First Contact Physio Placements Dear all, We are looking to identify practice placements in conjunction with the University of Bradford for 18 First Contact Physios across West Yorkshire. These FCPs are all qualified Physios, working towards their Level 7 Advanced Practice in the discipline, with a specific accreditation for working in primary care. They are all currently employed in primary care, but require placements in alternative practices to increase their experience and be signed off against a set of agreed criteria – full details will be given to the host practices. We are targeting you as a practice with a recognised MSK service and/or known skilled practitioners in this field. Having an ANP or GP who specialises in MSK would be ideal so they can act as a Clinical Supervisor. Seeing and managing relevant patients is obviously crucial, but the sign off element is also about primary care consultation skills – doubt management, red flags, communication skills, appropriate sign-posting/onward referrals etc. A placement fee of £1,000 is payable for each placement offered. And if you can think of other colleagues and practices that may be suitable, please let us know. Each FCP requires 75 hours of placement time from 12th April until the end of August when all their hours and paperwork must be complete; 10 x full days is recommended, but this may be flexible to suit your practice. The day of the week is also flexible, arranged by you with your placement FCP. During their time with you, they will do a mixture of observing the Clinical Supervisor you allocate to them and running their own consultations under observation, with a 30 mins debrief at the end of each clinic or as you go along. As they progress through the weeks, they will need less supervision. Sign off after each session is very light-touch, with a recording of date, time and a pass/fail. After each debrief you will simply circle on a form to say if you have covered e.g. something on their PDP, Case-Based Discussion, Consultation Observation Tools etc. It is hoped that as you get into a regular slot, your practice will be able to triage patients on a specific theme (e.g. shoulder pain) and book them in for the next clinic the FCP will attend. You are also very welcome to use some of their time benefitting your practice e.g. in service evaluation and possible quality improvement audits. If you can please help with educating these practitioners and ensuring the programme with the university is a success we will be very grateful. There can then be further cohorts to train more FCPs to Level 7 for you then to employ through your ARRS funding to make a real impact in your practice and PCN. The new Roadmap for developing FCPs to true advanced level can be seen here, for interest: https://www.hee.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/documents/A%20Roadmap%20to%20Practice.pdf This demonstrates that they are clinically qualified to Advanced Practitioner Masters level; they need support and experience to attain this in Research, Education, and Management & Leadership, and also to adapt successfully to primary care. Please contact us at wy.traininghub@nhs.net by February 26th if you can help one of these physios by offering them a placement in your practice.
