How Ketamine Saved My Son's Life In the fall of 2018, I noticed my son sitting on the couch crying. I sat with him. I asked him why he was sad. My then 17-year old, Kenny, a young man on the autism spectrum said, “I love fantasy. I love Harry Potter and anime. I do not live in fantasy. I do not belong in this world.” What I did not know is that he chose January 22, 2019 to be the day to end his life. As the day approached, he cleaned out his school locker. He gave some belongings to his nine siblings. And he hand-wrote his good-bye letter. On Sunday, January 22, all my kids happened to be home. We watched football and ate together. Following the game, I retreated to my room, put my headphones on and meditated. In the meantime, Kenny placed his letter on the washing machine thinking that no one would be doing laundry for at least one hour. He told his siblings that he was “going for a run.” And he left. Chris, my oldest son, was upstairs contemplating whether to do laundry on Sunday or not. Alone in the laundry room, he found the note. Throwing my bedroom door open and waving it high in the air, he told us that he had found Kenny’s suicide note. It all happened so fast. Miranda intuitively knew where he went. She knew that Kenny crossed over a bridge every day on his walk home from high school. Barefoot, she ran up the hill screaming his name. Chris also knew, but for a different reason. He knew that Kenny would have made calculations to ensure that his death would be fast and effective. Chris and Rachel jumped in a vehicle and headed up the hill. Trembling, my husband jumped in his vehicle and followed. AMELIA MORA MARS
I sat home carefully reading the letter for clues. He disclosed that his plan was to jump from the freeway overpass. I called 911 to notify dispatch of his plan. Honestly, I did not want to go to the scene in the event that he had accomplished his mission. I could not bear the thought that my final memory of him would be to look down from the bridge to witness his lifeless body. His siblings found him pacing on the bridge gathering courage to end his life. He was dissociative but cooperative when the Police arrived. He was taken to ER and eventually placed on an involuntary hold when a bed was found in a juvenile facility two hours away. For the 10 days that he was safe, we as a family cried with each other and did our best to regroup. We visited him yet did not know for certain his plans for the future. When he returned home, we were scared. What if he tried again? Miranda slept on the couch for nights with her dog to monitor any movement. An event like this changes a family forever. We came so close to losing our beloved son and brother. We would do anything to help Kenny. At the time, I shared an office suite with Dr. Bhasin, an anesthesiologist that specializes in ketamine treatment. I witnessed the outcomes of his patients and learned about the results of ketamine from them. I trusted Dr. Bhasin with my son. I hoped for a quick, positive outcome. With each treatment, Kenny freed himself from the lies he believed about himself. With his permission, each session was video-taped and used for our time together to integrate his experiences following treatment. These videos can be found at https://pointketamine.com/featured-patient/ Following the six ketamine sessions, Kenny made Dr. Bhasin a chocolate pie as his way of saying thank you for saving his life. As for me, it is my privilege to collaborate with the PointKetamine team to guide beautiful souls who long to live a life of freedom. I believe in you. I'm here for you. NEURO-PLASTICITY Depression, childhood trauma, anxiety and PTSD often keep our brains stuck in a cycle of dwelling on the past while also fixating on the fear of the future. When Talk Therapy Isn't Enough Studies show that through low dose ketamine treatment, a unique environment is created within the brain. This environment allows receptors, proteins, and neural pathways to work in more optimal ways that were not available due to the effects of depression, anxiety, and trauma. KAP provides the brain the opportunity to: Relax defenses to get below the surface Release past experiences and traumas Rewrite stuck parts of the brain Reconnect to ourselves and our body Rev up neurons for new cell growth Receive in-person compassionate care Restore hope for depression, anxiety & trauma AMELIA MORA MARS
WHY HAVE A PSYCHOTHERAPIST PRESENT FOR KETAMINE TREATMENTS? Deep truths hidden within your unconscious may be unearthed, trauma buried may be released and let go. Patients will likely encounter imagery and sensations that do not make sense at times. Experiences from being more aware of how your body feels, quieting of the mind, feelings of love and gratitude, or transcendent, spiritual feelings of being connected to the God/Universe, a sense of oneness with all living creatures, and reconciling the past from a different perspective. Amelia guides a patient through the process more directly. And provides a safety anchor for those who experience anxiety or negative emotions that can emerge during ketamine sessions. This is especially important for those with a history of trauma to not feel alone but instead emotionally held and supported. There is a reassuring sense that one can let go more easily if there is a guide to ensure our safety. It gives us permission to take more risks in what we allow ourselves to see and come to understand. AMELIA MORA MARS
