 Welcome
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us will have
become more aware of the ways in which the law
can impact our lives. As we look at events happening
across the world, it feels more important than ever
to understand how the legal system works, where
injustices are taking place, and how the law might need
to develop to better respond to changes in our global
society.

Our Law list has a focus on justice and human rights,
exploring the way the law works to protect the things
that are most important to our society. We publish
authors whose experience and expertise puts them in
a unique position to examine weaknesses in the law,
authors who can shine a spotlight on injustice and put
forward compelling proposals for change in policy and
practice. We are actively seeking to commission work
which engages with contemporary sociolegal issues
and explores the way the law is responding, or failing to
respond, to everyday challenges in local
                 and global contexts.

If you have an idea for a new book that
fits with our approach and which you
would like to discuss, please contact our
                editor Becky Taylor

Bristol Studies in Law and Social Justice
Series Editors: Alan Bogg, University of Bristol and Virginia Mantouvalou, University College
London

Bristol Studies in Law and Social Justice explores the role of law in securing social justice in
society and the economy. The focus is on ‘social justice’ as a normative ideal and the law as a
critical tool in influencing (for good or for ill) the social structures that shape people’s lives.

This international series is designed to be inclusive of a wide range of methodologies and
disciplinary approaches. Contributions examine these issues from multiple legal perspectives,
including constitutional law, discrimination law, human rights, contract law, criminal law,
migration law, labour law, social welfare law, property law, international and supranational law.

The series has a broad jurisdictional coverage, including single-country and comparative studies,
as well as studies in international law.

Call for proposals
The editors welcome proposals for monographs of 60,000-80,000 words as well as proposals

Perspectives on Law and Access to Justice
Series Editors: Jess Mant and Daniel Newman, Cardiff University

The concept of ‘access to justice’ (the protection of the law that enables citizens to enforce their
rights) is far from new; however, it is often approached from a range of different perspectives,
methodologies and disciplines. This new series will provide a home for scholarship which
explores issues of access to justice. It will draw connections between research from different
disciplines of law, such as civil and criminal law, family law, housing law, immigration law and
social welfare law.

The series will forge a coherent field of access to justice scholarship; facilitating a multifaceted
critique of the key issues, and incorporating a diverse range of perspectives that will shape the
future directions of this emerging field.

Expressions of interest and proposal ideas are welcome.

Diverse Voices
Series Editors: Se-shauna Wheatle, Durham University and Jonathan Herring,
University of Oxford

As law faculties, academics and students increasingly realise that their reading lists are
‘pale, male and stale’, the Diverse Voices series gives readers an opportunity to hear
voices that have so often been silenced: the voices of black and minority-ethnic, women,
disabled, LGBTQI, working-class and neuro-atypical people.

Diverse Voices presents a groundbreaking new platform for debating and understanding
the impact of the law on different marginalised groups and critiquing the law from the
perspective of these groups.

Showing how diversification can enrich, embolden and energise the study of law, these
textbooks offer law academics and students a unique insight into the voices which have
too long been ignored by too many.

Justice in a Time of Austerity
Stories From a System in Crisis

Jon Robins, journalist and author and Daniel Newman, Cardiff
University

“A timely and vital exposé of the pressures exerted
upon our justice system by a decade of political
neglect, giving a much-needed voice to those who, as
a result, have found themselves cut off from justice.”

stark measure of a society without due process.”
MICHAEL MANSFIELD QC

How are poverty and social inequality entrenched through a failing
justice system? In this important book, Jon Robins and Daniel
Newman examine how the lives of people already struggling
with problems with their welfare benefits, jobs, housing and
immigration are made much harder by cuts to legal aid and the
failings of our creaking justice system.

Over the course of 12 months interviews were carried out on the
ground in a range of settings with people as they were caught up in
the justice system. The authors argue that a failure to access justice
all too often represents a catastrophic step in the life of the person
concerned and their family. This powerful, yet moving account
humanises the hostile political debates that surround legal aid and
reveals what access to justice really means in Austerity Britain.

Enemies of the People?

Joshua Rozenberg, Journalist and broadcaster

Do judges use the power of the state for the good of the nation?

were shocked to see themselves condemned as enemies of the
people.

This revolutionary work rethinks globalization as a
power system feeding from, and in competition with,
the state system. In illuminating how the concentration
of property rights within corporations led to the
rejection of democracy and to the rise in inequality,
Robé offers a clear pathway to a fairer and more
sustainable power system.

DEVYANI PRABHAT, UNIVERSITY OF

Thom Brooks combines first-hand knowledge of taking
the UK’s citizenship test and in-depth interviews with
key figures, to expose the test as ineffective and a barrier
to citizenship. With the launch of a new immigration
system post-Brexit, he offers recommendations for
transforming the UK’s citizenship text into a ‘bridge

“Timely and important. Three
detailed and persuasive case
studies show the challenges for
regulation and redress in this area.”
OLIVER BUTLER, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Exploring three different automated immigration
systems, this book identifies a pattern of risky
experimentation with automated systems in the Home
Office.

Assessing the consequences of automation, the book
argues that a precautionary approach is essential
to ensuring that society benefits from government
automation without exposing individuals to
unacceptable risks.

“Cyberflashing is a growing problem
that the law struggles to tackle - this
book details why that’s an issue for
all of us.”
SOPHIE GALLAGHER, THE INDEPENDENT

Cyberflashing has been on the rise since the start of
the COVID-19 pandemic. This book provides new
insight into the harms of cyberflashing. As the UK
government reviews its regulations, this unique study
considers recently adopted laws in the US, Singapore
and Scotland, and sets out proposals to criminalise
cyberflashing in English law.

“A must-read for every child rights
advocate who cares about youth
justice.”
NANCY E. DOWD, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

Applying a child-centred model of detention that
fulfils the rights of the child under the five themes of
provision, protection, participation, preparation and
partnership, this book illustrates how reform can happen.
Drawing on Ireland’s experience of transforming law,
policy and practice and combining theory with real-life
experiences, it demonstrates how children’s rights can be
implemented in detention.

How can we reimagine society in an era of climate change,
pandemic, hunger, poverty, questions of racial, ethnic
and gender justice and other pressing global societal
challenges? Significant threats and dangers lie ahead of us,
but so do opportunities, as new ways of being, thinking and

facilitate thinking about these positive new trajectories and
to become the journal of choice to address the complexities
of global social challenges across disciplines and fields.

It will be the first such journal to be based in the social
sciences while also engaging with research from humanities,
arts and STEM. Including marginalised, minority and
indigenous world views, the journal will be an important
home for research that contributes to the creation of
alternative futures that acknowledge past injustices and are
socially and environmentally just and sustaining.
