    Writing                   • If you were the Little Red Hen, would you share the bread you baked?
                                Explain why you would or why you would not share the bread you baked.
                              • Write a letter from one of the farm animals to the Little Red Hen,
                                apologising for not helping her bake the bread.
                                Start your letter with “Dear Little Red Hen”.
                              • Write down the steps that the Little Red Hen followed
                                to bake the bread.
                                Make a list of ingredients that Little Red Hen used.

    Legs in the barn.
•   In the barn there are some hens, and the rest are pigs. There are 20 legs in all. How many pigs
    and hens are there altogether? Show your working out by drawing pictures.

•   The Little Red Hen was clearing the garden and she found 4 grains of wheat. Then she found 6
    more grains of wheat, she picked them up as well. As she kept on clearing the garden, she
    found 2 more grains of wheat. How many did she have altogether?

•   The Little Red Hen had 12 grains of wheat.
    She wanted to plant them in 4 different fields, shared equally.
    How many would there be in each field?
    Show your working by drawing fields and grain to
    help you work it out.

•   Have a look at the picture on the right and work out how many Little Red Hens, stems
    of wheat, sacks of grain, bags of flour, dogs, cats, ducks, farmhouse, and windmills
    you can see. Draw a table to display your results.

Go around your house and garden and find things you can push or pull or can push and pull. Draw a picture
and label these things in the columns.

Garden Cart

Challenge: Design and build a garden cart that The Little Red Hen can use to carry the wheat and the garden tools.

Directions:

  1. Gather the materials that you might need. You could use boxes, tissue boxes, plastic containers for the cart body. You could use
     straws, chopsticks, toothpicks, lids for the axles and wheels.

  2. Build your garden cart. Follow your plan that you have designed on your planning sheet.

  3. Test your cart. Does it roll? Can it carry some things?

  4. If not, what changes can you do to make it work?

Tongan Language week     Tonga Language Week / Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga gives students of all ethnicities the chance to learn some

      5th – 11th September     basic lea faka-Tonga and gives students who speak lea faka-Tonga the chance to be experts in the classroom (even from
                               home). Currently, there are more Tongan people born in New Zealand than there are in Tonga, giving lea faka-Tonga
                               (the Tonga language) and anga faka-Tonga (Tonga culture) a special place here in Aotearoa.

Handprint art

  1. Get three popsicle sticks and glue them into a triangle shape. Leave to dry.
  2. Trace around both hands onto red paper.
  3. Cut out the hand shapes and lay them flat with the thumbs pointing up. Overlap the palms slightly and
    secure with glue.

                                4. Cut out a red triangle that will be placed within the popsicle sticks and form the
                                   body of the hen.
                                5. Cut out an orange triangle for the beak, and a little white hat.
                                6. Cut out some orange legs.
                                7. Paint the popsicle sticks red and glue all the paper in place. Don’t forget to add
                                   on eyes!

Sports
The floor is lava!
With your family, travel from one end of a room to the other end without touching
the floor. Use pillows, cushions, mats.
E.g., 4 family members = 5 items.

Each member of your family can choose to be a different animal from the story. As you make your way through
the course each time you accidentally touch the ‘lava’ you have to make the noise of your chosen animal.
