Fire Prevention 8th Annual and Control Fire Services Training Conference Course Decriptions BLOCK 1 – Choose one of the following three programs… March 27th, 8am to 10am 1A Turn Around Leadership This program is designed to discuss the concept of leaders, regardless of what their specific position is, needing to turn around and extend their hand to those under their command. This action will assist in enticing their subordinates to rise to the next level and reach their maximum potential, quite possibly as a future leader. Conversely, this concept has the effect of pushing the leader forward so as to fulfill their commitment to the organization. We will also look at the need for successful succession planning to ensure the future viability of the organization through a deliberate review of past, present, and future organizational behavioral concepts. 1B Preparing the Modern Engine Company The modern fire service encompasses a traditional foundation. Lessons learned through experience, scientific research, street-smart training and education, enhanced technology, and most importantly, blue-collar hard work. The engine companies of today must prepare for a dynamic enemy in hazardous battlespaces, doing so with limited resources. The goal of “Preparing the Modern Engine Company” is to deliver specific engine company concepts and tactics for firefighters, instructors, and company officers, so together we can be prepared to fight the enemy of today. 1C First Due Building Construction Determining the characteristics of a building in the early stages of an incident is a priority at every structure fire, regardless of rank or assignment. This program will include a brief review of building types followed by an in-depth discussion on how to determine a building’s materials, components, construction methods, and era. This program is beneficial for everyone, from the new firefighter to the chief officer, as safety is everyone’s concern.
BLOCK 2 – Choose one of the following three programs… March 27th, 10am to Noon 2A Setting Our Volunteers Up for Success Here’s your chance to “make’em or break’em”, and with volunteerism at an all-time low we can’t afford to “break’em”. This interactive discussion breaks down many of the struggles we face when attempting to truly connect with our volunteers. Believe it or not, setting them up on a path for success is our FIRST mission once they are voted in. Join us as we dive into tips and tricks on how to grow volunteer professionalism, recruitment and retention, mentorship, and much much more. Lead from the front, be the example! 2B Conducting Ground Ladder Inspections & Basic Maintenance Ground ladders are vital tools on the fireground and enhance safety during firefighting operations. Like all tools, ground ladders must be inspected and maintained to be ready for service. This presentation will review procedures for inspecting ground ladders and outlining what to look for. These inspections often lead to the identification of basic maintenance issues which can be dealt with inhouse utilizing just a few basic tools. We will look at some of these solutions to solving these issues complete with demonstrations. If you are one of the people in your department responsible for overseeing or performing maintenance on ground ladders, this program is for you. 2C Learned the Hard Way: Leadership Done Right Leaders have walked the earth in many forms for ages, leaders of great countries, leaders of great armies, and leaders of great fire departments. But how did they become great leaders? Easy! They made a ton of mistakes! The key to any mistake is to learn from it. But why should we have to make the same mistakes as those who have come before us? Wait! We don’t! This program will look at what others have learned the hard way and analyze how we can avoid making those same mistakes. From personnel and training to recruitment and retention, this program aims to help you on your path to becoming a great leader. BLOCK 3 – Choose one of the following three programs… March 27th, 1pm to 3pm 3A Transformational Leadership: How to Make the Change Is a strict management structure not working for you? Are you looking to become a leader that inspires others to follow you instead? This program will start by defining the difference between transactional and transformational leadership. We will look at historical leaders, which style they utilized, and how it affected history. We will discuss the characteristics and benefits of being a Transformational Leader and how that will benefit your team and your organization. Many times in the fire service our path to being a fire officer is defined by our environment and those around us. Attending this program and learning about transformational leadership will help you have more control over your path and the leader you will be. 3B We’ll Teach ’Em, YOU Train ’Em We all know what’s required when it comes to Emergency Medical Services, that’s the easy part, so let’s get down to the stuff that’s not required. You are done with EMT class, but now what? Is the CME program where training goes from here? Is there something more? Together we will discuss and experiment with some ideas for building your EMS training program. Not only will this get your members to the next level, but it will bring them together as a team. Whether you are fire based, or a standalone ambulance service, a solid EMS training program could be the difference between good and excellent. 3C NO LIMITS: How to Defeat Door Limiters & Chains Door limiters and chains don’t have to slow down your truck company. With these quick, professional, effective through the lock methods of forcible entry you can defeat the hotel door limiters and chains often found in dormitories, assisted living buildings, and apartments as well as hotels and motels. Truck operations isn’t just about brute force, its about understanding locks, having the right tools, and most of all, finesse.
