Dear Parents / Carer, At Meethill Nursery, we aim to do our best to provide a safe, secure and happy environment in which we can help your child achieve their best. During the next year we look forward to getting to know you and your child. We hope this booklet will answer some of the questions you may have about Meethill Nursery. However, if you have any further questions or suggestions you wish to discuss, please speak to the Nursery staff. It is our aim for staff and Parents / Carers to work together to provide a happy and worthwhile nursery experience for every child. As your child is greatly influenced by your attitude, we will endeavour, with your assistance, to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding between yourself and the nursery. You are very welcome to become involved in the life of the nursery, as it will help to encourage your child if he/she sees you are interested in what he/she is doing. There will be opportunities to share ideas and find out the type of activities your child will be involved in during his/her time in nursery. If necessary, we will also make our information available in other languages Wishing you and your child a very happy time at Meethill Nursery, Lorna Noble Nursery Manager Depute Headteacher
About the Nursery The custom built unit was in use some ten years as a classroom before it was opened as a nursery in August 1987. At that time, it was the first pre-school nursery opened in Peterhead. We cater for children who live within the catchment area of the Peterhead Children’s Service Network. We currently have 80 nursery places, 40 in the morning and 40 in the afternoon (10 of which are for 2 year olds). Each class has 20 children and is staffed by Senior Early Years Practitioners and Early Years Practitioners. School Information Address: School Road Peterhead AB42 2BF Telephone Number: 01779 474920 Email: Meethill.sch@aberdeenshire.gov.uk Teacher: Mr John Black Depute Headteacher: Mrs Lorna Noble Depute Headteacher: Mrs Colette Fraser (Acting) Nursery staff: Mrs Isabel Stuart (Lead Early Years Practitioner) Mrs Marilyn Gordon (Lead Early Years Practitioner) Miss Kara Marshall (Early Years Practitioner) Mrs Susan Buchan (Early Years Practitioner) Mrs Caroline Weir (Early Years Practitioner) Mrs Jacqueline Turner (Early Years Practitioner) From time to time, we employ EYP to replace staff who are out of school for professional development activities or who are on sick leave. Whenever possible, parents will be informed of the replacement EYP in advance. Continuity of learning and teaching for pupils will always be a priority, with replacement staff making use of planned work and records. We accept placements for students from North East Scotland College. Whilst in nursery, these students will assist the staff in learning activities for the children in our nursery. Pupils from Peterhead Academy on work placements are also welcomed in our nursery. From time to time, the nursery will be visited by the dental hygienist, speech therapist, health visitor, etc.
Nursery Aims We aim to provide a high quality, nursery experience for your children, in line with the guidelines provided. The individuality of each child and the experiences they have gained from you, their first educators, will provide the basis of our teaching. From here we will try to build on, foster and encourage the all round, balanced development of each child in our care. Our school and nursery aims reflect the contents of the Aberdeenshire 3-18 and Early Years Curriculum Framework with quality assurance and self-evaluation based on the How Good is our Early Learning and Childcare 2016. Successful Learners We aim to: Provide a curriculum which offers balance and depth, includes personalisation and choice and which challenges, motivates and actively engages all children Provide a balance of interdisciplinary and discrete teaching and learning experiences in exciting contexts, including outdoor learning Promote creative and independent thinking, including opportunities to work collaboratively and independently Confident Individuals We aim to: Encourage our children to develop self respect, self awareness, independence and ambition in a safe and caring environment Equip our children with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle Help our children develop the confidence to communicate their own beliefs and views Encourage our children to develop life and work skills, including assessing risk Responsible Citizens We aim to: Encourage our children to show respect for others by developing their knowledge and understanding of the world, including different beliefs and cultural diversity Provide opportunities for our children to discuss and evaluate environmental, scientific and technological issues Encourage our children to develop understanding, appreciation and affection of their local area by learning in, about and through Aberdeenshire Help our children make informed choices and decisions Effective Contributors We aim to: Ensure our children can communicate effectively in a range of different settings Provide opportunities for our children to develop enterprising attitudes Encourage our children to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills in a range of contexts Help our children to develop team/partnership skills, encouraging them to take the initiative and lead and demonstrate flexibility when necessary
For our Two year old children in nursery we follow the national guidance entitled ‘Pre-Birth to Three’ Positive Outcomes for Scotland’s Children and Families. This highlights 4 key Principles: Rights of the child Relationships Responsive Care Respect What are the nursery hours? ATTENDANCE TIMES – AM You are asked to bring your child along between ..................... 8.45am – 9.00am And collect them between............................................................... 11.40am – 11.55am ATTENDANCE TIMES – PM You are asked to bring your child along between ..................... 12.20pm – 12.35pm And collect them between................................................................ 3.15pm – 3.30pm We will accommodate parents with children in primary from 3pm. Settling in to Nursery How quickly a child settles in to the nursery will depend on the individual child. The child’s happiness and security are always of prime concern to us. For this reason, parents / carers are welcome to stay during the settling in period. Once your child has settled in, we ask that you bring him / her to nursery at their session time. Please enter by the main door situated in Nursery garden and children must be collected by an adult and will not be given into the care of an older child. If your child has to be brought or collected by someone who is a stranger to us, we must be told in advance. When you are enrolling your child for nursery, if you state that no-one else should have contact or access, according to the children’s (Scotland Act) 1995, we have to see the written proof (e.g. a court order).
As the cloakrooms are actually situated within the nursery, this gives you the chance to be aware of the day’s activities. Please try to encourage your child by looking around and generally taking an interest in what you see. There is a waiting area for parents just inside the main entrance which you are welcome to use. This contains many items of interest for you in the form of booklets, posters, photographs etc. Please take time to look at them. The waiting area will also be used as a parent room to allow parents to come together socially and for any nursery fundraising to be discussed. Attendance Pre-school children attend nursery for either five morning or five afternoon sessions each week. Once you have enrolled your child, it is your responsibility to send him / her to nursery as regularly as possible. Parents should make every effort to ensure their child arrives on time. In order to gain full benefit from their time in nursery, children need to be well enough to attend. If you decide your child is not well enough, you should inform us by telephone by either 9.15am or by 1.45 pm, depending on whether he / she attends in the morning or afternoon. To ensure pupil safety, a member of the nursery staff or school office staff will contact parents / emergency contacts to enquire after any pupil whose parents have not phoned in to inform us of his / her absence. Noticeboard A white board is positioned in the waiting area. You will find various items of interest displayed including details of what is happening in the nursery every week. Other relevant documents about how we care for the children are also on display Child Protection Aberdeenshire Council requires that all schools provide the following statement in their school handbook/prospectus: Everyone has a responsibility to protect pupils from harm. School staff are in a unique position to contribute to the protection of pupils and must share concerns with appropriate colleagues and agencies. Each school has a Designated Officer appointed to be responsible for Child Protection matters. This person will have been specially trained to listen to concerns and act on them as necessary. Unless satisfied that a child has not been harmed or is not at risk of being harmed, the school must relay their concerns immediately to the social work service, to the police and/or to the Reporter. When this occurs, social work and the police will determine when and how the child’s parents/carers and other services are to be informed. All school staff have a copy of the school Child Protection Policy and are aware of Child Protection procedures. Should you wish to talk further about Child Protection and the safety of children please feel free to contact the Head Teacher
Home – Nursery Links Before your child is admitted, you will be asked to come along with him / her to see around the nursery and meet the staff. You will be asked to fill in with your child ‘All About Me’ sheet and for one of our home links your child will take home our ‘Who Do You see’ book. Communication As the nursery follows the school year, you will regularly receive copies of newsletters, giving information on holiday dates, school and nursery events, Parent Council activities etc. There is also a school and nursery website that is regularly updated and can be found at www.meethill.aberdeenshire.sch.uk Parent Helpers and Volunteers Parent involvement in the life of the nursery is encouraged, welcomed and valued at Meethill School. We believe that parental involvement brings benefits to pupils, parents and staff and that it helps to build a positive school ethos. Pupils benefit from the skills and interests that parents have to offer; parents increase their awareness and understanding of pupil learning in nursery; and teachers benefit from support from other adults in providing quality experiences for pupils. Parents are welcome to help with a variety of tasks e.g. art and craft activities, going to the school hall for Physical Education, coming on school visits etc. The Parent Council also welcomes help from parents in its activities. Please contact the school if you would like to help in any way. Please remember that any adult helpers are in a position of trust when helping in school, where confidentiality is of paramount importance. Parents who would like to help must complete a PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) form. These are available from the school office.
Important Notes for Parents Please keep the school up to date with your telephone number, including your mobile phone number if you have one, and other details for emergency contacts. Inform the school or pre-school of any prearranged absence, e.g. attendance at a hospital appointment or other unavoidable event, prior to the absence taking place. Respond promptly to contact from the nursery. Snack There is a charge of 50p per session (£2.50 a week) for snack. This is paid termly. A light snack consisting of a drink and something small to eat is given daily. The children are fully involved in choosing and preparing of the snack and laying and clearing the table. We follow the NHS ‘Setting the Table’ Guidelines. We vary the menu to allow your child the opportunity to sample different tastes and experience some aspects of a multi-cultural diet. It is important to encourage good eating habits in young children and as we are a “Health Promoting” School, much thought is given to planning healthy snacks. If your child has any dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can plan for him/her. We provide a birthday cake on a child’s birthday, and we ask that you do not hand in any sweets etc. for distribution, as all foods have to be sourced by staff. Our more detailed snack policy is available on the nursery noticeboard. Tooth brushing Childsmile provide a toothbrush and paste to encourage your child to brush his/her teeth after they have had their snack in Nursery. Members of the Childsmile team will visit Nursery to carry out presentations to the children about the importance of brushing and how to brush correctly. Clothing Children should wear comfortable play clothes, which they can easily manage by themselves. Please remember that braces and belts can be difficult to cope with when children are desperate for the toilet. If they are to be outside in sunny weather they should be provided with a suitable covering for their heads. Should sun-cream be necessary, it should be applied before your child comes to nursery. In addition, we have a supply of outdoor clothing and Wellington boots for outdoor play, either in our own outdoor area or during our Forest Kindergarten in Meethill Park.
Learning Visits During their time at nursery, your child will have the opportunity to take part in visits to local places of interest which relate to a ‘context’ being studied in class or which are of relevance to their education and development. Parents are required to sign a consent in their application form granting permission for their child to go on a visit and will be notified of the details and requirements for the visit in advance. Risk assessments will be carried out in advance of any visit. School Council & Fundraising Group Meethill School Parent Council was formed in October 2008 and is actively involved in the work of the school. As well as organising social events, the Parent Council also raise funds for the purchase of items and the funding of trips which the school would otherwise find hard to cover from its Per Capita Allowance or School Fund. All parents are members of the Parent Forum and the Parent Council includes parents, teaching and non-teaching staff. Current Office Bearers: School Council Chairperson – Mrs Sarah Mathieson Vice Chairperson - vacant Secretary - Mrs Bridie Whyte Treasurer – Mrs Margaret Morgan Fundraising Group Chairperson – Mrs Fiona Slocombe Vice Charperson – Lynn Mackay Secretary - Jenna Donaldson Treasurer – Mrs Lorna Cruickshank Emergency Closure / Adverse Weather Procedures At the beginning of each session, parents are asked to provide or update names and addresses of emergency contacts / storm addresses so that they can be contacted quickly at times of emergency closure. This may be due to heating or water failure or adverse weather. If a pupil needs to be sent home for any reason, parents will be contacted in the first instance, followed by the emergency contact, if parents are not available. If we do have advance knowledge of a school closure, parents will be notified by a newsletter. At other times, parents can use any one of the following options to acquire information.
1. The Telephone Information Service The Telephone Information Service is a schools’ information line, which is used to inform parents of school closures. Parents can listen to a recorded message by the Head Teacher. Although the information line has been enhanced over the years, it is not able to cope with all parents and staff phoning at the same time and if you leave your phone on re-dial, this only makes the line busier. To access the Telephone Information Service: Dial Aberdeenshire Council’s access number – 0870 054 4999 Now enter your school’s pin number – 02 2200 You will now hear the school’s name. Ensure that this is correct before going on. You will now be taken to the main menu – press 1 to hear your school’s message. Press 4 to enter the Pin Number for another school within the authority. As you may have children attending different schools this will enable you to move from one school’s messaging service to another. Therefore listed below are the pin numbers of other schools within the town. 2. Aberdeenshire Council Website This website gives information on school closures in this area. The website address is www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk. If you click on ‘School Closures’ you will be shown a list of schools with a note of their closure status. 3. Local Radio Radio Stations are automatically told of a school closure when the school has entered the details on the website and a list of schools that are closed or partially closed is broadcast to listeners as part of their ongoing news service. Details for radio stations are as follows: Northsound 1 FM 96.9 Northsound 2 MW 1035kHz Waves Radio FM 101.2 BBC Radio Scotland FM 92.4 – 94.7 5. Text Message When possible, office staff can send a text message to parents from the school computer system. Partnership Working with Other Agencies We liaise on a regular basis with a range of agencies e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, Health Visitor, Educational Psychologist etc. in order to provide continued support for children and their families. Accident Insurance No insurance cover is held by the Local Authority to provide automatic compensation to pupils in the event of a personal accident or death. It is for you, as parents, to decide whether you wish to insure
your child as appropriate. The Local Authority does hold Third Party Liability Insurance which indemnifies the Local Authority from claims from third parties (e.g. parents of pupils) who have suffered injury, illness, loss or damage arising from the negligence of the Local Authority or its employees. However, if there is no negligence, no claim would be accepted by the Local Authority. This is brought to your attention in order that you may take the steps you consider best for you and your children. Promoting Positive Behaviour Children are strongly encouraged to behave in a courteous manner towards each other; move around the nursery in an orderly way; respect the feelings and possessions of each other and generally to conduct themselves as thoughtful, caring members of society. As I trust these reflect your own, as well as our principles, by co-operation we can strive for a common goal. Whenever possible, we operate a policy of encouraging positive behaviour by giving lots of praise, encouragement, reassurance and support. Children decide on nursery rules and posters are displayed around the setting. Photographs Ipads are used in Nursery to take photographs of Nursery activities, events and outings. These photographs are used to record progress and to share our curriculum with parents/carers. You will be asked to sign consent in your application form to allow us to photograph your child. Parents should be careful about uploading photographs etc. on social networking sites, making sure that photographs are cropped so that only their own child / children are visible. Parental Permission Before your child enters the nursery, we will also request your permission to allow staff to change his / her clothing in an emergency and to check his / her hair should there be an outbreak of head lice within the class. You will also be asked to sign an Internet User Permission form to allow your child to use the internet under adult supervision, within the Nursery/School setting.
Transition into Primary 1 We prepare children for their transition into Primary 1 as part of their nursery experience. Children join the classes in school for assemblies and special events throughout the year. Additional opportunities for children to visit the school and Primary 1 class are planned throughout the year and children currently in Primary 1 also visit the nursery. Our aim is to ensure children have a seamless transition into school and Primary 1. Details about Enrolment to Primary 1 are advertised in the local press by Aberdeenshire Education and Recreation. This information is also posted in the Nursery and included in our School Newsletter. We hold a series of workshops for Parents/Carers in the summer term before your child enters Primary 1 and in the autumn term, once your child has started school. Multi-Culture and Anti-Racism We will at all times provide a curriculum which pays attention to each individual’s religious beliefs, culture, race and class, in accordance with the Authority’s stated policies. Lending Library To encourage an interest in books and reading we have a lending library from which you and your child will hopefully borrow books to read together at home. The books may be changed as often as you wish. Curriculum for Excellence 'Curriculum for Excellence has been introduced across Scotland for all 3-18 year olds – wherever they learn. Its purpose is to improve our children’s life chances, to nurture successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens, with the child or young person at the centre of the learning. Our aims for Curriculum for Excellence have been set out in A Curriculum Framework 3-18 for Aberdeenshire 2015. This policy gives clear guidance to schools on the planning and delivery of a more meaningful set of experiences and entitlements that will prepare Aberdeenshire learners for 21st century Scotland, including access to new technologies to support creativity and learning.
At Meethill Nursery we aim to provide a safe, happy, stimulating environment where your child will learn through play experiences. The Nursery Staff will observe and interact with your child and will plan activities to meet and develop your child’s needs. We hope that your child will become independent, confident, able to co-operate with adults and other children. Through a variety of activities your child will be encouraged to find out more about themselves, be inquisitive about the world around them and to be thoughtful and caring. Curriculum for Excellence is for all young people, in all educational settings and it should support them in a range of ways which help to maximise their potential. At its heart lies the aspiration that all pupils and young people should develop their capacities as: successful learners with enthusiasm and motivation for learning, determination to reach high standards of achievement and openness to new thinking and ideas confident individuals with self respect, a sense of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, secure values and beliefs and ambition responsible citizens with respect for others, commitment to participate in political, economic, social and cultural life effective contributors with an enterprising attitude, resilience and self-reliance Within Curriculum for Excellence, Nursery Schools will develop curriculum learning activities within the Early Level. The learning activities are designed to meet the learning needs of pupils in pre-school education and Primary 1 and will include active play, both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor play is crucial to the development of children’s skills and knowledge. We have outdoor clothing and boots for children to wear to allow them to experience outdoor learning throughout the year, either in our own outdoor area or during our Forest Kindergarten sessions at Meethill Park.
Through these activities the children find out about materials, use and develop language, make friends and learn to share and take turns. Foundations are being laid for Literacy and Numeracy. Young children learn through play and enjoy learning. This prepares them well for school. We also focus on key aspects of Health and Well-being throughout our nursery experiences and encourage children to make informed choices. We aim to provide opportunities for your child to develop in many ways. All the activities provided at Nursery have an educational purpose for children of pre-school years. For the most part of the session your child will choose from a range of activities and will be encouraged to take part in a wide variety of activities and experiences in order to promote his / her development and learning. Your child’s active involvement in activities is based on research which shows that young children benefit from being active learners (doing) rather than being passive learners (being told). Children will call learning “play” and that is what it will be – purposeful play. Children have regular access to books, stories, a drawing/writing table with a selection of tools and paper, mathematical games, number rhymes, songs and poems. By the provision of a wide variety of activities the children will have good opportunity to widen their learning through discovering about maths, science and the environment. A more directed period of time takes place towards the end of the session when children are gathered for stories, songs, poetry, news, discussion etc. in a larger group. Occasionally it may be necessary to gather at other times or be part of a group for baking, snack preparation or table games. We include the wider community in children’s learning and this involves visits to the local shops, library, church, play park, beach etc. We also welcome visits from the Road Safety Officer, Policeman, Vet, Nurse etc. to allow children to become familiar with the roles people play in the local community. Assessment and Achievements Throughout his/her time at nursery your child will be continually assessed to ensure that he/she is developing to his/her potential. Observations and assessment details will be recorded in your child’s personal profile folder. Parents are welcome to view the folder at any time with their child. Parents’ comments are also greatly valued. Regular ‘Stay and Play’ sessions are arranged and these provide opportunities for parents to see their child’s folder and chat about their child’s next steps in their learning. Parents are most welcome to discuss their child’s progress with the staff any time they feel there is a need. If your child has achieved an award in dancing, swimming, etc. we would also be happy to share the information with our nursery. Their achievements will also be recorded in their profile.
Health and Safety Emergency Contact An emergency contact is required should your child become ill, or the school needs to contact someone in an emergency and the parent cannot be contacted. The emergency contact should be someone known to the child and live reasonably close to the school, no more than 10 minutes away. Accidents and First-Aid Only minor cuts or abrasions can be treated in nursery and it is our policy to seek professional advice when an injury appears to be more serious. On such occasions, parents will be informed, or the emergency contact, if parents are unavailable. At all times, staff will act in the best interests of the child. A record of accidents is kept on the premises and a slip issued to parents detailing any first aid treatment administered. Medication Parents are responsible for supplying information about medicines their child needs to take at nursery and of informing us of any changes to the prescription. Parents are requested to complete the relevant forms in relation to Aberdeenshire Council’s policy on Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs. It should be noted that no medication can be administered by the school to a pupil under 16 without the parent’s written consent. Form 1: Request for Nursery Staff to Administer Medication This form is for parents to complete if they wish the school to administer medication. The form provides information on pupil details, the medication and full directions for use as well as contact details. Please Note: There is no legal duty which requires school staff to administer medication; this is a voluntary role. Therefore, where possible, arrangements should be made for prescribed medicine to be administered by the parent in dose frequencies outside nursery hours.
Fire Drill A fire drill is practised once per term. In the unlikely event of the whole nursery and school site having to be evacuated, the nursery children will be accommodated at Dales Park Primary School. Security In response to concerns regarding security within schools, Aberdeenshire Council have introduced safety procedures for all visitors to the school. In order to know who is in the building and where they are, all visitors, specialist teachers, parents with appointments and tradesmen etc. in the premises will be issued with Visitors’ Badges. In addition to this, they will be required to sign themselves in and out in the visitors’ book. Parents/Guardians dropping off or collecting children will be exempt from this practice. All staff wear photo identity badges. Once all the children have arrived in the nursery, the inside doors are locked. However, there is a door bell which can be used for summoning staff. Road Safety Parents are to refrain from parking (even for an instant) on the zig-zag lines on School Road, immediately in front of the pedestrian entrances. They must not bring cars into the school car park as it is for staff use only. Please note parking on the pavements is also not permitted at any time. When crossing School Road, we also recommend you encourage your children to use the raised designated crossing points. To avoid unnecessary accidents, pedestrians i.e. pupils and adults, should at all times use the proper pedestrian entrances at School Road, Springbank and Orchard Grove. The vehicle entrance is not to be used by pedestrians. Immunisation Parents should ensure that their child is up to date with pre-school immunisations. Complaints Procedure If you are dissatisfied about a remark, an action or indeed have a complaint to make about a member of staff, we recommend the following procedure. In the first instance you should ask that person for clarification or explanation of the events concerning your grievance. In the interest of confidentiality for both parties, this should preferably be at a time and place where you will not be disturbed. If, however, you feel you cannot approach that person again, you should make an appointment with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, as soon as possible, to discuss the matter.
The Head Teacher will normally make an immediate oral acknowledgement of your complaint. On the other hand, if he feels he must discuss the matter with the member of staff concerned or indeed gather more relevant information, he will then respond orally, as soon as he can – either by telephone or after inviting you to come to school. This will happen within five working days and his response will also be confirmed in writing within that same period. If the grievance is still not settled at this stage, the Head Teacher will endeavour to resolve it within twenty-eight working days or you will be informed of the reasons for the delay and advised of the revised date. If it is not yet resolved, you should then contact , Quality Improvement Officer, Education Office, Buchan House, St Peters St, Peterhead AB42 1QF. If you still wish to take the matter on, you should then get in touch with the Care Inspectorate, Johnstone House, Rose Street, Aberdeen. Tel: 01224 793899. A record of complaints is kept in school. It may be shared with Aberdeenshire Council officials or officers of the Care Inspectorate. Otherwise it is confidential. How You Can Help Your Child You can help your child to learn by playing with them at home and by: Encouraging them to be independent, for example in getting dressed and washing their hands before meals, and to share and play with other children. Encouraging them to develop healthy habits in diet, exercise and hygiene. Reading to them every day, talking about books with them and reading familiar words to them, for example, the labels on their favourite foods.
Talking to them, answering questions and playing remembering games and guessing games like “I spy.” Helping them to match and sort things, for example, putting together forks and knives or cups and saucers, pairing up socks, sorting out big tins and little tins, putting packets in order of size. Encouraging them to count and use numbers in everyday situations and in Nursery Rhymes. Encouraging them to listen to music, songs, stories and rhymes. Encouraging them to express their ideas and feelings, for example, using crayons, pens, pencils, paint, music and play. Giving them the chance to use their fingers and hands, for example, building with bricks, cutting out with scissors, helping with baking and fastening zips and buttons. Talking about routines, days of the week, months of the year and events held in different seasons. This Meethill Nursery Prospectus is accurate as of September 2018.
