Ladybug Picture Book Award 2021 Voting Guide - Learn more NH.gov
The Ladybug Picture Book Award is a program of the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library
and is designed to promote early literacy and honor the best in recent children's picture books. A committee of
children's librarians from around the state selects 10 picture book titles each spring. Then, during November,
New Hampshire children from preschoolers to those in third grade choose the award winner. The winning
picture book is announced at the end of the year.

To be considered for nomination, a picture book must meet the following criteria:

 be published, in its current edition, within the last three years
    be in print
 have an author and illustrator both residing in the United States
    possess strong child appeal
 have artistic quality with text that supports the illustrations
 not be a title previously nominated (visit our website for a list)

Voting may be held anywhere there are Granite State kids of eligible Ladybug voting age (up to
3rd graders). To be a voting site you must make all nominated books for that year available to
your voters (this can be through storytimes, making the books available for kids to read
themselves, or to take home, or a combination of these).
Voting materials for 2021, including a picture ballot, printable tally sheet, and the online tally
form are all available at http://ladybug.nhbookcenter.org. There is also an order form to purchase
voting and book stickers and several customizable flyers you can download to help promote your
Ladybug events.

Voting may be conducted in any way that works for the voting site—picture ballots, raised
hands, gathering near the book (Iowa-caucus style), putting an object in a container by the
chosen book (like a penny raffle), or whatever you come up with that results in a count of votes
for each nominated title that reflects the choices of the kids involved.

Votes must be received at the State Library, either through the online ballot or on an official
tally sheet, by 4:30pm, Friday, December 17, 2021 in order to be counted.

This guide includes information and activities about each of the ten titles nominated for the 2021
Ladybug Picture Book Award. This information was compiled by
Mary Russell, Director, Center for the Book at the NHSL with input from
Felicia Martin, Ladybug Picture Book Award Committee Chair.

We are Water Protectors by Carole

                                               Brook Press, 2020)

Water is the first medicine. It affects and connects us all...
When a black snake threatens to destroy the Earth and poison
her people's water, one young water protector takes a stand to
                                               defend Earth's most sacred resource.
Inspired by the many Indigenous-led movements across North
America, this bold and lyrical picture book issues an urgent
rallying cry to safeguard the Earth's water from harm and

If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall
                                     (Chronicle Books, 2020)

If you come to Earth, there are a few things you need to know... We live in
all kinds of places. In all kinds of homes. In all kinds of families. Each of
us is different. But all of us are amazing. And, together, we share one
beautiful planet. Inspired by the thousands of children she has met during
her travels around the world in support of UNICEF and Save the Children,
Sophie Blackall has created a glorious guide to our home planet. Far more
than a simple compendium, it is a call for us to take care of both Earth
                                     and each other.

About Sophie Blackall

Sophie Blackall has illustrated many books, including the Ivy + Bean series, and Ruby's Wish. She has
twice won the Caldecott medal. Originally from Australia, Sophie now spends half her time in Brooklyn,
NY and half her time on planes and boats and trains, trying to see as much of our world as she can. Her

I'm here, Outside says. I miss you. Outside is waiting--
the most patient playmate, the most generous friend, the
most creative inventor. Each day, Outside and Inside
collide in playful, surprising ways. In lyrical language,
best-selling author Deborah Underwood reminds us that
very little separates us from Outside, and that we are all
part of a much greater universe. Together with Cindy
Derby's emotive illustrations, Outside In evokes the
beauty, simplicity, and wonder that await us all... outside.

About Beth Ferry

Beth Ferry is a children's book author who has spent her life in love with the sea. So many of her best childhood
memories involve the surf and the sand and the salty air. After she grew up, Beth moved as close to the sea as
she could be, and she and her husband raised their family there. A childhood by the beach was the best gift they
could think to give their children, a trio of salty imps. Now that her children are grown, Beth enjoys taking her
bulldog, Chaucer, to the beach. He is an avid chaser of seagulls and a fearless stomper of waves. Her website is

About Juana Martinez-Neal

Juana Martinez-Neal was born and raised by the Pacific Ocean in Lima, the capital of Peru. From the
windows of her house in Miraflores, she could feel the humid air, smell the salty sea, and see the circling
light of El Faro de la Marina. Much like the little girl in this book, Juana once tried to make friends with
the lighthouse keeper of El Faro. She now lives in the desert of Arizona with her family and escapes to
the beach every chance she gets. Juana made her author-illustrator debut with Alma and How She Got
Her Name, which was nominated for the Ladybug Picture Book Award and was a Caldecott Honor book
in 2019. She also illustrated Ladybug nominees La Princessa and the Pea and Frybread. Her web site is
