LHC BWS Electro-Mechanical Consolidation Project Meeting February 4th 2020 Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 1
Content • Status of Prototypes • Project Schedule • Spares • Future Work • Discussion Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 2
Status of Prototypes • Prototype #1 • Assembly done in December 2019 • Electromechanical tests done in December 2019 – January 2020 (see Jonathan’s presentation) • Vacuum acceptance test has been agreed with TE-VSC, planned for February 2020 • Prototype #2 • Components have been ordered for Prototype #1 and #2 • Assembly is under way (readiness 95%) – Morad, Jean • Vacuum acceptance tests will be done after Prototype #1 (if necessary) • Cabling to be done Do we install one or two beam wire scanners in the LHC in 2020? Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 3
Status of Prototypes: now in the BI Assembly Hall Thanks to Morad, Jonathan, Guillaume, Jean! Guides Bellows Front Plate Back Plate ConFlat Flange Wire Motor Hub Ball Screw Position measurement device Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 4
Project Schedule • No changes since last meeting • On schedule • Next steps are • Finalize second prototype • Adjust fork position to avoid clash with vacuum chamber • Perform vacuum acceptance test (1 or 2 instruments) • Install the instrument(s) in the LHC Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 5
Spares • We have 5 vacuum chambers, ready for installation • + One complete spare (old design) in 867 • Bellows state is unknown • Vacuum chamber can be replaced • This one can be prepared for installation • + Two complete sets of parts for 2 more spares (old design) • some commercial components need to be ordered (bearings, guides) • 2 more spares can be prepared for installation • + One or Two BWS currently installed (to be removed from the LHC) • Bellows state is known • To be seen whether they need replacement • 1 or 2 more spares can be prepared • Total: 4 or 5 spares (old design) can be prepared • In case we need one more prototype (new design), a new set of parts should be ordered • ~ 5000 CHF Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 6
Future Work • We have all-metal bellows-less prototype for fast linear scanners from UHVD • Test results (identical system in UHVD): • Total N of cycles: 350,000 • Shaft speed (rev/sec): 50 (corresponding to 1000 mm/sec with 20 mm ballscrew lead) • End position repeatability within 0.03 mm • Good support for the next BWS Upgrade: Front Plate Magnetically-coupled Back Plate actuator ConFlat Flange Wire Motor Hub Position measurement Ball Screw device Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 7

Project Status • Without supporting frame modification only the replacement of horizontally installed BWS is possible • It was decided not to modify the supporting frame (Meeting 28.05.2019) LHC-RA43 / C05L4 LHC-RA46 / C05R4 Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 11
Change Proposal – Interferometry Positioning Sensor Sensors’ supplier – Attocube (DE) M12/C7.6 Necessary mechanical changes: 1. Design and manufacturing of sensor head interface plate 2. Design and manufacturing of mirror 1 2 interface part 3. Modification of the hub (2 tapped holes) Questions: 1. Sensor head 1. Are we interested in integrating this 2. Mirror (5 mm/9 mm) sensor with prototypes? 2. Interfaces with control electronics? Other electronics, cables, optical fibers in the tunnel? 3. Budget Dmitry Gudkov, BE-BI-ML 12
