ABC Reading Riot for First and Second Grade Grades 1 and 2 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Place: Library, GCDS Lower School Cost: $500 (Includes Thursday night dinner and breakfast the next morning.) Come one, come all. Announcing an exciting workshop for young readers. Join us for a week of reading, writing, and cre- ative crafts! • Mystery reader each day. • Large and small group reading. • Creative writing exercises. • Crafts and projects to reinforce daily stories. PJs, Popcorn, and Pizza—Thursday night will feature a sleep- over in the Lower School Library. Outdoor games, a treasure hunt, Bingo, movie, and mystery bedtime readers will keep you entertained all evening. We will dismiss at 9 a.m. on Friday after breakfast. You won’t want to miss this great week of fun. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Enrollment limited. Faculty Michele Jackson has been a first grade teacher at GCDS for over thirty-five years. Jennifer Krayewski is the Lower School Library Media Spe- cialist and Technology Teacher. She has taught in the Lower School media center for over ten years and also has eight years of experience as a graphic designer. About F-U-N! Ne w ! Grades Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten (current grade placement ’12–’13; must be 4 years old by June 2013) Dates: June 17–20 (no camp on Friday) Time: Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Thursday evening, 5 p.m.– 6 p.m. Place: Mrs. Sugrue’s Room, Lower School Cost: $450 (includes all supplies) About F-U-N! will live up to its name. There will be theme days, cooking, arts and crafts, stories, pool time/water play, music (maybe even dancing!). Come back Thursday evening (5 p.m.– 6 p.m.) for a scavenger hunt and movie! What an ending! Campers should bring: • tote bag • swimsuit and towel (or wear a bathing suit under your clothes and bring undies for changing) • lunch and a beverage Enrollment limited. Faculty Martha Sugrue, a master of fun, will lead the group. She is the director of GCDS pre-school activities and has been teaching pre-school and running summer camps for decades. 2 mini-camps
All-Star Baseball Camp Grades 2–3, Grades 4–6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 3:30 p.m.– 5:30 p.m. Place: GCDS Baseball Fields Cost: $250 Players will be divided into groups by age. GCDS baseball coach Tony Hasapis will be joined by sev- eral college coaches from Proswings to maximize your child’s instruction. Each day will begin with skill activities and end in a one-hour scrimmage. Players will have the opportunity to work on all areas of baseball. Each child will spend time in the batting cage and working on fielding and pitching skills. They will receive instruction in all areas of the game. There will be daily sessions for all positions. Players will also learn more complex aspects of the game such as base running, situational bunting, and cut-offs. All players are required to bring their own gloves. Balls and bats will be provided, although children may bring in their own if they choose. Faculty Tony Hasapis has worked at GCDS for seventeen years. He has coached baseball for all sixteen years. He also teaches social studies and works in the Middle School Physical Education Department. mini-camps 3
An Afternoon Tea Ne w ! Grades Kindergarten–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.– 3:30 p.m. Place: Miss Bayless’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Spend the afternoon with tea and scones . . . or freshly squeezed lemonade and chocolate chip cookies! Throughout the week, campers will bake, cook, sing, and read. They will decorate fancy hats and create beautiful table settings. They will also design invitations as the fruits of their labors will culminate with a Friday afternoon tea party! Each child may invite a guest. Hats or fascinators required! Around the World in Five Days! Grades Kindergarten–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Place: Miss Bayless’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Book an adventure with GCDS Travel and tour leader Laurie Bayless! Drawing on her own world travels, Miss Bayless will introduce the group to a bit of the history, geography, and cul- ture of Egypt, India, Ireland, Japan, and Mexico. Arts and crafts, music, cooking projects, and mapping will be included each day. A GCDS passport will be issued to all travelers. Don’t miss out! Make your reservation now! Snacks will be provided. Be a Rock Star Grades Pre-Kindergarten–Grade 4 Girls (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.–3 p.m. Place: Mrs. Mathes’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Have you ever wanted to learn the latest dances and songs? Join us for music, moves, and fun! Each day we’ll learn new rou- tines and tunes. We will take photographs and design rock star outfits! On our last day, we will put on a “Rock Star Show” for parents and friends. Join us for this exciting “rockin” time! Enrollment limited to 20 students. Faculty Head Rock Star Diva Tammy Mathes has been teaching for twenty-four years. She has a master’s in education and is a read- ing specialist. She also has studied curriculum design and devel- opment extensively at Teachers College at Columbia University. With three daughters and a musical husband, Mrs. Mathes can’t help but sing and dance all day long! 6 mini-camps
Books for Cooks Grades Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Place: Lower School Science Room Cost: $425 (Includes craft materials and lunch.) If you like stories, cooking, and creative art projects, then this mini-camp is for you! Each day we will integrate literature and theme-related art activities with fine cuisine. A watched pot never boils, so we will go out for some fresh air, only to return to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We eat our lunch in mini-camp. Daily Schedule: 9 a.m.–10:30 a.m. Story, cooking, art 10:30 a.m.–11 a.m. Outside 11 a.m.–12 noon Lunch Enrollment limited to 25 students. Faculty Sheila Belden has been teaching at GCDS for more than twenty-seven years at the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten level. Calling All Authors Grades 1–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Friday: Authors’ Party at 11 a.m. for parents and authors Place: Mrs. Mena’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Calling All Authors! The Lower School Publishing Center is open for one week—dream, imagine, create, retell! From an originally written story, proud, budding authors will create a self-published book by week’s end to be shared at a special Authors’ Party. Each child will write, edit, illustrate, and assemble his or her own book from scratch! Children of all writing levels are encouraged to participate— join us for a week of inspiration and learning. Daily activities will include reading, writing, crafts, and swimming. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Campers should bring: • swimsuit and towel • your enthusiasm and imagination! Enrollment limited. Faculty Betsy Mena is a reading specialist who has taught in the Lower School for nineteen years. Betsy established the Publishing Center in the Lower School in 1998. 8 mini-camps
Chess Camp: Pawns and Rooks Grades Kindergarten–Grade 6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Faculty Dates: June 17–21 Claudia Foster, currently a kindergarten teacher, has twenty-six Time: 1 p.m.–3:30 p.m. years of experience teaching in the GCDS Lower School. Claudia is also the director of Lower School the GCDS Lower Day Camp. Cost: $365 Want to learn more about the game of chess, improve your skills, and have a great time with friends? Chess Camp is for you. This year we are offering two levels to choose from: Pawns Players new to the game. Through stimulating group instruc- tion and plenty of supervised play, you will learn how each piece moves and how to checkmate your opponent. Important strate- gies such as pins, forks and discovered attacks will be taught to help you achieve this goal. Principal instructor: Tharin Chadwick (Dr. Chess) Rooks Players who have had some experience playing chess and want to improve their skills. Stimulating group instruction will start you off, and then you’ll begin some mini-tournament play with others in the group. Our master teachers will go over your moves and show you how to be even more successful next time. Guaranteed to keep you challenged! Create Your Own Amazing Spore Creature! Grades 2 and Up (current grade placement ’12–’13) Ne w ! Dates: June 17–21 Time: Morning Session 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Afternoon Session 1 p.m.– 3:30 p.m. Place: Upper School Graphics Room Cost: $375 How would you like to create your own Amazing Creature? Using the program SPORE, you will construct a creature step by step. Then, choose your own adventure story and mini-video, bringing your creature to life! You get to be the creator of a fantasy world filled with unique creatures. So, bring your imagi- nation, creative ideas, and storytelling instincts. In one week, you will learn to create a hero, a villain or lovable monster, and develop adventurous storylines. Sound fun? Please join us! Snacks will be provided. Faculty Kathy Davis has been teaching Middle School and Upper School print shop and graphic arts at GCDS for 13 years. Prior to her teaching career, Mrs. Davis was a graphic designer with Hilary Bunger Associates providing product labels, brochures, and package design. She was art director at Texasgulf, Inc., and then graphics supervisor for GTE Corporate Graphics Depart- ment, creating logos, product development, and multimedia pre- sentations. She is a graduate of Marietta College with a degree in fine arts and arts education. 10 mini-camps
GCDS Lacrosse Academy for Boys & Girls Grades 3–5 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 New! Time: 3 p.m.–5 p.m. Place: Drop off and pick up in front of the Alumni Gym Cost: $250 GCDS Lacrosse Academy is designed to teach and develop the John Collett is currently in his second year as a third grade skills used in lacrosse through new and exciting games, drills, co-teacher and coach at GCDS. Prior to Tim’s position at GCDS and CP LAX, he was the head coach at St. Luke’s School, where he coached the girls varsity team to their first-ever FAA Championship Game and a top Class C New England ranking. Tim played at Eastern University, where he graduated in 2004. He had a brief stint as a graduate assistant for the team before he went on to receive his master’s degree in physical education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Greenwich Country Day Soccer Camp II Grades 3–5 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Ne w ! Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Place: Drop off and pick up in front of the Alumni Gym Cost: $250 The goal of Greenwich Country Day Soccer Camp is for camp- ers to learn and develop the basic skills in all facets of soccer while having fun! Each session will focus on a specific skill necessary for making your child a complete soccer player. The campers will learn introductory and advanced techniques for dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending, and they will discuss decision-making strategies for game scenarios. Players of all levels of experience are welcome! Each session will incorporate exciting games, direct instruction, and a scrimmage in which campers will apply what they have learned. Coach Pestotnik is eager to work with your children in improving their soccer skills while having an amazing time. This is the perfect way to kick off the summer! Campers should bring: • water bottle • soccer cleats and sneakers • shin guards • swimsuit and towel Faculty Allan Pestotnik is in his fourth year at GCDS and is currently a fourth grade homeroom teacher. He received his master’s degree in education from Teachers College, Columbia Univer- sity, in May 2012. He has coached the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys soccer teams at GCDS and has experience leading various skill-based soccer camps in his home state of Ohio. A lifelong soccer player and fan of the game, he most recently played competitively as a member of Denison University’s var- sity soccer team. Questions? Grilling with Mr. Ledee Ne w ! Grades 3–6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: Morning Session 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Afternoon Session 1 p.m.– 3 p.m. Place: Drop off Middle School playground Pick up in front of Middle School Cost: $400 Calling all Grillers! Do you love to create new ideas? Do you love to eat? If you do, this is the camp for you! Your child will learn to create new meals while cooking on the grill. Some of the items we will grill this summer are: Grilled pizza Plum and peach jams over grilled biscuits Grilled fruit Kabobs Pancakes Stuffed French toast The ideas are endless! So if you would like to learn to grill or just want to enjoy some great food then this is the camp for you! He loves playing and coaching sports. Mr. Ledee has a passion for food and cooking and would love to share his recipes. 14 mini-camps
Hair Accessory Heaven Grades 1–6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.–3:15 p.m. Place: Mrs. Boruchin’s Room, Lower School Cost: $325 Calling all girls! If you love to style your hair, this is the mini- camp for you! Learn how to construct, design, and decorate your favorite sort of hair elastics, clips, and headbands in a one-of-a-kind way. Using a wide range of ribbon, trim, but- tons, wood shapes, fabric, and more we will create a different hair accessory each day! You will use a combination of mea- surement, fine-motor skills, and artistic imagination to com- plete your look. We will also learn and practice how to braid and accessorize each other’s hair too! Snacks, beverages, and all materials will be provided. Campers should bring: • swimsuit and towel Enrollment limited to 12 students. Faculty Nicole Boruchin teaches kindergarten in the Lower School. She is also a big fan of fun and unique hair accessories. Her love of fashion, fabric, and accessories inspired her to design and sell hair clips to small boutiques before starting her own handbag company in 2000. mini-camps 15
Hands-On Art Appreciation Grades Pre-Kindergarten–1 (current grade placement ’12–’13) New! Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Place: Lower School Art Room (downstairs) Cost: $ 400 (Includes art materials and an art snack) Art is all around us! Come explore the world of art. Meet famous artists and be introduced to their works as well as have an opportunity to work with your hands to create your own masterpieces. Each day we will meet famous artists who found ways to express themselves with different mediums (oils, water- colors, pastels, photography, collage). Snack, beverages, and all materials will be provided. Campers should bring: • a great imagination and willingness to get messy! Enrollment limited to 20 students. Faculty Leslea Walker has been teaching for 25 years. She has been teaching kindergarten and pre-kindergarten at GCDS for the past seven years. She was born with a paintbrush in her hand! Knit ’N Stitch: Knitting, Needlepoint, and Sachets Grades 2 and Up (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.–3:30 p.m. Place: Mrs. Mena’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Are you interested in learning a new craft or having time to practice a newly learned skill? During our afternoons together, we will learn basic knitting stitches that will culminate in a small finished project. If you already are an experienced knitter, you may choose from a variety of projects appropriate to your level to complete. We will also learn basic needlepoint stitches and complete a sampler. What we’ll do: knit ’n stitch and swim and laugh and have fun! Snacks and beverages will be provided. Campers should bring: • swimsuit and towel Enrollment limited. Lunch Bunch: Sign your camper up for a fun lunch break! Grades Nursery–Grade 4 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Place: Lower School Playground (Dining Hall during inclement weather) Cost: $80 Join us for lunch and some supervised play after your morning camp, before your afternoon camp, or between sessions. We will pick up your children from their morning camp and take them to their afternoon group, or you may drop off or pick them up yourself. Campers should bring a lunch. Faculty Lunch Bunch will be directed by Tony Hasapis. Tony has worked at GCDS for seventeen years. Make Music Magic Ne w ! Grades Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: Morning Session 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Afternoon Session 1 p.m.– 4 p.m. Place: Lower School Music Room Cost: $300 Make Music Magic is a brand new mini-camp offered this year by Hope Wittrock, aka, Country Day’s very own Miss Rocker. We will sing, dance, play the rhythm instruments, play the xylo- phones and metalophones, study the life and music of Mozart, and even manage a swim. This camp is designed for musicians entering the pre-k and kindergarten in the fall of 2013. Campers should bring: • swimsuit and towel Enrollment limited to 10 students (minimum 6 students) each session. Faculty Hope Wittrock has been teaching music in the Lower School for thirty-six years. She has directed hundreds of shows, concerts, plays, and musicals. She sings in the alumni choir at her alma mater, Concordia, NY, and serves on their Board of Regents. mini-camps 19

Students learn the prin- ciples of multitrack recording including techniques to record, edit, play back, store, and print out their musical creations. In this way they journey into the exciting world of electronic sounds while reinforcing basic computer skills. Open to all beginners. No previous computer or music back- ground required. Faculty Debra Lewis is Chair of the Department of Performing and Visual Arts at GCDS. Mrs. Lewis designed Country Day’s program in music technology in 1996, and her methods of introducing the subject at the elementary level have brought the School’s program to national prominence. Mrs. Lewis is profiled in the publication, Educational Technology: Best Practice from America’s Schools, and her programs have been featured in the magazines, School Music News and Music Educators Journal. She is a frequent clinician at music education conferences, and is a member of the New York State School Music Association’s Music Technology Committee. Mrs. Lewis began her teaching career at GCDS in 1973 as the school’s first band director. 20 mini-camps
One-of-a-Kind Bags Grades 1–6 (current grade placement’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Place: Mrs. Boruchin’s Room, Lower School Cost: $325 Interested in fashion and accessories? Like to carry a bag for your favorite things? Be the hippest fashionista with a bag of your own design! Learn how to make a one-of-a-kind bag from start to finish. This is a perfect combination of math and art. You will be provided with precut fabric of several styles from Mrs. Boruchin’s personal designs. We will learn how to measure and cut details, sew with a needle and thread, and use the sewing machine to complete your bag. A large variety of trims will be provided, like buttons and baubles, and other fun accents for you to use on your bag. Let the designing begin! If you have already done this camp before, rest assured the designs will be new and your learning will grow! Come on back! Snacks, beverages, and all materials will be provided. She has fourteen years of experience working in summer camp as a counselor, director, and healthcare professional. She holds a degree in early child- hood education and is the mother of two young children. Merritt Merritt has been a member of the GCDS community for twenty-two years working in the pre-school. She is currently a head pre-kindergarten teacher. She has worked at the GCDS Lower Camp, as well as the Upper Camp, as a counselor and supervisor. She holds a degree in elementary education, and her hobbies include photography and spending time with her four children and family in Vermont. 22 mini-camps
Outdoor Sports Camp Grades Kindergarten–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.–3 p.m. Place: GCDS Lower Fields Cost: $250 Come and join us for a week of sports. Activities include flag football, street hockey, whiffle ball, baseball, basketball, kickball, and swimming, to name a few. This program will meet the needs of all participants and is sure to be a blast! The focus will be on skill development, sportsmanship, and fun for all. Now is your chance to make your poetic dreams come true! Join the fun as we explore, read, illustrate and write poetry. From acrostic poems to found poems, you will be an expert at using the written word! On our last day, we will share our homemade poetry books in a special “Poetry Share” with parents and friends! A new topic will be introduced each day through stories and games followed by hands-on experiments and investigations. Come learn basic science facts and explore various scientific principles. Students will be encouraged to discover science in the natural world around them and will be given the opportunity to create their own experiments and investigations. During free play, campers will have the chance to play with science toys and investigate their own questions about the marvelous, natural world around them. Snacks and all materials will be provided. Science Camp II Grades 1–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.–3 p.m. Place: Lower School Science Room Cost: $425 Attention all scientists! If you enjoy investigating new things or just want to roll up your sleeves and get up to your elbows in science, come join us for a fun-filled week. Each day focuses on a new scientific topic that we will explore through experiments, stories, activities, and projects. Topics include natural science explorations, kitchen chemistry labs, and physical science activi- ties. The camp encourages children to question ideas and learn from their own observations and experiences. Campers will use a variety of equipment, tools, and toys that will enhance their experience. Campers leave at the end of the week with their own notebook of illustrations, ideas, and experiments. All materials, snacks, and beverages will be provided. Enrollment limited to 25 students. Faculty Sheila Belden has been teaching at GCDS for more than twenty-seven years. She has a general love for science and math, which are key components of her classroom curriculum. Sewing Camp 101: Intro to Fashion Sewing Basics Grades 4–9 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Place: Room 219 (Sewing Room), Upper School Cost: $395 (includes all sewing supplies) In the Sewing Basics boot camp, you will select and create your very own beautiful custom embroidered robe and pajama pants, embroidered duffle tote bag, or board shorts. The camp- ers will learn to operate the Brother computerized sewing and embroidery machine, safely use the iron, set grommets, design a two-piece sleepwear collection, sew hems, sew button holes, sew a drawstring waistband, and build on sewing machine precision skills. Sewing Camp 102: Introduction to Quilting Grades 4–9 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 12 p.m.–2:30 p.m. Place: Room 219 (Sewing Room), Upper School Cost: $395 (includes all sewing supplies) Design and create your own modern heirloom quilt or blan- ket for picnics! During this camp, you will stitch a quilt that celebrates your personal style and favorite memories. The techniques used to create the quilt will be geared toward novice level, and embellishment with embroidery, photo transfer, and machine felting can play a exciting role in the design of the quilt. It includes one medium embroidery, up to 4 photo-fabric transfers as needed, quilt batting, quilt top, border, and backing fabrics. Learn to create and hand-tie a quilt using the four basic quilting techniques. You supply the memories: favorite photo- graphs, favorite t-shirts, or anything else that can be stitched or appliquéd to your quilt and lots of fun! A great introduction to quilt-making. This camp is offered for more advanced campers who are competent with the introductory skills and are interested in designing a dress, beach cover-up, a matching tote bag, or hoodie sweatshirt and shorts. Learn and advance your sewing techniques such as sewing a dart, gather, insert a zipper, fit a pattern to your size, precision serging/overlocking, twin needle, and attaching ribbing. Create a fashion illustration, take your ideas from fashion illustration to final garment, gain an understanding of textiles appropriate to your project. Superhero Training New! Grades Kindergarten–3 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 1 p.m.– 3:30 p.m. Place: Barn Gym, Athletic Department Cost: $300 Climb like Spiderman and run like the Flash! This mini-camp will incorporate all that GCDS has to offer. Activities include but are not limited to rock climbing, swimming, games, and wrestling room activities. Campers will also have an opportunity to dress up as their favorite Superhero and live a day in the life of their favorite character. Camp will provide water and snacks. Each camper is required to wear sneakers, shorts and a T-shirt. Remember to also bring a swimsuit and towel for the pool! Snacks and water will be provided. Grades Nursery–6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: Morning Session: 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Afternoon Session: 12:30 p.m.–3 p.m. Place: Tennis Courts Cost: $400 Tennis is the sport of a lifetime. The skills and mechanics devel- oped through playing tennis help to reinforce those of every other sport. This comprehensive tennis program will meet the needs of all participants from first-time players to more experienced competitors. Students will be grouped according to age and/or ability. Players will be immersed in learning the proper mechanics of shots, learning the rules and scoring system, experiencing match play in singles and doubles formats, and learning to apply different strategies. The main goal is to have fun and love the sport of tennis. Included in the program are ice cream parties, daily swimming breaks, wacky theme days, and prize give-aways. Faculty Marek Beck currently serves GCDS as the Director of Profes- sional Development and teaches on the sixth grade team. Mr. Beck is a certified tennis teaching professional. Prior to working as a head tennis pro at clubs in the area, he was ranked among the top five players in the East and top 100 players nationally for his age group. Prior to Tim’s position at GCDS and CP LAX, he was the head coach at St. Luke’s School, where he coached the girls varsity team to their first-ever FAA Championship Game and a top Class C New England ranking. Tim played at Eastern University, where he graduated in 2004. He had a brief stint as a graduate assistant for the team before he went on to receive his master’s degree in physical education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Writers’ Summer Workshop Grade 6 (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Place: Middle School Computer Lab Cost: $450 Since 1992, Shaun Kelly has been teaching incoming seventh grade students who have just graduated from the GCDS Middle School how to write from his unique perspective. The camp is a “sharpening skills” experience as well as an eye- opener to discovering one’s own voice as a writer. More than four hundred Country Day students have taken the course over the past twenty years. The course will cover: • Essay techniques • Expository writing • The purpose of a thesis paper • An introduction to the analytical essay format used in the Upper School • “Show—don’t tell” fiction • Poetry as a means of communication • Effective note-taking Snacks and beverages will be provided. Enrollment limited to 18 students. Faculty Shaun Kelly has been teaching for over thirty years, the last twenty-two at GCDS. Over the years, he has taught fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth grade English at GCDS as well as sixth grade social studies and eighth grade American history. He is the author of one book and several articles for such publications as The Boston Globe and Baseball America. Mr. Kelly’s 2004 emotive piece, “Win it For—What a World Championship Means to Generations of New Englanders,” was recently inducted into the Writers’ Section of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. 34 mini-camps

Writing to Read Grades Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten (current grade placement ’12–’13) Dates: June 17–21 Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Place: Mrs. Foster’s Room, Lower School Cost: $350 Do you love listening to great stories and making up your own? Then our Writing to Read Workshop is for you! What could be more fun than exploring the process of reading through your own writing—making your own language meaningful and memorable to you! We will read the stories you love to hear—classic literature, new favorites and poetry—and then use process writing and dictation to explore our reactions. We will illustrate our writing and immerse ourselves in creative projects, such as puppets, masks, choral reading, and dramatization in our own readers’ theater. Each child will leave with a portfolio of original work to read and cherish at home. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Faculty Claudia Foster offers twenty-six years of experience in the GCDS Lower School. She is also director of the GCDS Lower Day Camp. Her love of literature for young students and enthu- siasm for process writing are woven into each activity. She is mother to GCDS alum Meg and current eighth grader Henry. Joann Gray is in her seventh year as a member of the GCDS faculty. She works as Lower School permanent substitute and as the library assistant. She is the mother of two GCDS graduates, and worked on numerous committees and projects during the time her children were enrolled at Country Day. Mrs. Gray has worked with Mrs. Foster both in her classroom and for the past several summers, assisting with her arts and crafts and writing mini-camps.
