Made In Chelsea’s Jamie Laing and Francis Boulle reveal they’re like two peas in a podcast Words by Kirsten Jones I ’m in a Central London café with Made In Chelsea favourites Francis Boulle and Jamie Laing. Not one fellow diner clocks them, which is a good job as we’re about to discuss their Private Parts. Don’t worry – not those – it’s the name of their podcast which heads out on a UK tour on Thursday. But first, there’s breakfast. “There’s a big rumour that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I don’t think it is,” says Jamie. “It’s not a rumour, it was a marketing campaign in the 1930s,” says Francis. “When you eat, your insulin levels spike then drop. That’s why you feel lethargic after breakfast. If you want a consistent plane of energy, you shouldn’t eat in the morning.” With that in mind, we skip the eggs and get down to business. If you haven’t tuned into the boys’ podcast, what you’ve just read is a pretty good taster. In a nutshell it’s two 29-year-old guys having a good old chat, baring their souls and revealing their innermost insecurities. They invite a celebrity or two along to do the same, play a few pranks and make our morning commutes a little lighter as their gaffes flow through our headphones. “We talk about doing ayahuasca [a hallucinogenic drug] in the Bolivian jungle and thinking you’re a truffle pig. Why should you hide Funny stories like this?” asks Jamie. “A lot of it is about insecurities. Men are very bad at opening up about their fears and worries. We get deeper than someone’s fear of spiders.” Private Parts began in a cupboard in the South of France (yes, really), with Francis reading the best of Jamie’s teenage travel diary. It soon morphed into a global show – with a new diary – attracting half a million listeners every month. “We were literally dripping with laughter – and sweat,” Francis grins. “We make each other SPIRIT MEDIA laugh and we wanted to share that. So far, you’ve all loved it, too.” The pair’s guests have included comedians James Acaster and Joel Dommett and they have a hopeful eye on the likes of Hugh Grant and Jeremy Corbyn (although after prank calling the holding back? That’s why we called the podcast I order catering for 20 people then I put each Labour leader, Jamie doesn’t have high hopes). Private Parts. INTERVIEW “People don’t think we work hard and it feels good to prove them wrong,” says Jamie. “We knew we might get our initial listeners from Made In Chelsea viewers but we wanted to broaden our audience.” The Private Parts Live Tour, they tell me, is a play of sorts with lots of improvisation – like the podcast – and the audience gets involved, too. The scripted show delves into embarrassing tales and the pair open up about the reality of celebrity. “What you realise is when you gain fame it’s not that impressive or exciting and you get trolled online a lot,” says Jamie. The tour opens at Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe, a move that has apparently ruffled a few feathers in the world of comedy. “I think some comedians look upon two reality stars at Underbelly with some disdain,” says “Fame isn’t that impressive or exciting and you get trolled a lot” Francis. “We’re not trying to claim that we’re comedians – but we do enjoy having a laugh. business I guarantee that people who get a ticket are not going to be disappointed. That’s not a money-back guarantee, by the way.” The two admit that putting their lives on show for television has made it easier for them to open up and share their emotions. They both have a background in acting and drama and despite this being their first foray onstage together, Francis is confident they will both come out smiling. “What we’re trying to say is we’re made beyond the gossip and girls and you’ll soon own best-selling book Boulle’s Jewels: The for this,” he insists. realise they are both more than just good looking Business Of Life (see Bookshop, page 77). boys who like to party. INTERVIEW Among his famous friends are George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio, all of whom have collaborated with Armani, but Gian Luca isn’t one to name-drop. When asked who he’s been most impressed to meet, whether through his career in fashion or his wife, he skirts the question. “It’s about the person in front of me, not how famous they are,” he insists. I feel very lucky to live there and it’s a place where friends always want to come and visit you,” he says. But it is at home in Italy where his heart is. “It’s my favourite place to go back to and we go back often. When the family is back together it’s beautiful,” he says.
