In-Person & Virtual Options for the Conference • The conference will be held in-person at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel February 8-11, 2022, and virtual sessions will be held as well during the same days. Speakers may choose to present in- person or virtually and participants may choose to attend in-person or virtually. • Those who register for the in-person conference may also attend virtual sessions if they choose. Those who register for the virtual option will be able to attend in-person sessions virtually or virtual sessions. • All participants will be able to view video recordings of sessions and earn continuing education hours for an entire month after the conference has ended. This annual national refereed professional conference will bring together counselor educators, counseling graduate students, and counseling practitioners to review the latest trends and developments in the areas of law and ethics in counseling. In-person and virtual conference participants will be able to earn up to 24 continuing education hours delivered in-person or virtually via Zoom during the days of the conference. In addition, all participants can earn up to 72 additional hours the month following the conference by viewing recordings of sessions they did not attend during the actual conference. Those who can attend the conference in-person will have the opportunity to experience the sights, music, ambiance, and restaurants in New Orleans. The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) is proud to be a paid sponsor of this event. The University of Holy Cross has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 4268. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Speakers and Professional Content This conference will provide up-to-date cutting edge content in the areas of law and ethics in counseling. In-Person participants will immerse themselves in interesting professional issues…with time built in to celebrate the joy and ambiance of the New Orleans French Quarter. Featured keynote speakers who have substantial knowledge regarding law and ethics in counseling will address conference participants. Dr. Mary A. Hermann is an attorney and a counselor educator. She is a counseling faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She will highlight recent legal cases that have implications for the practice of counselors, counselor supervisors, and counselor educators. Dr. Barbara Herlihy is the national authority on ethics in the United States. She is a faculty member at the University of Texas at San Antonio and will address emerging ethical issues in counseling…this year her topic will be making ethics decisions from a relational perspective. Dr. Rashunda Reed is a counselor educator at Walden University and completed a study on integrated care for her dissertation. Her keynote address will examine the ethical issues involved in integrated care which is related to counselors and physicians working together for the mental and physical health of clients. Dr. Sam Gladding is one the foremost scholars, authors, and leaders in the counseling profession. He is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Gladding will discuss the quandary that all counselors face when trying to make ethical decisions. 4
Dr. Ted Remley, the conference chair, is a professor of counseling at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Remley is both an attorney and counselor and is widely published in the area of legal and ethical issues in counseling. Specialists in counseling law and ethics will attend the conference and will offer workshops, roundtables, and poster sessions related to their particular areas of expertise. Participants will receive a program prior to the conference with the following information for each presentation: program content description and learning objectives; name and qualifications of each program presenter; and the number of NBCC hours offered for each workshop. Cost The in-person registration fee for the conference includes an opening reception, coffee breaks, lunch on Wednesday, use of the hotel conference facilities, and the opportunity to earn up to 24 NBCC approved continuing education hours. The virtual registration fee includes access to all presentations and the opportunity to earn up to 14 NBCC approved continuing education hours. $100 Early Bird Discount for Full Conference Registration until December 15, 2021 for In-Person and Virtual Participants. No discounts available for in-person full day or half day registrations. Registration Registration for the in-person conference is limited. Those who register early will be confirmed. After the in-person capacity has been reached, no further registrations will be accepted. A wait list will be established once the conference is full. In the event a registered participant cancels, individuals on the in-person conference wait list will be notified and given an opportunity to register. Registration for the virtual conference is not limited. Those who wish to attend must complete the registration form and submit it on the Eventbrite webpage for the conference located at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/law-and-ethics-in-counseling-conference-2022-in-person-or-virtual- tickets-162333031467 To register, click on the link above. This is a refereed national conference and programs will be selected by a scholarly committee. Programs must be related to law or ethics. Keynote Presentations & Speaker Bios Dr. Mary A. Hermann Tuesday, February 8, 2022, 5:00 pm (Central Time Zone) Update on Legal Cases Involving Counselors This keynote session will address recent legal cases related to the counseling profession. The impact of these cases on the legal responsibilities of counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators will be discussed. The role of ethical codes in relation to these cases will be clarified. Suggestions for minimizing legal liability will be provided. Dr. Mary A. Hermann is an Associate Professor in the Counselor Education Program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to joining the faculty at VCU, she served as an assistant professor of Counseling at Mississippi State University. Dr. Hermann is a licensed attorney, a licensed professional counselor, a national certified counselor, and a certified school counselor. Her research has focused on legal and ethical issues in counseling, and on women’s experiences. She has authored 2 co-edited books, over 50 publications, and more than 150 presentations, including 7 keynote addresses. She has served as co-chair of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Task Force on the promotion of diversity in leadership, a member of the ACA Ethics Committee, and a member of the ACA 2014 Ethics Revision Task Force. She has also served as President of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) and co-chair of the SACES Women’s Interest Network. She is the founding director of the Women’s Lifespan Development Research Lab. She was named a Fellow in the American Counseling Association in 2020, and she is the recipient of the 2019 Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Professional Leadership Award and the 2016 VCU School of Education Excellence Award for her research, teaching, and leadership. Dr. Barbara Herlihy Wednesday, February 9, 2022, 11:15 am (Central Time Zone) Relational Ethics: Rebalancing our Approach to Ethical Decision Making Have our codes of ethics become too prescriptive? Has our ethical decision making become too rule-bound? Relational ethics is offered as a counterbalancing approach. A process of ethical reasoning that attends to both rules and relationships may produce the best outcomes for clients. Dr. Barbara Herlihy is a Professor in Practice at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a Professor Emerita at the University of New Orleans. She is the co-author of three current textbooks and numerous book chapters and articles, primarily on the topics of ethics, diversity and social justice. She is a past recipient of the Southern Association for Counselor Education & Supervision (SACES) Courtland Lee Social Justice Award and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) 13
Outstanding Mentor Award. She is a Past Chair of the ACA Foundation, ACA International Committee and ACA Ethics Committee. She is a Past President of Chi Sigma Iota, and is an Associate Editor for Counseling and Values. She has presented seminars and workshops on ethical issues and other topics across the country and internationally, most recently in Mexico, Venezuela, Italy, and Malta. Dr. Herlihy has experience as a school counselor, community mental health agency counselor, and private practitioner. Dr. Rashunda Reed Thursday, February 10, 2022, 11:15 am (Central Time Zone) The Ethical Reality of Integrated Care Integrated care, which refers to counselors and physicians working together for the mental and physical health of clients, has become an emerging topic for addressing mental health concerns. This keynote session will address the relevancy and hesitancy of counselors who are involved in this ethically loaded practice. Dr. Reed also will consider the fit of integrated care concerning ethical issues raised by previous keynote speakers. Case studies will be utilized to illustrate practices, promises, and pitfalls related to integrated care. Future directions for research, supervision, and counseling will be shared. Dr. Rashunda Miller Reed is a core faculty member at Walden University where she teaches ethics in counseling for clinical mental health and school counseling students. She coedited a book on ethical and legal issues in school counseling that was published by the American School Counselor Association. She is a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist in Louisiana. She has over 10 years experience providing counseling in home, family, and school-based settings. She is a past president for the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Counselors and served as a member on the Branch Committee for ACA. Her research interests include ethical issues in counseling, integrated care, and promoting relational health in couples and families using intergenerational approaches. Dr. Sam Gladding Friday, February 11, 11:15 am (Central Time Zone) Counselors in Quandaryland: Finding Ethical, Legal, and Creative Ways Out of Dilemmas Counselors are often in quandaries. They are unsure as to what to do, when, and how because of the uniqueness of the situations they face. While there are some universal ways of resolving dilemmas, at times there is ambivalence. This keynote will examine some of the quandaries counselors face and strategies for resolving them. Dr. Samuel T. Gladding is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University. He is a fellow in the American Counseling Association (ACA) and its former president. He has also served as president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards, Chi Sigma Iota, and 14
three ACA divisions: the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW), and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC). He is an ASGW fellow and the former editor of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work. He has made a number of films and written numerous books, including a text on creative arts in counseling. Dr. Gladding received his degrees from Wake Forest, Yale, and UNC-Greensboro. Before becoming a counselor educator, he worked fulltime as a clinician in a rural mental health center and was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He is married to Claire Tillson Gladding and the father of three grown children. Dr. Ted Remley Conference Director Dr. Theodore P. Remley, Jr. (Ted) is a professor of counseling and is the Booth-Bricker Endowed Professor at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Remley holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Florida and a law degree (J.D.) from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a member of Chi Sigma Iota. He is licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and is licensed to practice law in Virginia and Florida. Dr. Remley is the author and co-author of a number of articles, books, and book chapters related to legal and ethical issues in counseling. For more than a decade, he has directed very popular counselor institutes in Italy and Ireland, and in cooperation with the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), in Bhutan, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Malawi, Africa. Dr. Remley has been a school counselor and a college counselor, and practiced law for seven years. In the past, Dr. Remley has held full-time counseling faculty positions at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia; Mississippi State University; the University of New Orleans, and Old Dominion University. Dr. Remley is a former Executive Director of the American Counseling Association. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from The Chicago School for Professional Psychology. He has been named a fellow in the American Counseling Association, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), and in 2017, he received the Past President’s Lifetime Membership Award from the American Association of State Counseling Boards.
