George Floyd: When will Derek Chauvin be sentenced?
T he eyes of the US - and the wider world -
have been fixed on a courthouse in
Minnesota, following the trial of Derek
Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in May
2020.
The former police officer kneeled on the neck of
the African-American man for more than nine
minutes during an arrest in the city of
Minneapolis, ignoring pleas that he couldn't
breathe. Mr Floyd was declared dead an hour
later.
On Tuesday, a jury found Chauvin guilty of
second-degree murder, third-degree murder and
manslaughter following a three-week trial.

PRESS RELEASE
W ednesday, April 21, 2021. The National Civil Society Council of Liberia is deeply concerned, worried and taken aback over
the recent wave of unprecedented violations of the fundamental rights of Ms. Augustina Gray as guarantee by Article 2 of the
UN Universal Declaration of Human Right and Article 1 of the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights.
The Council categorically condemned all verbal and written descriptions, abuses and denigration by segment of the general population
due to the verified conversations ignited and sustained by Mr. Mo Ali to Ms. Augustina Gray. These actions (consistent calls for abortion)
by Mr. Ali, and well-coordinated political-media related denigration messages via social media platforms, undermined the dignity,
health, and social interaction, thereby amounting to defamation and negligence or reckless inflation of emotional distress to and against
the person of Ms. Gray, which has the propensity of affecting her capacity to achieve her full potentials a responsible global citizen.
To ensure the public full adherence of the Constitution and international conventions and protocols that protect the rights of a person, the
Council through her official Facebook page encouraged the general public to fully uphold the rights and dignity of all parties. We
respectfully staged a phone call to with Mr. Ali and further his confirmation of his action (voice recording).Pursuant to our role, function
and responsibility as CSOs' coordinating body, we had direct and indirect conversations with relevant parties.
The Council also diversified her engagements platforms, holding consultations with legal, health and policy minded practitioners and
institutions. These engagements strengthen our resolved.
Our observation of the outburst of immoral well staged condemnations of Ms. Gray on social media simply point out the power of cyber
bullying. These recordings contradict an early version from a moral minded and scared defenseless female rejecting abortion on religious
principle and lack of personal experience. The new recordings have further put Ms. Gray at greater harm's way. We hope her videos
expression were purely conscious, not tailor by any extended, influence, inducement or intimidation. Every action exerted on Ms. Gray
undermined her dignity and violated her fundamental rights.
The Council, in keeping with the ongoing situation, the acceptance of guilt from Mr. Ali, the moral implications, and unforeseen health
and personal security of Ms. Gray, we recommend the following:
1.That the Coalition of Political Parties (CPP) and the Unity Party take appropriate steps aimed at reprimanding Mr. Mo Ali for criminal
solicitation and coercion;
2. That the Government of Liberia directly or through non-state actors provides vigorous, and sustained psycho-social intervention and
security, if need arises – fulfilling Article 15 (a) and Article 16;
3. In keeping with the recent video being posted on social media which contradict the audio recordings initially published by electronic
and social media, the Council is worried due the huge contradiction and call for stronger support for Ms. Gray. This should include the
persistent family concern and counsel, state investigation surrounding Ms. Gray actions and current state-of-being. This abrupt changes
from a sober character to irrational state-of-being raises doubt of consciousness and increases the sense of coercion or strong extended
influence.
It is a matter of caution that we encourage all Liberians and the media, that irrespective of our alignment to any member of the party, to
kindly respect their rights and dignity. All matters surrounding these recordings must be handled legally and avoid public destruction of
the parties' character, image, and further curtail all verbal abuse, condemnation and harassment of Ms. Gray.
The Council lastly call on all officials of public institutions and political parties, civil society and private institutions to cultivate a moral
character consistent with the value of morality, human rights and human dignity as they build relationships/partnerships, provide
technical or financial interventions to marginalis segments of the population. These are moral obligations require of all decent citizens
and public officials
