FOREWORD Studies have indicated that consumers struggle to comprehend nutrition labels on food packs. Technical information on food labels stating complex ingredients, nutrition facts, daily recommended values, serving sizes, allergens and more leave consumers overwhelmed, leading them to make uninformed and unsafe choices that often serve contrary to their desire for choosing food that promotes good health and well-being. The LabelBlind® Nutrition Report of Packaged Food in India (2020) - Top Immunity Boosting Food and Beverages is developed by LabelBlind® to guide Indian consumers on the selection of pre-packaged food & beverage products, based on an empirical, data-backed assessment of food & beverage products currently available in the Indian market. This is a first-of-its-kind report that assesses food & beverage products based on 19 immunity enhancing and immunity-suppressing nutrients, as declared on the food labels of respective products, to guide consumers in the choice of food products that have the potential to improve immunity. The report provides a comprehensive, independent, objective and unbiased information to consumers about the immunity supporting properties of food & beverage products currently sold in India. LabelBlind® works towards strengthening the ecosystem of consumers-businesses and regulatory guidelines to positively impact food habits in India. NUTRITION AND IMMUNITY Immunity is a defense system consisting of a vast network of cells and tissues in our body which provides protection against disease causing microbes. This is critical for our survival. In the case of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, we are beginning to read reports that state the correlation of NCDs – non communicable diseases to the fatalities of Covid-19. Individuals in certain pre-existing illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, cardio vascular disease, and respiratory issues are at a higher risk of having Covid-19 complications. We have well established data stating that our complex immune system requires several micronutrients that have vital, often interdependent roles at every phase of the immune response. It has been noted that even borderline deficiencies in certain nutrients tend to impair the immune system. Moreover, deficiency of a single nutrient can alter the body’s immune response as well. Based on a variety of clinical data, Proteins, Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, Folate, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Selenium, Magnesium, Omega-3 and Probiotics, are particularly important in boosting the immune response 4, 5, 6. These nutrients help the immune system in several ways: ✓ work as antioxidants to protect healthy cells, ✓ sustain growth and activity of immune cells, ✓ produce antibodies. Immunity Suppressing Nutrition Factors : Added Sugar, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat and Sodium. 03. Selection of Samples A sample is defined as one unique product or item based on brand name, product name and variant. Products sold in multiple SKUs (stock keeping units) are not considered as unique products. Example – 1 breakfast cereal with honey flavour and strawberry flavour will be treated as 2 unique products respectively. However, 200 g and 500 g packs of the same flavour will be treated as one single, unique sample. From the LabelBlind® database of 8000 samples, 1405 food & beverage products across 296 brands, that have declared at least 2 immunity enhancing nutrition factors on their label were selected. Food & Beverage products across 14 categories were eligible for the listing – i. Wheat & Multigrain Atta (Flour) ii. Rice iii. Edible Oil iv. Ghee & Butter v. Health Food Drinks vi. ABOUT LABELBLIND® LabelBlind® is India’s First Food Rating System that helps consumers make smart food choices. LabelBlind® is a digital platform launched by The Nutrition Alchemy, a company that offers solutions in the space of Nutrition Technology. LabelBlind® simplifies complex information declared on food labels for consumers to comprehend the nutrition value of food products and apply the understanding to their daily choice of food. The website reviews and rates food products based on a proprietary nutrition assessment model, that evaluates food products on 14 vital parameters. The assessment model is guided by nutrition principles laid down by FSSAI, USFDA and WHO. LabelBlind® has close to 8000 products listed on its website, across 120 categories, including packaged food products, edible oil, staples and nutrition supplements. Ratings for food products are based on their Nutrient Value. LabelBlind® is working with FSSAI in the space of Food Labelling. We collaborate with leading nutritionists to bring accurate, scientific and cutting-edge solutions to consumers. LabelBlind® classifies products into distinct categories, for example, snacks, breakfast cereal, yogurt, bread, fruits, etc. In each category, LabelBlind reviews the most relevant nutrients and ingredients and gives them more weight compared to others. For example - fiber is a very important nutrient in breads and cereals, but really not to be expected in yogurt or beverages.
