About the Institute The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) serves as a regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region. It was established in Mumbai in July 1956, till July 1970 it was known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) and till 1985 it was known as the International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS). The Institute was re-designated to its present title in 1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a 'Deemed University' in August 19, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The recognition has facilitated the award of recognized degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. Started in 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations, it has established itself as the premier Institute for training and research in Population Studies for developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region. IIPS holds a unique position among all the regional centres, in that it was the first such centre to be started, and serves a much larger population than that served by any of the other regional centres. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Besides teaching and research activities, the Institute also provides consultancy to the Government and Non-Government organizations and other academic institutions. Over the years, the Institute has helped in building a nucleus of professionals in the field of population and health in various countries of the ESCAP region. During the past 53 years, students from 42 different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have been trained at the Institute. Many, who are trained at the Institute, now occupy key positions in the field of Population and Health in Government of various countries, Universities and Research Institutes as well as in reputed National and International organizations. From Director’s Desk It is my great pleasure to introduce one of the oldest Institutes in the discipline of demography in the country, International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai whose history goes way back to 1956. IIPS has been recognised as Deemed University by UGC in the year 1985 considering its wide contribution to the field of demographic and health research, teaching and training. The Institute is able to successfully blend cutting edge research with teaching, with the help of a set of accomplished members of faculty having a multidisciplinary background. The students are equipped in dealing with large datasets, use advanced quantitative techniques and learn how to interpret to results for better policy and programme interventions. They are also encouraged to use qualitative techniques for their dissertation for a comprehensive understanding of the society. Our students excel in the fields of Population Sciences and Biostatistics. We are proud to be the hub of nationally important surveys such as the National Family and Health Survey (NFHS), Longitudinal Survey of Ageing in India (LASI) etc. Our collaborations with international organisations such as UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO etc as well as with world’s leading universities help us to groom and expose our students in the emerging areas of population studies and health research. Best Wishes Dr. K.S. James, Director & Senior Professor MPHIL PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2019-20
Message from the Placement Coordinators International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) is a premier institution in the field of Demography and Health Sciences. Over the years, the Institute has helped in building a nucleus of professionals in the field of population and health in various countries of the ESCAP region. Many, who are trained at the Institute, now occupy key positions in the field of Population and Health in governments of various countries, Universities and Research Institutes as well as in reputed National and International organizations. This brochure contains details of our Master of Philosophy in Population Studies / Biostatistics & Demography (MPhil.) program and brief CV of the graduating students. They received formal training both in the theoretical and technical aspects of Population Studies at IIPS. The MPhil. course has been specifically designed to impart holistic understanding of various aspects of research methodology and advanced statistical analysis. Students are trained in soft wares dealing with both quantitative and qualitative data analysis as well as in demographic packages. They are capable of undertaking research studies and to handle large scale survey datasets efficiently. As part of their course, they are preparing a dissertation under the guidance of a faculty on the topic of their research interest. We appreciate and value our partnership with recruiting agencies, alumni and friends of IIPS. We are committed to make your recruiting experience at our Institute productive and positive. Message from the Alumni Message from Alumni "IIPS is the best place to learn demography or Population Studies in India. IIPS alumni are spread over from important Ministries of the Government of India to a Population Research Centre; from Prestigious University/colleges to NGOs working at the grassroots level; from UNDESA to best-ranked universities/institutes of North America or Europe or South Africa, or anywhere in the globe! Personally, IIPS opened a new horizon for me... IIPS taught a lot on applied statistics, data analysis & management and oral & written communication, but more than that IIPS taught "professionalism"! It is the training of IIPS for which students dare to dream beyond their limit..." With best wishes Dr. Nandita Saikia Assistant Professor Centre for the Study of Regional Development School of Social Science, JNU, New Delhi MPHIL PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2019-20
Why hire us? IIPS firmly believes that the proliferation of ideas provides a base to the framework of success but it goes hand in hand with the art of communicating the same ideas to others. The institute focuses on the skills of the students to present their ideas in front of their teachers and peers. Apart from the well-built theoretical concepts, the academic programme at IIPS is rigorous with a strong inclination towards the honing of the students analytical skills. Students are bolstered with a variety of data analytics software like R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, CSPro, MortPak and ArcGIS, GeoDa. The application of theory in an appropriate analytical framework, along with empirical evidence, is an assured test of the students understanding of the concepts at hand and ensures that he/she is comfortable with handling big datasets. The course requires students from multidisciplinary backgrounds to work together and share knowledge. The environment provided by the college ensures a holistic approach to the development of students both at the personal and professional level.
