< Publisher’s Message A Salute to 100 Years; A Mother’s Love UC&D CONSTRUCTION IS OUR BUSINESS, En route to interviewing Randy and Brett Okland July 17 for an article I wrote on Okland Construction’s 100th Anniversary (page 44), I was listening to the Dan Patrick Show and former Cincinnati Reds great Johnny Bench was on. Patrick asked Bench about the pressure he put Utah Construction & Design Magazine on himself to succeed after being called up to the major leagues. 3047 W Parkway Blvd. STE A, “It wasn’t about me failing me, it was about failing the people back home,” Bench said. I thought that was an interesting response, and it Salt Lake City UT 84119 caused me to ask the Oklands what kind of ‘pressure’ they might feel O: (801) 747-9202 BUT WE MAKE IT living up to the Okland name, or serving as President of what is now a M: (801) 433-7541 billion-dollar-a-year construction empire with 730+ employees in three www.utahcdmag.com regional offices. Both men shrugged off the notion, saying it’s just a matter of getting up and putting in a solid effort, one day at a time. “We’re having to kind of pause just to realize that it’s 100 years,” said Brett, who took over Bradley H. Fullmer for Randy as President in December 2011 and along with brother Bill (CEO) represents the fourth Publisher/Managing Editor generation of Oklands to guide the company. “There is so much in motion, so many things we’re trying bfullmer@utahcdmag.com PERSONAL to accomplish. You stop and realize where you’ve been and some of the people who have helped you get there. The principles, the values, the vision – it’s just the same stuff we’re doing everyday.” Randy said the centennial birthday “really has a lot of meaning to me” and that his father and Ladd J. Marshall grandfather would be proud of the company’s success. Advertising Sales Director “It would be fun if Jack and John could come back for a week, even a day, and see what’s happened lmarshall@utahcdmag.com with what they created...what the toolbox on the bicycle turned into.” “They’d be amazed at the technology and innovations,” added Brett. “I don’t think they’d be that Jay Hartwell surprised to see where we are.” That last statement says a lot about the Okland family confidence, and it’s cool to see that ‘can- Art Director do’ mentality and how it winds its way down the various leadership levels, to where individuals take jhartwell@utahcdmag.com ‘ownership’ of their projects, or their portion of the project. I salute the Okland family on this notable milestone, along with the many talented people who work at Okland Construction. Congrats on 100 years! This middle-of-the-summer issue is typically our second-most popular of the year, as it includes our 2018 Top Utah General Contractors rankings (page 70). This year 23 firms participated in the survey (2017 revenues) – we appreciate their participation and encourage other firms to join the mix in future years. I hope our readers will check out our lead story in Industry News (page 16), which highlights the charitable efforts being done by my good friend, Lori Van Boerum Haglund, in honor of her son Brock’s memory. Lori created the BrockStrong Foundation (www.brockstrong.org) following his death in September 2012 due to complications from Crohn’s Disease. She organizes three events during the year – the 5K run, which was held June 9 at Wheeler Farm and generated $15,000, the BrockStrong Music Festival, held August 25 at the Haglund Family Ranch in Murray, and a Festival of Trees event in December. All proceeds go to provide music lessons “for kids who couldn’t otherwise afford them,” she says, carrying on her son’s genuine love of music. Major props Lori! It’s an inspiration to see people rally together for a good cause – we need more of that positivity in our world! Our cover story on the $214 million Bangerter Four Interchanges project (60) in Salt Lake County reveals one of the most complex – and definitely unique – transportation projects in recent memory. Converting SR-154/Bangerter Highway from a signalized intersection corridor to one with four new modern SPUIs required some innovative design and a JV construction team that has grinded on a 24/7 schedule the past year to hit every major milestone along the way, including the final interchange at Utah Construction & Design is published eight (8) times a year.
