Preface

The GCMM is a major biennial international congress for widespread dissemination
of knowledge in manufacturing, management, production engineering, maintenance
predictive technologies and Industry 4.x. Recent events held in Australia (2018),
China (2016), India (2014), New Zealand (2012) and Thailand (2010) were highly
successful and attracted delegates from over 20 countries.
GCMM2021 was special, for it was the first time, this global congress was held
in Europe, in the UK, to celebrate the 30/31st anniversary of GCMM and to share
new attainments in research and industrial practice between academic scholars and
industry practitioners. This congress has always attracted high-quality research
papers and continues to serve as a central hub where the world’s knowledge of
manufacturing research is fused with industry strategy in a globalised market.
GCMM2021 continued this tradition, though held online, it attracted over 200
scholars and higher regarded professionals from academia and industry around the
world, USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Southeast Asia, Africa and
Europe. Regardless on the restrictive conditions imposed by the COVID,
GCMM2021 has attracted scholars from over 16 countries. It attracted an equal
number of male and female keynotes speakers that shared their experience with the
young researchers and the challenges faced by women in academia and engineer-
ing. A critical topic like “Women in engineering in academia: Are we there yet?”
was expounded by Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Queensland
University of Technology, Prof Anna Deletic, exploring the global challenge faced
by women in various areas of human activities.
GCMM2021 was organised and hosted jointly by Liverpool John Moores
University and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology along with its
ISPEM (Intelligent Systems for Production Engineering Maintenance).
GCMM2021 has received a good support from its sponsors, namely the Vellore
Institute of Technology (India), Zhengzhou University, Xi’ An university of
Science and Technology (China) and Liverpool John Moores University (UK).

                                                                               v
vi Preface

GCMM2021 benefited from the support of several associates: IAAST, (China), the
IET (UK), QUT (Australia), Ford Motors Company (Liverpool) and Kawasaki
(Liverpool) and Brunel University, UK.
GCMM operates within a broad range of manufacturing sciences and covered
five main streams, i.e. global manufacturing challenges, intelligent systems in
production engineering and maintenance, management of production process,
advances in materials and manufacturing and Industry 4.0, with, over forty topics.
However, this issue is a collection of technical and research papers dedicated to
intelligent methods in production engineering, providing new solutions for inno-
vative factories of the future, advances in production and maintenance from the
viewpoint of Industry 4.0. Therefore, this volume discusses the applications of
intelligent systems, methods and tools in production engineering, maintenance,
logistics, along with elements of information systems and product development.
This collection of new developments and advancement in intelligent control and
optimisation system for production engineering will serve as a good companion to
scholars, manufacturing companies, RTO to improve the efficiency of production
systems. It forms an excellent basis for the development of intelligent manufac-
turing system for Industry 4.0 digital and distributed manufacturing and factories
for future.
The papers presented in this volume were selected after meticulous review of
three independent and international reviews, the reviewers had no acquaintance
with the authors, and papers were sent to different countries avoiding the country of
its origin. All papers were scored, and the reviewers gave their levels of confidence.
In some doubtful cases such as borderline or contradicting reviews, and, where the
level of confidence of the reviewers was low, papers were resent to two additional
reviewers making a total of five reviews. With this stringent review process, over
sixty per cent of the submitted papers were rejected, and this ensured the quality
of the work presented here.
GCMM2021 organising committee scrutinised further all the papers and awar-
ded four prizes for the best technical papers, the best presenter and the best poster.
GCMM2021 expresses its deep gratitude to all Sponsors for their generous
financial contribution that help to run the conference online, to all the associates for
their support, to the keynote speakers for their time and the high quality of the
material presented and experience shared.
Special gratitude is expressed to Chancellor of VIT Honourable
Dr. Viswanathan, to Vice Chancellor of LJMU, Prof. Ian G Campbell and to
Pro-vice Chancellor of LJMU, Prof. Keith George, to the LJMU corporate
