SLOW DOWN, ANIMALS AROUND: RACQ AND THE RESCUE COLLECTIVE RACQ and animal wellbeing advocates, The Rescue Collective, have joined forces to urge Queenslanders be aware of wildlife feeding near roads as it was peak season for collisions. New RACQ insurance crash data revealed more than 1,300 crashes involving animals were recorded during the month of September in the past three years. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said with border restrictions in place, many holidaymakers continued to opt for a Queensland road trip, which was great for the economy, but could be dangerous for wildlife. "We're right in the middle of the peak time for animal collisions, with our data showing June through to October are the worst months for these crashes," Ms Ross said. "In the past three years, this period saw RACQ members involved in more than 6,500 collisions with animals." The Rescue Collective Director Nicole Blums said there had been an earlier than normal start to animal trauma season this year. "Not only are we seeing animals being killed, but breeding season's also underway so they're on the move looking for food – that often means danger near roads," Ms Blums said. "We're calling on motorists to slow down and take care. If you do hit an animal and it survives, please stop and call your local wildlife rescue service to see if they can keep it alive or can be there to rescue any orphans." Ms Ross said there were several things drivers could do to avoid a collision with wildlife. "The data speaks for itself – if you're driving at dawn or dusk, you're more likely to have a crash with an animal because that's when they're feeding on the roadside. Avoid these times if you can, make sure you always stick to the speed limit, and stay aware of what's ahead." RACQ insurance claims data revealed 12,798 claims for collisions with animals in the three-year period from 1 July 2017. THE MOST STOLEN CARS IN QLD REVEALED The Holden Commodore has again topped the list as Queensland's most stolen car, after RACQ insurance claims data revealed thieves' top 10 most sought after models to steal. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said the insurer had received more than 3,000 stolen vehicle claims between 2017 and 2020, with the iconic Australian car at the top of the list for the second year in a row, and the Toyota Landcruiser the runner up. "It's clear the Commodore is a favourite with thieves, but Toyota is also a popular steal with their Landcruiser, Hilux, Corolla and Camry rounding out our top five most stolen car models," Ms Ross said. "This should act as a warning to Queensland drivers to ensure vehicle security is front of mind and that they're switched on to the tactics of car thieves no matter the brand or value of their car." Ms Ross said there were simple things car owners could do to avoid being targeted. "Our number one tip: treat your keys like cash, keeping them on you whenever possible. Avoid leaving them somewhere that's obvious or easily accessible to thieves, like the side table just inside your front door, because whether you're at home or not, that's the first place crooks will look," she said. "It's also important to be vigilant in locking your car and windows and, wherever possible, park in a secure garage or somewhere well-lit and well-populated. Thieves are less likely to target your vehicle if there is a chance they could get caught." RACQ's top 10 car makes/models stolen in Qld between 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2020: 1. Holden Commodore: 144 2. Toyota Landcruiser: 126 3. Toyota Hilux: 109 4. Toyota Corolla: 91 5. Toyota Camry: 89 6. Ford Falcon: 87 7. Nissan Navara: 76 8. Mazda 3: 74 9. Nissan Patrol: 70 10. IKEA CATALOGUE CELEBRATES ITS 70TH BIRTHDAY In its 70th edition, IKEA has evolved the iconic format of its catalogue into a 'how-to' problem solver for homes around the world. For the first time, this year’s IKEA Catalogue has been turned into a ‘how-to’ booklet full of problem-solving tips, hands-on ideas and practical advice in a response to a time where life at home has never been more important. Now more than ever, people are faced with the desire to create homes that suit their ever-changing needs and desires. As leaders in life at home, IKEA wants to provide Australians with the knowledge to make these big-impact changes by transforming the catalogue into a ‘how- to’ booklet. This dynamic version of the IKEA Catalogue 2021 is focused on small budgets and smaller spaces. Each page has been filled with “how to’s” on ways to make homes around the world cosier, smarter, more sustainable and more beautiful. “Life at home has never been more important as it is today. As we all spend more time at home, our spaces are working harder than ever before. For many of us, the reality of life at home means spaces and budgets that are shrinking in size. That’s why we’ve focused the solutions in this year’s catalogue on affordability and small space living”, says Christine Gough, Country Home Furnishing and Retail Design Manager for IKEA Australia. The IKEA Catalogue 2021 presents the importance of beautiful bathrooms, delicious kitchens and living and dining rooms you’ll fall in love with. In addition to these big impact changes, customers will also be offered practical tips such as mixing patterns, showing off your style and how to organise absolutely everything. Despite our lives at home changing, some of the solutions to grace the pages of the catalogue have continued for decades - like our highly loved BILLY bookcase, which continues to be a customer favourite more than 40 years on. What’s also stayed the same is our commitment to inspire people to live healthier and more sustainable lives. “We want to help people create a home that’s not only better for them, but better for the planet too – one water-saving tap and LED light bulb at a time”, says Christine. Each year, IKEA conducts in-depth research and home visits with people around the world. Through our research we’re able to find out people’s frustrations, dreams, hopes and desires for their homes. There are 6 different homes in this year’s catalogue, each representing a different living situation including a young couple in their first apartment, a growing family in a rental, and a money-savvy couple with two young children in a one-bedroom apartment. With a range of new products featured in the IKEA Catalogue 2021, customers can find the practical advice, solutions and advice for creating a smarter, more flexible, and better life at home. Customers can access the IKEA Catalogue 2021 online at www.ikea.com.au or collect a copy from their local IKEA Australia store from 1 September www.northlakesmessenger.com.au 12
