Introduction Table of Contents Here at Minnesota, we engage dental students in leadership, travel, outreach and a variety of activities to welcome them into a lifetime of involvement in organized dentistry. MN ASDA Text descriptions of : is the gold standard of ASDA chapters. Here at the University of MN school of dentistry, we have a tradition of excellence and strength Membership & Communications which we continue to improve upon each year. We fulfill the Advocacy mission of ASDA to “Advance and protect the rights, interests and welfare of dental students.” We support our dental students Activities professionally with educational resources. We give them Fundraising opportunities to help others in the community through outreach. We support the issues that matter most to them through advocacy. We Pre-dental engage them into this amazing organization and give people a chance to develop and enhance their leadership skills. You can’t take an exam about leadership skills, you have to do it. There are many things you can’t learn in dental school or the school can't provide for a student, We are here to fill that gap and more. Not only does our chapter embody ASDA’s core values of Leadership passion, engagement, integrity and community, but we constantly strive to improve our chapter and everything we offer our members. We value our members and listen to what they want and they value their membership and are engaged in their profession through our organization. This year a member saw a deficiency in the Travel organization so, we stepped up to fill it and created the new Dental entrepreneurship committee. Sometimes it’s learning a new technique at a LnL, or traveling abroad to provide service work. Whatever it is, ASDA is here. Our members have been fantastic at continuing traditions, initiating new ideas, and being passionately involved in ASDA. Outreach We are a multiple faceted chapter with many golden components. In this book we will highlight a quick overview of our year and then go into our 4 key categories: Lovely Leaders, Terrific Travel, Outstanding Outreach and Amazing Activities. We hope you enjoy reading about our year….We had a great one. We are Minnesota ASDA, We are Golden Gophers and we Go-For the Gold. Leadership Retreat and Monthly Meetings In late June 2016, we held our annual leadership retreat to welcome our new team. We headed over to Alchemy in Northeast, Minneapolis for a crossfit and yoga class. Afterwards, we enjoyed healthy snacks and met with special guest speakers MDA President Dr. Cannon and MDA Speaker of the House Dr. Taylor. They shared their wealth of knowledge and some fun stories. Everyone left thinking about what our organized dentistry elevator pitches should include and the importance of being an advocate for ASDA and the ADA. Together, we have a strong voice and can do amazing things. These leaders are fit in body and leadership skills. Monthly leadership meetings are hosted at the MDA three times a year. These meetings also include fun awards, such as Committee Chair of the Month Award & Rep of the Month Award. We aim to inspire our entire MN ASDA team monthly. These meetings update all leaders on current and upcoming events, keep all leaders connected, and motivate all to continue to lead their committees.
Jane Yang - MDA Trustee The Minnesota ASDA Chapter is unique and distinct in that we are recognized as a full-fledged district of the Minnesota Dental Association. We have student representation on almost every committee within the Dental Association and are continually involved with local events and meetings. Our district contributes a student member as our representing Trustee of the Student District. As is tradition, this is always the Immediate Past President of Minnesota ASDA. As a part of this role, I sit on the 14 member Board of Trustees. This is comprised of the eight District Trustees, four members of the Executive Committee, Speaker of the House, and the Executive Director. The board meets approximately six times annually, where we all come together for one or two day-long meetings, fueled with coffee, and take care of MDA business. The board is tasked with tackling, debating, discussing and delegating plans put forth at each House of Delegates, and responds to other issues that presents itself during the year. As the only student and youngest member of the board, it is extremely rewarding to feel that my input and comments are highly valued. The future of the dental association lies with our students and often the group looks to me for perspective as a young person, and as a dental student. This is especially true this year in regards to declining membership, interest from new dentists and licensure examination within Minnesota. It has been a great honor to sit on this board, getting to know several passionate dentists from the state and share in the experience of the board. We are truly lucky as a chapter to have such a strong healthy reciprocal relationship with our state organization. Jane Yang
Minnesota Dental Association The MDA supports the students in many ways. We are a full district of the MDA and the leadership often expresses amazement at our energy and amount of activities that we pursue as an organization. They support us in an organizational sense, help process memberships, and aid us in keeping our books in order. They also help us put on several events throughout the year including the vendor fair, student networking night, MN MOM, Star of the North, and GKAS. Aaron Henderson - Licensure Chair and National Vice President Following the proceedings of ASDA’s 2016 Annual Session, the incoming and outgoing executive officers meet to have a rapid and in-depth information exchange to facilitate the very beginning stages of a smooth transition into new positions. Well before submitting the application to run for a position on the executive committee, I knew the workload would be intense and probably unlike positions I’d in the past held. When one of the outgoing vice presidents stated, “I had over 1,300 emails, and they were the ones which required a response,” it was confirmed just how intense it might be. Looking at my own inbox, the count is currently at 1,570, though thankfully not every one of those needed a direct response. It might suffice to say, at least judging by the administrative load, there’s been a lot going on during the last 10 months. Our executive committee journey began as a struggle through the campaign and caucusing rigors of ASDA Annual Session which immediately launched us into representing the Association the following weekend at ADEA’s national meeting. From that point on we’ve worked rather tirelessly to represent ASDA in the professional realm as well as to guide and shape the Association during our seemingly short tenure. Streams of emails, conference calls and frequent trips around the country allowed our executive committee to keep intimately connected with each other and issues important to U.S. dental students. From those calls and letters, we’d bring discussion points to the Board of Trustees or other parties of interest for action. Topics ranged from the Association’s budget, strategic plan and the process of initial dental licensure to mentoring, committee assignments and inter-association dynamics and politics. While we on the EC have vested interest in all of these topics plus a great many more, a personal project was to chair ASDA’s delegation to the 2016 ADA House of Delegates. This opportunity put me at the head of the table, overseeing our five delegates and five alternate delegates as we navigated the political playing field of the American Dental Association’s largest yearly gathering. The remaining time in our position will be spent crafting the Association’s budget, aiding in appointment of new national leaders, attending district meetings and facilitating the transition to the newest executive committee. Bound to be busy until the very end, the tenure on ASDA’s national executive committee was at times tumultuous and always kept us on our toes. In the end, it has been a tremendous experience steeped in personal and professional growth and character-building for me and the other student dentists representing our Association. Initial dental licensure continues to be a topic of significant discussion at all levels of dentistry, from students and states to practicing dentists and the various dental associations. Minnesota has been a leader for change in the process as they eschewed the requirement for students to complete a traditional licensure examination and instead instituted the Canadian Objective Structured Clinical Examination to license new graduates in the field. Some headway is being made on the creation of an American OSCE by the ADA, but with a history of glacial progress, we must be vigilant in trying to move change forward, but also ensuring that change doesn’t set the progress already made in reverse. MN ASDA students will receive a lecture in January 2017 explaining the steps necessary for completion of the University of Minnesota’s graduation requirements which then leads to initial dental licensure. The presentation will include parts I and II of the NBDE, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry- specific graduation competencies and the entire layout of the initial dental licensure examination experience to be expected of a dental student. Feedback from past licensure presentations has been positive as few, if any, other outlets provide the same information in a concise session. Talks will continue with the Minnesota Dental Association on the future course of licensure within the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The current licensure process within the state has been shown to have glaring inadequacies regarding portability and further, has left itself open to being assailed by those who would see little benefit in changing the status quo. Minnesota lead the charge toward change in this process and the onus will be on the dental students and other vested communities to ensure that things are changed for the better for everyone involved, patient and student alike. Publications MN ASDA’s local newsletter, The Central Groove was continued in excellence! We created a modern publication with high quality articles written by our own members on a variety of topics. It was composed of beautiful pictures, clean lines, and lots of color. There was also an emphasis on getting more members involved. Our newsletter allowed everyone to see how many creative and talented people are a part of MN ASDA. The Central Groove articles included the usual ASDA updates from local and national events, as well as articles about mental health, faculty features, and international outreach. It was a truly unique and exceptional publication, just like our chapter. This year we went green and disseminated out publications solely electronically. Each year, the current MN ASDA President serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Minnesota Dental Association: Northwest Dentistry. In each of the six issues each year, they give an update from the Student District and also have the opportunity to write other articles. Each MN ASDA member gets Northwest Dentistry delivered to their student mailbox. Our own D3, Jerad Servais, is the current editor of the Articul8or (District 8’s publication). Along with last year’s editor Robert Huot (MN ASDA member), MN ASDA members have worked hard to redesign and refresh this fun publication for the district. Many MN ASDA members write articles for this “punny” publication.
Communications Mid-Year Membership Survey -A mid-year feedback survey was sent to all students of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in December, 2016 to improve MN ASDA’s programming, inspire new events, and to ensure we are meeting our members’ needs. -At this time, we have had over 30 people respond and have learned a lot about what our members’ value, what we are doing well, and how we can improve as and ASDA chapter -Feedback was given about our publications, advertising for upcoming events, and future social outing opportunities. -There was also a space to volunteer an idea and help to implement it. We hope to use this feedback to inspire our leaders in the coming calendar year to serve our members more effectively. -Those who took the survey were entered in a drawing for a gift card. Website Our website is currently undergoing a dramatic update. During various initiatives, it was identified that our website was one of our chapter's weaknesses. We decided in December 2016 to switch domains to SquareSpace and completely revamp our web approach. We have many ideas in development in order to make our website, simple, mobile friendly, and relevant. We also wanted a website that was easier to pass from webmaster to webmaster. Stay tuned for something golden in 2017. Facebook and Instagram While our website is under construction, our main modes of communications and most effective continue to be instagram and FB. Most likes, more posts more events this year!
Terrific Travel
ASDA Annual Session 2016 - Dallas, TX Our chapter rounded up Nine MN ASDA members to bring to the 2016 ASDA Annual Session in Dallas, Texas! Members participated in various breakout sessions, voted for the new National and District leadership, and developed new connections with dental students across the country. Being recognized for the top 5 Gold Crown Ideal Chapter Award was humbling. We are very fortunate for our membership and grateful National ASDA honored our chapter. We are incredibly proud that our own Aaron Henderson ran for the Presidency along with five other very talented individuals, and was elected Vice-President! We also congratulate Sohaib Soliman of Washington and Jordan Telin of Buffalo for being elected to the Presidency and Vice-Presidency, respectively. Research Poster Presentation Two of our members, Katie Anderson and Jared Servais presented their research. Jared placed third for his research in analyzing bone fractals in patients with impacted canines. Congratulations to them and all the research participants!
National Lobby Day - Washington, D.C. 18 MN ASDA members attended ASDA’s National Dental Student Lobby Day. The most we have ever sent on a trip! We obtained a generous grant from the office of Dean Leon Assael at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in the sum of $5000 to help cover expenses. We spent four days in Washington, D.C. visiting the city and taking in the sights. MN ASDA members lobbied for access to dental health care and student loan refinancing.
MDA House of Delegates - Bloomington, MN The MDA House of Delegates was held in September in Bloomington, MN. More house time was devoted to discussion of resolutions that affected the students directly, making our presence and voice extremely important. We sent four delegates and four alternate delegates as well as student district trustee. President and president-elect also sit on the reference committees which is a great way to understand the resolutions better. The greatest discussion came from a resolution surrounding licensure which was actually brought to the floor by the president of CRDTS. A lot of lively discussion ensued about whether or not to include CIF model as an exception for not using live patients in an exam. The resolution was defeated. Another resolution brought forth from the St.Paul District wanted to increase the number of delegates from the student district. It was defeated but we will address it again in 2017. We feel so supported by the MDA and excited to enact changes that will affect us now and when we practice.
National Leadership Conference - Chicago, IL Ten MN ASDA Members – including five first year dental students – embarked on a road trip to the NLC in Chicago. Our attendees took advantage of the numerous breakout sessions, heard from inspirational speakers such as Doc Hendley, and socialized with students across the country. Further, the atmosphere in Chicago was electric following the Cubs World Series victory! We had many highlights, as the conference motivated all of us to continue our leadership with ASDA. Furthermore, our attendees presented information they gained from the conference and encouraged current members to attend future events to catch that ASDA Fever! A Lunch N’ Learn presentation was a great way to bring information back to the chapter and practice public speaking!
Unparalleled Outstanding Outreach
Elementary Outreach MN ASDA has been involved with elementary outreach throughout the Twin Cities. We annually go to several elementary schools and the Nativity Family and Child Center in Northeast Minneapolis. This year, we did interactive activities with four-year-old and five-year-old children. Some activities included categorizing pictures of food that were bad or good for your teeth. We also put Play-Doh in big Lego blocks and gave them yarn to “floss” out the Play-Doh. To practice brushing techniques, we brought stuffed animals and toothbrushes for them to brush the animal’s teeth. Most importantly, we offered gloves, masks, mirrors, safety-glasses, and lab coats for them to dress up as a dentist! As a chapter, we hope they learned how to take care of their teeth, are comfortable around dentists during their appointments, and perhaps dream of becoming a dentist!

MN MOM is always one of the best weekends of the year! This year on July 22-23 in Moorhead, MN, the best of the best in the dental community came together to provide care to numerous Minnesotans and North Dakotans. Students had the excellent opportunity to work with and learn from some of the kindest dentists in the state. For me, being a part of MN MOM reminds me why I pursued a career in dentistry and keeps excited me for the future. After a long day at MOM, I’m undoubtedly exhausted but still energized from the grateful patients and kind colleagues. This year 3 MN ASDA members were on the planning committee for this event: Karin Englund, Kelly Djerf and Tara Orech with Faculty oversight from Dr. Hall. More than 70 MN ASDA members volunteered in planning, assisting, radiology, operating, and set-up and take down. In 2016, Mission of Mercy provided over $1 million worth of treatment! Pre-Dental Recruitment On February 21, 2016, approximately 30 pre-dental and dental students gathered at Moos Tower for the “Impression Session.” Pre-dents had the opportunity to take alginate impressions of typodonts, learn how to evaluate them, and pour them up in dental stone. This was an excellent session for pre-dents to learn about one of the most important steps of treatment planning. On May 1, 2016, approximately 40 pre-dental and dental students were in attendance for the “Condense and Carve Amalgam” event. Attending students learned how to condense, carve, and burnish amalgam restorations. Along with great conversation, networking, and mentoring, this event truly was truly a success. On September 26, 2016, our ASDA Pre-Dental Recruitment Committee Chairs spoke at the University of Minnesota Pre-Dental Club’s first fall meeting. A brief presentation was given on the benefits of joining ASDA as a pre-dental member, upcoming events, and how to join. On October 29, 2016, the “Wax & Relax” session took place. This is the premier fall event for MN ASDA’s Pre-Dental Recruitment Committee. This year, 35 pre-dents and dental students assembled for the event. Pre-dental students had the excellent opportunity to put their hand skills to the test in waxing up a maxillary central incisor. As always, the event was complimented by application advice and information about life in dental school from volunteering dental students..
High School Outreach On October 27, 2016, MN ASDA’s High School Outreach Committee Chair teamed up with Mary Vanderwert from the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation, and spoke with 30 Roosevelt High School students in the IB program about America’s Toothfairy Project. This project aims to educate and raise awareness on pediatric dental disease. Students were informed how they can get involved by collecting donated dental supplies, provided with resources to be able to educate elementary students, and educated on the importance of oral health. On November 11, 2016, 13 members of the High School Outreach Committee went to the Hilton Hotel Mall of America where the HOSA Fall Conference was hosted. The attending members talked with 175 HOSA students about dentistry, took alginate impressions of stone teeth, and also helped them pour the impressions in microstone. The students seemed to be really excited about the hands-on activity and our students educated them on dentistry as a profession!
International Outreach MN ASDA members teamed up with Mission Save A Smile to send DDS students to Achutupu, Panama over spring break 2016. Students flew to Panama City and then took a small rotor plane to the northern coast of Panama. Between the racing fees and four sponsors, including two new sponsors, we raised over $1490 that went toward investigating ways to detect oral cancer earlier. Following the event, the Clinical Explorations Committee hosted a Lunch N’ Learn on oral cancer where we present the check donation to Dr. Rhodus, who is a board member of the Oral Cancer Foundation and pivotal in oral cancer research and advocacy in our community! Another great aspect to this event is faculty participation! Pictured above (L-R) are Dr. Hildebrandt, Dr. Rhodus, Dr. Thierer, and Dr. Madden
The second annual One Smile Gala, hosted by the MDA’s philanthropic arm the Minnesota Dental Foundation, was held on October 7, 2016. Dental Entrepreneurship Committee - Summer BBQ NEW! In its first semester as a new MN ASDA committee there has been a lot of interest, growth, and has created lofty goals as we became a more active committee within MN ASDA. We introduced the committee with a well-attended Lunch N’ Learn with local entrepreneur Tyler Quinn. He spoke on entrepreneurship as a whole, described his own journey with Alchemy, and connected relevant insights to dentistry. This event was well received and very motivating for those who are interested in running their own practice in the future. Moving forward into the new year we will have a practicing dentist with multiple offices come and talk about how to manage patients, employees, and the business of multiple practices effectively. Also, we are bringing in a professional who deals with transitioning and new practice start-up to help educate our members about how to effectively begin our careers in dentistry. Grill master Eric Christenson mans the grill on a beautiful, hot summer day! Minnesotans really love being outdoors when we can!
The 21st Annual MN ASDA Vendor Fair was another successful year! We utilized the spacious DQ Club room of TCF Bank Stadium for the third year in a row, filling to capacity with approximately 70 vendors and nearly 300 students. Relationships with the Minnesota Dental Association, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and the larger U of MN institution allowed us to keep building room rental expenses low. Overall, the Vendor Fair brought in a gross revenue of $24,025 with $12,583 in total expenses, Net income of $11,442 – a 60% increase in profits from two years ago! Red, White, and Brew On March 3, 2016, the ASDA Advocacy Committee hosted the 2nd annual “Red, White, and Brew” event at the Northgate Brewery in Minneapolis. This was a excellent get together in advance of National Lobby Day. The event was an excellent opportunity for students to get involved with lobbying and learn about relevant legislation. Carmelo Cinqueonce, the MDA Executive Director, gave an introduction on lobbying and an update on current legislation. He along with MDA President Peter Cannon provided insight on the topics, individual conversation, and answered questions. This year we also hosted a fall version of the event just with students and at a closer brewery in conjugation with Advocacy Month! The MDA choose not to have a large scale MN Dental Day at the capitol this year given the nature of the legislative session and the construction. We had a Lunch N’ Learn with Legislative Coordinator of the MN DENT PAC so students would still be informed on the issues. We are excited to be back on the Capitol steps in 2017!
