He composed in secret and by age 12 had created the opera from which Overture-Suite D21 was derived, including, in Vesa-Matti Leppänen’s opinion “one of the most beautiful movements ever written.” La Notte (The Night) is the second of Vivaldi’s six flute concertos from his Opus. 10. Performed in several short movements, it has a sense of the supernatural about it. NZSO Section Principal Flute Bridget Douglas features, taking on what she considers a rewarding, but technically challenging workout. Johann Joseph Fux could be considered a forgotten genius of the Baroque period. As a theorist, his ideas explored harmony and intervals in music through mathematics. As a composer, his Overture in D minor lets you hear the beauty in its mathematical pureness. Telemann’s Overture-Suite D22 is a fitting ending to the programme. Again, Telemann shows his skills in describing feelings and emotions in a work that showcases his brilliance.
