PHYSIOTHERAPY AND SPORTS INJURY CLINIC
                            CLAIRE VAN WINGERDEN MCSP
CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST REGISTERED WITH THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL

Acupuncture is a form of treatment that promotes healing. It involves the
insertion of fine needles into specific points in the body. It has been used for
thousands of years in China and since the 1970’s in Western Medicine.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce endorphins and oxytocin, its own
pain and stress relieving chemicals. It may promote sleep by stimulating the
release of melatonin in the body and may encourage a sense of well-being by
stimulating the release of serotonin. Acupuncture also stimulates nerve fibres
to block out pain signals and helps reduce the sensitivity of tender points in
  the body.

To me, acupuncture and physiotherapy go hand in hand. I qualified as a
Chartered Physiotherapist (MCSP) in 1991 and as a qualified Acupuncturist
(MAACP) in 1994. I am regulated by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered
Physiotherapists and have to maintain regular CPD (continued professional
development) to remain a member of both.

As a Physiotherapist I have a deep understanding of the body in terms of anatomy and medical conditions that can
affect it across a very wide spectrum. Using acupuncture as a treatment with this broad and varied medical training
from being a Chartered Physiotherapist allows me to fully assess the condition or symptoms being presented. To have
a choice of treatments from conventional physiotherapy ‘hands on’ treatments such as joint mobilisation or soft tissue
massage, and to add the use of acupuncture alongside these other treatments to further aid pain relief and increase
range of movement and function, is of great value.

The needles I use are single use, sterile fine gauge that are applied via an applicator tube. They vary in length
depending on the area of the body they are being inserted into but are very easy to insert and acupuncture should not
be painful. Most commonly I use between 2 and 8 needles. You may feel a temporary pricking sensation and a feeling
of warmth, heaviness or mild ache around the needle may be felt during treatment. Needles may be used directly
around the injured or affected area or further along a limb. The needles may be inserted between 5 and 30 minutes.

The most common use of acupuncture for me is for very acute pain such as sciatica or whiplash or very chronic pain
such as joint arthritis. Acupuncture is also being used as a form of pain relief in cancer and neurological conditions as
the side effects are minimal. I often use acupuncture to aid sports injury recovery and will always discuss the
treatment options with you. I often find acupuncture can help when all conventional methods fail or simply are not
enough and often comment how I couldn’t do without it as a tool in my ‘physiotherapy toolbox’. My patients will vouch
              t
for it as a treatment but it won’t, like everything, cure everyone! One to several sessions may be needed depending on
  the condition being treated.

If you feel that you would like acupuncture as a treatment please feel free to contact me to discuss. As a
Physiotherapist I will always assess and discuss treatment options and will generally combine any treatment I offer
with advice, exercises and other professional support.

February This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and birds
and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There’s plenty to do
indoors this month, all in preparation for the season ahead. Outdoors, the garden is
coming to life again, and its time to prune shrubs

Essential jobs this month
1. Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow
      some vegetables under cover

2. Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines
      and peaches

3. Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep
      the birds off 1 2

those that need planting ‘in the green’

5. Chit potato tubers

6. Prune hardy evergreen hedges and
      renovate overgrown deciduous hedges

Other jobs to consider 3 4

The Languedoc region, covering the Mediterranean coastal plain west of the Rhone, produces a lot of
fairly ordinary red wine, much of it marketed as VDQS or Vin de Pays. Languedoc is the largest French
wine producing area in terms of volume. There are seven Appellations controlées in the area, the
best-known of which is Corbières, and possibly the best average quality of which is Fitou. AOC wines
account for some 10% of the region’s production, but the proportion is increasing as Languedoc
producers concentrate more on quality, rather than quantity, and strive to reposition their wines
                                            higher up the market.

Thanks to the long hours of summer sun, grapes ripen well and quickly in this region, which means that
Languedoc wines are rich and full bodied, and often have high alcohol content. Rather different from
the rest are the sparkling wines produced in Limoux, near Carcassonne. “Blanquette de Limoux” is
reputedly the oldest sparkling wine in France. It is well documented that Limoux was already producing
sparkling wines in the 1540s, half a century before the technique took hold in Champagne.

Our 2 most popular wines from this region are:

Chocolate & Raspberry Cake

T here is nothing more romantic than sharing a meal with your loved one and
nothing more decadent than the partnership of dark
                              chocolate and raspberries!
This recipe takes a simple chocolate sponge and then sandwiches it together
with a white chocolate ganache and then tops it with a rich dark chocolate
ganache. Ganache was invented in French patisserie in Paris in the 1850s and
is normally made by heating cream and blending with chocolate. Butter is then
usually added to give the ganache a shiny appearance and a smooth texture.
However you spend your Valentine’s Day this year, why not make this cake with
its indulgent topping. If you’ve no Valentine to share the cake with, never mind –
it just means more cake for you!!

Just you, a canine companion and magnificent
nature. At Gabba Husky Kennel near Kirkenes,
eager huskies await taking you on a hike into
the surrounding mountain wilderness. Enjoy
the thrill of a mountain hike in the far north
of Norway and the company of a friendly
husky. Fill your soul with incredible views of
the surrounding area and mountains.
Set out to sea with working fisherman to
catch your own lunch – a king crab. Enjoy an
unforgettable fishing tour in Kirkenes as you
sail out to the best fishing area in the Barents
Sea before pulling up huge fishing cages set
to catch the magnificent king crabs found in
the area.
Groups are then taken to a cosy, local
fisherman’s house to have the catch of
the day for lunch, indulging on as much
of the fresh, delicate crab meat as they
can muster.

The season when the summer sun never sets,
even at midnight. The variety of colours of
Norway’s coast are never more vivid than in
the summer season; painted skies, turquoise
fjords, emerald forests, and stark mountains
are truly a stunning sight to behold in these
months. The longer days invite exploration,
and Norwegian locals spend these months
leisurely reconnecting with nature; hiking,
kayaking, birdwatching, and fishing.
