Pentti Viitala, father of six, made the most courageous decision
of his life when he bought a lorry with his friend and began
to re-upholster used sofas in the henhouse on his home farm.

technology and equipment. With added capabilities, tasks
like sewing, cutting foam and other upholstery work could
now be performed in-house.

working full-time within its three production facilities totaling more than 1 million square feet.

It’s Our Heritage
Our sustainable manufacturing processes are part of our
heritage. Finland maintains very strict environmental
standards which we have grown to live by. Roughly 80% of
the country is lake and forest which puts a big emphasis
on sustainability in our culture. This is not something we
do to be on trend but rather it’s done simply because it’s
who we are and where we come from.
Our sustainability efforts begin at the start of the
manufacturing process – the raw material. Owning
Viitala Forest, our family timber business, we understand
exactly where our materials come from. We mainly
havest, Nordic Spruce and Birch to be used in our sofa
frames. The life cycle of one of our forests is roughly 80
years and when it’s harvested the trees are replaced for
future use.
Throughout our production process we produce roughly
four thousand pounds of wood waste daily. Instead of
writing it off as waste, we covert the by-product into
pellets. It’s then used in wood-fired ovens to heat all three
of our factories, local schools, and a local town.
To keep our factory clean, once our design team has
perfected our foam core shape, the template is sent to
our supplier. This ensures our foam shape is accurate

the factory.

be harvested and prepared for
it’s next generation of care.
SAW DUST
Each day, our factory vacuum
systems collect nearly four
thousand pounds of saw dust
and deposits it into central
locations. These systems
play an integral role in the
cleanliness our our facilities
while also centralizing the by-
product for re-purposing.
