DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOPART INDUSTRY 19TH Century witnessed the development of Automobile Industry. This Industry facilitated the movement of cargo and passengers, it got the necessary momentum at the advent of 20th Century and soon automobile vehicles ruled the world roads. New inventions and added facilities popularized the automobile. Each year new models were introduced which accentuated the demand for passenger cars. Outsourcing of autoparts for maintenance of vehicles gradually developed the Autopart industry. In 1947, when Pakistan appeared on the global map, mostly it consisted of under developed areas. A few motor cars and passenger vehicles were plying in big cities of Pakistan. Soon the imported automobiles found the way into Pakistan. Private sector apprehended the prospects of Auto Industry and Auto Parts required for keeping the vehicles in working conditions. MR. IFTIKHAR ALI MALIK My Respected father (Late) Muhammad Shafi Malik, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Founder PRESIDENT SAARC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY FORMER PRESIDENT FPCCI & LCCI Chairman, Guard Group also hit the idea of making autofilters locally as it was the fast moving item. In those days local manufacturing was difficult because of non-availability of technology and liberal import of auto parts. Likewise some other autoparts dealers tried to develop those parts which involved simple technology. Gradually this industry made it self capable of making quality autoparts and influenced the Govt to impose duties on the import of autoparts which are being manufactured locally. It forced the assemblers of motor vehicles & tractors to out source their requirements. Now the autopart industry has become very strong. It provides employment to thousands of people and save foreign exchange of millions of dollars through import substitution. Along with the growth of Automobile industry a number of allied industries also flourished. The Oil sector, in particular, received huge push as oil is a basic fuel to run the automobiles. Oil Producing countries soon became the richest countries. When the oil began to the used as the tool to earn high profits, efforts started to find an alternate of fuel. Till the end of 20th century some auto manufacturers produced electric vehicles. Pakistan, being short of oil and spending a large amount of foreign exchange earnings on import of oil welcome this change. To promote sales of electric vehicles the Govt, has announced Electric vehicles Policy. It allows small cars with battery capacity of 50 kWh and light vehicles with battery capacity of kWh concessionary rate. Bigger Electric Vehicles cars will attract duty as per others cars. The question is whether Pakistan has developed infrastructure required for electric vehicles like charging stations and do we have necessary 24 electricity hr, available to charge cars. Let’s hope that power plants that are being constructed under CPEC will help in this regard as well. 2021 36 LCN
