Physical Health

• It’s easier to keep tabs on where you fall on this continuum in terms of Physical Health

• We tend to know when we are heading from the green zone to the red zone physically

But do you do the same “check in” with your mental health? If not, why not?

Mental Illness in Athletes
Usually observed as a change from their usual self (baseline) BUT…..

Sport can be a “safe haven” – where they can function well/hide their
emotional pain despite under-functioning in all other areas
We often don’t know the full story ~ often disguised as physical pain
(especially in certain cultures)

If you don’t ask, they won’t tell…

Underlying issues get exacerbated under pressure of competitions

Building Mental Muscles
Accepting and learning to work WITH emotion is key

We are not our thoughts and emotions

We can train our minds once we are aware

This is essential for best performance and recovery

Shame & Stigma:
                   Hidden Opponent
Look around you:
1 in 4 of us will experience mental
   illness
More than you know will have
   suicidal thoughts

Most of us have not been open
about our struggles because of
stigma and fear

Without naming it, it becomes a
“hidden opponent” that impacts
performance for our athletes

We have to Name it to Tame it
Stigma is about Fear
Fear of judgment and evaluation of self

Fear of loss of control (of info, identity)

Fear that info will be used against them

So let’s name this to tame it….
