PRESIDENT REPORT - JUNE 2021 Well the good news this month is that the community hall is now air conditioned!! This was made possible by a grant of $20,000 from RACQ Foundation. A big thank you to them and to Wide Bay Air Conditioning who installed the system last week. It will now be so much more comfortable during those hot sticky months. Another long term project done and dusted. However, the next one looming on the horizon is the revamp of the parklands at the hall. We have put suggestions to Council regarding relocating the memorial stone and flagpole to a less cramped area. The work was originally to be done in last year's Council budget but will now be done in the new budget we understand. It's a lovely time of year in River Heads with mild weather - sunny days and crisp, starry nights. The sunrises and sunsets are stunning! It certainly is a lovely area we live in and we are duty bound to protect our relaxed way of life and our unique ecology. The June Open Mic is happening on Saturday 19 June, starting at 4.30pm. This event is sponsored by Fraser Coast RV Park and Ultra Music. RHPA is hosting the event. Entry is by gold coin donation with proceeds going to charity. Anyone wishing to perform should register beforehand with Suzanne Taylor from RV Park by email at frasercoastrvpark@gmail.com . Don’t forget, Fishing Club raffles are held on the 2nd Friday of the month. Great fun and prizes as the old fashioned chocolate wheel clacks around. RHPA raffles are also held every Friday from 5.30pm with prizes of Meat Tray or Breakfast Tray from Urangan Butchers; Dinner for 2; selection of beverages, so come along and enjoy yourselves. Great food, great view and great people!! All made possible by our fantastic volunteer workforce! More helpers needed! Phone 0499 992 442. Sporting Teams for River Heads: Anyone interested in forming a team should phone 0499 992 442. It is high time River Heads was on the sporting map. We have a wealth of sporting talent in our community plus a fantastic playing field and canteen at the Reserve in Seafarer Avenue, so let’s get mobilised!! A big thank you to all the guys working on the canteen. They are doing a fantastic job – Nev Watson, Mark Hensel, Nick Burgess and anyone else who has helped. MORE VOLUNTEERS DESPERATELY NEEDED FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS PER MONTH – PREPARATION OF FOOD – TILL OPERATION – PLATING OF FOOD – BAR TENDING PHONE 0499 992 442. We can’t continue to provide services and facilities to our community without our volunteers. That’s all folks! Take care, stay well and enjoy life. Billie Rustin Page 3
COUNCILLOR Division 7 NEWS Winter is with us now and it really seems like yesterday that I was wishing you all a Merry Christmas. I will blame that on last month’s little error with the community chat! I have published that it was on Thursday June 1st and we all know that the 1st is not a Thursday, please accept my apologies! My June Chat will be Tuesday the 22nd of June, my May Gathering was Tuesday the 25th, not sure what was going on there. We still have a lot going on right across the region and I will do a bit of a shout out for two of my favourites that are just around the corner, Relish Food & Wine Festival and the Teebar Rodeo. Relish Food & Wine Festival is on Saturday June 5th at the Mary River Parklands and there really is something for everybody with workshops to live music and this year a Pimm’s High Tea! For more information please visit https://relishfrasercoast.com.au . Our next great event is the Teebar Show & Sports Day, which is a great day out in the country with non- stop action and lots to see and do. This will be the 9th year I have volunteered at the event and I really recommend the day. For more information please visit https://www.teebar.com.au . Council has been keeping me busy with a number of large projects on the books as we speak. I do thank the River Heads community members who took the time to pass comment on the Planning Scheme & Open Spaces Strategy. We have a number of other major projects underway and coming up. Council would love more feedback and input so please keep an eye out for information or register to have your say at https://frasercoast.engagementhub.com.au/ . Community Chat My next Community Chat will be Tuesday June 22nd at the River Heads Hall from 10.30 – 11.30 am. If there are any matters that require attention please let me know. If you can’t make my Community Chat, I am happy to visit you at home. To make an appointment, please contact me on 0448 045 041 or email darren.everard@frasercoast.qld.gov.au . Council Information Feel free to like my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/darreneverardfrasercoast/ to stay abreast of updates on what is going on in the region. I do try and update it as information comes to hand. Council Contact Just a reminder that if you have any matters which require urgent Council attention, please contact the Council call centre on 1300 79 49 29 and we will do our best to attend to your needs. (Sue Watson) Jesus said “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart…” (Matthew 11:29). There is an aspect to gentleness that is often a magnificent demonstration of noble character - good manners. This is why those who have good manners are called “gentlemen” or “gentle ladies.” Good manners are basically a way that we honour and show respect for others. They have become so rare in these times that when they are seen they can stand out even more as those who are of a different spirit. Since the Lord said that as we treat even the least of His people, He will regard it as the way that we treat Him; we should be treating everyone with the highest respect and good manners. It seems like the world was a far gentler and friendlier place when good manners were considered essential behaviour. The degrading of manners in many areas today has been in parallel to the way we have allowed God to be removed from our culture, only to be replaced by increasing disrespect and intolerance for others, and has increased into rage and violence. To be truly gentle does not mean that we become timid mealy-mouthed pushovers. Jesus was not, but boldly stood up to His accusers, calling them hypocrites, until it was time to go to the cross. Then He stood mute before them. Since His exhortation was to learn from Him we, too, must keep in mind that there is a time for peace and a time for war (see Ecclesiastes 3), there is a time to respond to accusations and opposers, and a time not to. Even when it is time to challenge our opposers we must keep in mind that we are sons and daughters of the King, and must conduct ourselves with the dignity of those of His household. Welcome from the Fishing Club. As I write this month’s article, the cold weather is on the way and the visitors from southern states are heading north in big numbers for the best weather anywhere in Australia. We are so lucky to call this area home all year. With good weather for the next few months, fishing should improve but the iconic species like barramundi and king salmon will be much harder to find in cooler waters. The review of the Great Sandy Marine Park is still to be released. We understand it has been finalised and all relevant parties have had their submissions assessed. Perhaps it will be released after the Queensland State budget has been handed down sometime this month. The Club produced a calendar this year with photos submitted by members in the monthly photo competition. Quality is excellent and well worth the cost. This is just an additional membership benefit. Other benefits include insurance cover while attending Club endorsed events through QAFCA membership, River Heads Progress Association membership, subsidised annual Club trip away, pizza nights and the best of all, friendships formed with other members. The Club chook raffles on the second Friday night of the month at the River Heads Hall are still very well received although numbers drop off a bit through cooler months. Above is the photo of the Club record barramundi caught by Rob Mills a while ago. It proves you don’t need a boat to catch the fish of your dreams. Until next month-may your lines be tight, knots strong and hooks sharp. The Editor - River Heads Fishing Club Page 7
FROM THE FOOD FOREST ‘RAID THE GARDEN’ Event - Sunday 6 June You're invited to come and raid the River Heads Food Forest on Sunday 6 June between 9 -12 am. Bring some snips, newspaper, envelopes, bags, tubs, etc for cuttings or plants. Address is 45 Ariadne Street, River Heads. BYO morning tea, or purchase from the River Heads Cafe across the road. As I am transitioning out of managing the River Heads Food Forest I am happy to see plants go to good homes. The plant list pinned on the FB page and in the FB Group will give you an idea of what's growing on-site. Hard copies of plant lists will be available on Sunday, and will be updated in August in time for RiverFest. It might be a much simpler list with less variety of plants as the garden is no longer watered and maintenance is minimal. The River Heads Food Forest site will revert to Council at the end of this year. Meanwhile the adjoining Community Garden inside the fence will continue to be open most Tuesday mornings from 9 -11 am. Contact Billie Rustin, President of the River Heads Progress Association, if you would like to be involved. Christel Schrank River Heads Food Forest Page 8

HISTORIAN MESSAGE RIVER HEADS History of Environment Projects at River Heads Reserve (Part 2) The main request as a result of the original community survey mentioned in last month’s Review was a need for walking paths in the park at Seafarer Drive. Neville Watson of Watermans Way used his ride-on mower from 2007 to provide these paths, and later in 2011 a tractor was provided by Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC) for establishing these paths and maintaining the general area. Attempts were initiated for some Council funding but money was tight due to the GFC. In late 2008 a man representing Ocean Watch contacted my husband, Warren, who was on the River Heads Progress Association (RHPA) Committee. This contact was initially through a local National Parks Ranger, known later in 2010 for his research on local turtles. An Ocean Watch grant was then applied for on our behalf through the Federal Government Environment Department. Note: The River Heads Progress Association administered the Ocean Watch Grant as sponsor. The Ocean Watch representative had had concerns about the foreshore area with 3 main projects and objectives: 1. The infestation of groundsel in the foreshore area and the need for enhancing natural vegetation. 2. The erosion in the salt pan and mangroves through the illegal use of 4X4 vehicles, and the need for some fencing to prevent the 4X4 vehicles accessing the foreshore. 3. The erosion of the drain running under Seafarer Drive through the Reserve to the silt trap dam needing revegetation to slow down the body of water coming down the natural water course and off the road. The first job of eliminating groundsel was carried out by nine international conservation volunteers in March 2009. They cut the groundsel and painted the stumps with weedkiller. They worked for four days in the foreshore zone and also assisted an FCRC Foreshore Environment staff member in replanting a line of trees off Bengtson Road that had been illegally removed. The FCRC staff member provided the gate and rocks still standing at the point that in the past had been used by the 4X4 vehicles. Rocks were also placed either side of the gate and at the end of the Bengtson Road cul-de-sac, as many vehicles had also used this to access the foreshore. Part of the fence was constructed behind the then vacant blocks on Seafarer Drive. Some drivers tried to access the foreshore off the Watermans Way vacant blocks but many became bogged in the area which is now the oval, as there were major drainage issues on the site after heavy rain. Page 11
HISTORIAN MESSAGE (Continued) All the plants were obtained from the FCRC Community Nursery for planting on the creek banks to provide a buffer zone and to eliminate the erosion. This initial planting began in April/May 2009. Initially, the Ocean Watch grant was approximately $9,000 and increased to about $11,000, but there was also some additional support from the Burnett Mary Regional Group towards a water cart. The housing of a water cart and road access were of concern so instead the money was used for a contractor to work on the ground preparation of a 240m planting buffer line for the 2010/2011 Caring for Country Project. Application for this second grant was submitted through the FCRC Grants Coordinator, who used the Concept Master Plan for a live on-line application in October 2009. FCRC Director Peter Smith was the legal sponsor to the Federal Government for this second grant (February 2010 to August 2011). A condition was put in place that all volunteers working on-site should become Community Environmental Partners (CEP). This was a means to cover all volunteers under Work Place Health and Safety. Joanne McLaughlin Next month: Specific details of the 18 months $16,000+ project, as well as the RHPA Reserve entrance path, will be covered in Part 3. WILDLIFE MATTERS (Wildlife QLD Fraser Coast) Latham’s Snipe For 25 years the Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay have been observing the bird life at Dundowran Beach, particularly around the various lagoons. From September 2020 to March 2021 several Latham’s Snipe were repeatedly sighted. These migratory waders fly to Japan and back again each year. Latham’s Snipe are quite common in Summer from Hervey Bay to Victoria and South Australia. They are secretive, preferring the naturally occurring plants and grasses around lagoons, as is the case at Dundowran Beach. In some lagoons, where the vegetation has been mowed, the Snipe may break their cover and be seen probing for bugs in mowed lawns; but ultimately they depend on the long vegetation for survival. Photo by Belinda Rafton Not only do Latham’s Snipe benefit from natural vegetation fringing Hervey Bay’s lagoons but also beneficial insects thrive there too. Beneficial insects are encouraged in commercial orchards as they help reduce biting insects and help pollinate commercial fruit trees such as Avocado and Macadamia. Similarly, local gardens can benefit from letting natural vegetation thrive around lagoons. A few metres of natural vegetation around lagoons discourage cane toads, and the big and rather messy birds invading lawns such as the Magpie Goose. Latham’s Snipe share natural vegetation around lagoons with small colourful birds such as the Variegated Fairy-wren and the Double-barred Finch. Wherever there is slow moving water or still water, there will be mosquitoes and sandflies. With natural vegetation around lagoons, insect eating birds, such as martins and swallows will be encouraged: these being highly effective in controlling mosquitoes. A fringe of natural vegetation around lagoons is a thing of beauty, and, also has so many natural advantages rather than mowing to the water’s edge. Submitted by Frank Ekin, member Wildlife Qld Fraser Coast Page 13
WILDLIFE TALKS (Wildlife QLD FC) It has been many years since the Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland has invited a reptile expert to speak in our libraries. Fortunately, the drought has broken. Chris Muller, snake catcher and fauna relocator, will be speaking in the Hervey Bay Library on June 18 and in the Maryborough Library on June 25 at 1pm for both centres. Chris’s life has been dedicated to the welfare of wildlife. From bringing home lizards, turtles and snakes as a child to working voluntarily as a zoological laboratory technician in the Queensland Museum as a teenager, he was destined to a life involved with fauna welfare. His first experience of being a snake rescuer, lasting ten years, occurred when he was placed on the National Parks and Wildlife list which enabled him to relocate snakes from homes and other places not totally amenable to reptiles. After being a tour guide on Fraser Island for eight years, he worked in Central Queensland as a fauna spotter. It was in this job, his knowledge of species widened and where he had the unfortunate experience of seeing wildlife evicted from their homes. Now resident in Hervey Bay, Chris continues his work as a spotter and is at present a snake catcher, fauna spotter, and works in the disability sector. Bookings for Chris’s talk can be made by phoning the Hervey Bay Library on 41974220. Want to place an ad? The Review is published from February to December each year. We need your property now! We have been continuing to smash sales targets every month with no sign of the market slowing down. But we now have a long list of buyers with very little stock to sell. Vacant blocks in Turtle Cove are now starting from around $250,000 if you can find one and any block under 1000m2 with views are fetching around the $170,000 mark. If you are sitting on an investment block or have been considering selling your home now is the time to sell! With so much interest around many buyers are missing out on properties and are desperate to buy. Contact us for a free market appraisal and you might be shocked at the prices people are achieving at the moment. Some blocks of land have more than doubled in price! We would also like to welcome a new sales agent to the team in Colin Cotter. Colin has been put on to help deal with the massive influx of buyers. Rentals are also very hard to come by at the moment and we have many qualified tenants waiting to get into a property, if you are unhappy with your current agent or want to get an idea of what you could rent your house for contact our property manager Tracey.
