YEAR IN REVIEW
The past year has been a challenging time for all of us, with the COVID-19 pandemic
forcing us to rely on new ways of teaching, working, and building community. We
have kept our distance from family and friends, and we have endured a looming
uncertainty about our livelihoods and, indeed, our very lives.

The LEDA Community has demonstrated incredible resilience, compassion, and
creativity as we banded together to face this crisis. The community spaces we
create have provided a way to reflect on a collective sense of loss, but also to
celebrate our hard-won successes.

We would like to share some of the highlights from an unprecedented year.

Executive Director
LEDA
                                        GORDON
In June 2020, LEDA welcomed Dr. Lamont Gordon as our new Executive Director. Lamont
came to LEDA with over 20 years of youth development and nonprofit leadership experience
at organizations including the Jackie Robinson Foundation, the Posse Foundation, and Brown
University. He quickly became ingrained in the fabric of our community – attending virtual events,
hosting a Leadership Chat series, and meeting with students and alumni.

Lamont’s leadership has helped LEDA successfully weather the most difficult parts of the
pandemic and served as an inspiration for us all. We are grateful for his contributions thus far and
excited to see how LEDA will continue to grow during his tenure.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMS...
LEDA’s 2020 Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute and Career Institute
both transitioned to a virtual model. The Summer Institute and Career Institute
staff rapidly and thoughtfully transformed programs known for their in-person
enrichment opportunities and community-building atmospheres into online
versions. They ensured that our LEDA Scholars and Career Fellows would have a
true LEDA experience while observing public health guidelines.

The community spirit of our Scholars, Fellows, and alumni was also a key factor
in the success of our virtual programs. Older students stepped up during the SI
to recreate the on-campus environment of past years that celebrates inclusion,
belonging, and self-expression, helping our newest Scholars connect with one
another and with the larger LEDA network. They also joined with LEDA alumni
during the Career Institute to mentor students in college on exploring career
options and to share their experiences as professionals from underrepresented
  backgrounds.

LEDA also developed a brand-new slate of online sessions to not only adapt to the
global pandemic, but also to respond to feedback on topics that would interest
our students. We worked closely with partners like Standard Chartered to offer
an updated set of virtual opportunities that gave Scholars and Fellows a chance
to learn more about specific industries, hone their job search, interviewing, and
networking stills, and have direct conversations with professionals in various
stages of their careers.

In addition, LEDA is preparing to launch a law school summit in June and a
medical school summit later in 2021 to help students interested in these highly
specialized fields.

CONTINUING LEDA’S
TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Despite the extraordinary hurdles to learning
created by the pandemic – and exacerbated
in under-resourced communities – LEDA
Scholars and Career Fellows once again
found outstanding success in pursuing their
educational goals.

98% of LEDA Cohort 16 Scholars were admitted
to at least one Barron’s “Most Competitive”
college, and nearly half of the Cohort was
awarded prestigious scholarships from
organizations including the Gates Foundation,
the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, the Horatio
Alger Association, and the Ron Brown Scholar
Program.

In addition, more than 200 Scholars and
Fellows graduate from college this spring, with            Narizza, Honolulu, HI;
at least 20 heading to graduate school, joining LEDA Cohort 12,
more than 75 current graduate students. Columbia University ’21

Congratulations to the high school and college Class of 2021! Your hard work
and perseverance in an unprecedented time are just two of the inspiring qualities
you demonstrate as young leaders!
