The Steamship Katahdin Visit The Maine Highlands for a vacation experience like no other in America. For many years, water traffic was the main mode of transportation in this region. Steamboats carried livestock, equipment, supplies and passengers. The need for Moosehead steamboats waned with the coming of roads. The last survivor of the fleet, the Katahdin became a towboat hauling pulpwood rafts. In 1975, she hauled her last log boom across Moosehead Lake to the East Outlet. Scott Paper Company presented the Katahdin to the Moosehead Marine Museum in 1977. In 1985, after many years of devoted work by many, the Katahdin, Queen of the fleet, once again sailed over the deep waters of Moosehead Lake.
