2020-2021 ISSUE FOUR DECEMBER Message from the Principal A growth mindset with creative problem-solving skills is necessary when facing the current pandemic. We have responded to the unexpected changes quickly in the past months by adjusting our pedagogies during the suspension of the face-to-face classes without affecting our students’ learning. House Event - 5 Days Of Christmas: Scavenger Hunt! From 7 to 11 Dec, an event called the “5 Days of Christmas: Scavenger Hunt” was held and planned by the Chardonnay Team. The Team initially thought of another idea for the December house competition but due to the pandemic, they had to resort to other options that the students could do virtually. When thinking of other competitions to hold, the Team immediately thought about the Christmas carol “The 12 Days of Christmas”. Thinking about the Christmas theme and also home-learning, they figured that they could do a scavenger hunt where the students and teachers hunt for common Christmas items that could be in their household. They spent a lot of time working on rules, drafting emails, making posters, just so the students could have some fun during the event because they knew that staying at home staring at a screen can get a bit boring. Once the event started, the Team watched students from both primary and secondary and even teachers participate in the event where students seemed to have fun doing the activity and taking a break from schoolwork. There were even some particular students who tried really hard to edit their photos to get into the Christmas spirit. The Team hopes that through this event, other students and teachers will be able to appreciate the little things Looking back at all the photos genuinely reminded the Chardonnay and those around them. They would like to thank Team that there are many things to be grateful for even if they are those that participated in the event as each and every stuck at home and can’t go out. It reminded them that they can find one of them contributed to gaining house points and happiness in spending time with their family and friends. There are they deeply encourage both students and teachers to a majority of photos that really reminded the Team of that and they participate in the next house competition! have selected a few that shouted “Christmas!” to honourably mention them.
2nd Zoom Coffee Morning 3&4 DECEMBER with Dr. Patrick LAM As the Coffee Morning sessions organized by LAPT were well received in October, Dr. Patrick LAM hosted the three Coffee Morning sessions again to help us build a closer rapport with our parents and create an interactive and self- help parent community. Parents were invited to attend the sessions corresponding to their language preference and child’s year group via Zoom on 3 and 4 Dec. During the 2nd Coffee Morning sessions, Dr. Patrick LAM shared our views on the further development of LA, and also responded to some questions or queries from parents or students. Parents also had an opportunity to engage in dialogue with Dr. LAM. We thank our parents for their support to the Coffee Morning sessions.
Meet Our Alumni Be Inspired to Pursue Their Own Dreams Editor: Mr. Kelvin YAU As a DSS school offering dual pathways for senior secondary students, we are convinced that whether it is IBDP or DSE that our students have chosen, they are still able to find their ways to pursue their own dreams and shape the future that they have planned for themselves. The encouraging stories of our alumni have proven that to be very true. These alumni do have one thing in common - they all can find their inspiration and turn their passion into their future plan.

9 DECEMBER Primary Activities Online Parents Information Seminar on Home Learning Arrangements We understand that parents may have concerns about students’ home learning arrangements during the period of face-to-face classes suspension. Hence, we have invited all primary parents to join an Online Parents Information Session on home learning arrangements on 9 Dec so as to let parents have a better picture of their child’s online learning programme. During the seminar, Mr. Neil JOHNSTONE, Ms. Julia ENG, Ms. Jody TAM and Ms. Ruoben HUANG addressed parents’ concerns raised in the questionnaire that was sent out for parents to fill in earlier and provided advice on supporting students’ learning. They also talked about “Lost Learning” and how global educators deal with the challenges of COVID-19.
14-15 Christmas Assembly for Primary DECEMBER Christmas celebrations looked very different for our classes this year. On the last day of 1st semester, Mr. Terrence CHUN and Mr. Obadiah HO from our Spiritual Growth Department created a Christmas Video for our students. The video featured a message of ‘peace’ from Dr. Patrick LAM. Dr. LAM shared the British and German soldiers who exchanged souvenirs and played football in World War I during the Christmas ceasefire. Mr. Neil JOHNSTONE also shared the message of ‘love’. He focussed on the gifts of the 3 wise men, and how they connected to today’s Christmas traditions. Mr. Terence and Mr. Obadiah made the events more festive and had some sharing about the Christmas messages. Our Christmas celebration finished off nicely with a prayer from Ms Noel HO. In the classes, students had a variety of fun activities. We look forward to times when we can celebrate in more traditional ways. Teachers had an online Christmas Zoom, we had a fancy dress competition, an electronic background contest and also a quiz. See if you can spot anyone you recognise! On behalf of the PYP leadership and staff team, we would like to wish you all the best in these trying times. Christmas is a time of family so whether they are near or far, enjoy and stay healthy.

15 DECEMBER Christmas Assembly for Secondary Even though students and teachers could not gather in the School Hall due to the pandemic, a special online Christmas Assembly was held for the very first time. After the homeroom teachers led a prayer, the celebration was kicked off by Dr. Patrick LAM’s Christmas Greetings. He shared with students that Christmas carries an important message - Jesus Christ has brought peace to us. The homeroom teachers then played a video that was prepared by the teachers and students for their classes. In the video, the thoughts on Christmas by the teachers and students were shared, which motivated students to think "What does Christmas mean to me?". Youth With A Mission (YWAM) also prepared a video to help students reflect on the meaning of life. At the end, students enjoyed a special Christmas music video produced by both primary and secondary teachers. Our teachers surely enjoyed dancing for our LA students!

The message of "peace" was illustrated by Dr. Patrick LAM who demonstrated the power of peace, that during World War I, two hostile armies came to a truce on Christmas and even exchanged gifts. Jesus is the Prince of peace and when we connect with Him, we can experience real peace. Christmas is always associated with love and gifts. Mr. Neil has put on a costume and explained the real meaning of exchanging gifts - to share love and care - in a middle east man image. Mr. Terrence and Mr. Obadiah showed us a video “Christmas, the Light of World” which gave us hope, because Emmanuel (God is with us). Secondary For secondary, the Christmas Assembly was broadcasted live via Zoom. Year 7 - 11 students joined at home while Year 12 students watched in their homeroom. The theme for this year's Christmas Assembly was "Real meaning of Christmas and Life". While we also had the Christmas message on peace by Dr. Patrick LAM and the special teachers MV as a gift to our students, two other videos and slides were presented to help our students reflect on "What does Christmas mean to you?" and "the meaning of Life". Youth With A Mission (YWAM) has prepared a video for us on "the meaning of life". The testimony and messages are so powerful that they make all of us think about one important question "Life". Questions like "what is my self-worth? Values? And the meaning of life?"; "what does a "meaningful life" mean to me?"; "do I feel empty or frustrated when I can't meet "the worldly standards"? When people keep telling me that "I'm not good enough"? Or will I feel depressed when "I don't have certain things"?", provoke meaningful and in-depth thoughts. Life itself is a very precious gift that God has given to us, and He wants us to live it to the full. That's the reason why Jesus has come! Only by connecting with Jesus that we'd have real peace and abundant life!
