         Welcome to Auction #25.

This auction is quite large and fills more than two U-Haul trailers. We are pleased to offer several
         specialized collections.

Earl Palmer collection of Anglo-Boer War
Earl Palmer, a noted Canadian philatelist, recently began collecting Canadian Contingent mate-
rial, covering a broad range of related postal history subjects from pre-war, to mails of the various
Contingents, Strathcona’s Horse, soldiers serving in irregular units, the post-war South African
Constabulary, patriotic covers, Wilson stationary patriotic postcards and covers and other military
topics. Many of the covers come from some of the noteworthy Canadian Contingent collections,
namely John Wannerton, Hank Burgers and William Robinson. I am indebted to Mr. Tony Davis
who lotted this section and added substantial background information to the descriptions.

The Pacific collection of Dr. George Vanner
Dr. Vanner’s collection focussed on the Oceanic and Pacific island areas, and required two trips
with a U-Haul trailer to pick it all up. There are hundreds of lots jammed packed with stamps,
FDCs, S/Ss etc, often in multiple quantities. Additional images are available on our website at

Besides extensive Canadian postal history and stamps, a feature of the sale is the Montreal Herald Newspaper
Receipt Book. An incredible newspaper receipt booklet from the Montreal Herald was discovered and this is the
first time it has been available on the market. It contains Large Queens to Numeral stamps including high value
         Jubilees.

Other items of interest include rare computer vended postage collection, a Cuba Baeza cancel cover collection, a
Greece collection, a C Force POW cover, China PRC including 1959 book with People’s Hero S/S, Foreign post
offices in Turkish Palestine collection and a ticket to Adolph Eichmann trial.

Please visit the website for additional images of larger lots at
Please send your questions and bid sheet as soon as possible.

         Sincerely,

         Bill Longley

The Earl Palmer Collection of Boer War Mail.
 1 D 1901 poster “A Soldier of the Queen” 17 3/8” x 22 3/4”, by London Printing & Litho Co, Lon- $500
don, Ontario, “Compliments of T. A. Muir & Co Druggists Telephone 83 New Westminster,
B.C.”, a calendar with metal bar and hook at top for hanging, metal bar at bottom, contem-
poraneous tears repaired with old paper. A rare surviving patriotic calendar from the Boer
War showing a young boy with the Canadian coat of arms, flags, roses and thistles (England
and Scotland). An extensive online search shows no other examples of this poster/calendar
recorded. The London Printing and Litho Company was formed in London, Ontario in 1890
and owned by Thomas Orr, and William Weld. A company history is available online and
notes they particularly operated a calendar business.
 2 D 1916 poster “Field-Marshall Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and of Broome Born June 24 1850 $300
Died June 5, 1916” (15 3/4” x 20”). Some edge wear and a few tears as expected, some older
tape repair at top and water stain at bottom, but still remarkably bright and in excellent condi-
tion, considering. This memorial poster shows Kitchener who served as Chief of Staff in the
2nd Boer War, later Commander in Chief of the Army in India, Consul General of Egypt, and
in 1914 Secretary of State for War. He was aboard HMS Hampshire en route to negotiations
with Tsar Nicholas II of Russia when his ship was sunk by a German mine off the coast of the
Orkneys. An incredible poster with deep, rich colours and very fresh appearance.
3 D Lord Kitchener silk Stevengraph, woven in silk with registration number 355800 and match- $350
ing number on back of original mat mounting board. Kitchener’s accomplishments are woven
into the design with “Egypt”, “1899-1900”, “South Africa”, “Soudan 1898” and titled “Kitch-
ener of Khartoum”. One of the top Stevengraphs available, in superb condition and a fabulous
frontispiece for an exhibit. Also accompanied by the same image in a real photo postcard,
          unused and pristine.
4 D 1902 poster “Surrender of Commandant Botha to Canadian Mounted Rifles” by Arthur Hid- $400
er. Toronto: Toronto Lithograph Company. (18” x 24”, on 1/8” thick paperboard). An amazing
chromolitho issued as a supplement to the Weekly Globe, 1902. Hider was a skilled artist with
spectacular depictions of the Boer War and horses. A collection of his work is held at Library
and Archives Canada, 2010-00043-9, Box 2000832240, as well as Toronto Public Library.

London bs transit (Ap 4) and red Windsor (AP 5). The business letter from Arthur Robertson to
Alexander Davidson reads in part “and that not having been acknowledge, some foul play in the
shape of robbing the mail may have been practised”. While the Postmaster General’s letter book
for the time does mention the occasional extraction of money from envelopes and lost letters,
most situations are resolved. There is no letter from Robertson to the PMG recorded in his letter
book reporting any loss (LAC RG 3 B.2.I, Vol. 366. T-3850). Perhaps he did eventually write?
