Joaquín Segura August, 2022 Mexico City, 1980 Lives and works in Mexico City Joaquín Segura has built his artistic imaginary through a symbolic dismantling of grand notions such as history, truth, and power in the context of diverse ideological systems from the 20th and 21st Centuries. He channels his obsessions through propaganda objects, memorabilia and the iconographic legacy of the radical as a starting point for the development of new readings on the contradictions that permeate geopolitical structures in the contemporary world. His artistic practice constitutes a reflection on the phenomenology of violence and its contextual relations to notions such as sociopolitical microclimate, asymmetrical history, and the role of ideology in the contemporary world. Some of the most relevant concerns in his recent production revolve around the nature of power and its self-regulating mechanisms, identity conformation processes in highly-unstable en- vironments and the ontological significance of dissent and failure, with a particular emphasis on its materiality. Formally diverse and ex- tremely personal, his oeuvre strives to meditate about the fissure, understood from an encompassing perspective in intimate relationship with the ideas of crisis and the present moment. His work has developed through platforms such as installation, photography, action or video and has been shown in diverse venues such as: Museo de la Ciudad de Querétaro, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, La Panadería, Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City; El Museo del Barrio, Anthology Film Archives, White Box and apexart in New York; LA>
Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 Armas y política en América Latina Color field painting executed from the abstraction of a volume cover edited in 1960 by a historic publishing company from Buenos Aires, offering a wide reflection on militarization and US interventionism in Latin America. The original volume is part of Segura’s archive.

Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 Diciembre 22, 1997 (Máscara Roja) Triptych made of abstract compositions important due to its severity. from two declassified documents requested to the National Security Archive (US). Sent by US diplomats in 1999 and intended for the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Washington, these secret wires detail the role played by the Mexican Army and its involvement with the paramilitary group which executed the Acteal massacre on December 22 of 1997, when 45 tzotziles women, children, and men lost their live. This ominous episode marked the political life of the country until the Mexican government recognized its responsibility at a lacklustre official ceremony carried out at the Secretaría de Gobernación on December 2020. This work proposes a subtle and minimum reflection regarding the construction of history and the types of symbolic violence that underly within the use of power on behalf of the institution in Mexico, while creating a explicit tension between a visual minimum and a referential load historically

Conceived initially as part of a body of work more widely developed result from the interweaving of both artists’ interests, Ejercicios de balance #2 is an expansive installation that deconstructs key elements of the contemporary heraldry, the collective imaginary of social justice, and the iconography of both labour and social landscape from the twentieth century.

Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 Derrotismo y contradicciones Color field painting executed from the abstraction of an anti-Castro pamphlet cover made in 1965 by a Mexican publishing house. The original document is a curious experiment of counter-propaganda, where the author replicates each paragraph as textual passages from a speech pronounced by Fidel Castro on the same year for the occasion of the Cuban Revolution’s sixth anniversary. Just as the rest of the pieces that make up the series of paintings, the original volumes are part of Segura’s archive.

Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 On Contradiction This is the most recent work of an ongoing large format oil painting series. Through a color-field abstraction operation, the pictoric image is constructed by subtracting all of the textual information present in the cover of a 1967 homonymous pamphlet published by the Foreign Languages Press, an editorial imprint with an international reach established in Beijing in 1952 and controlled by China International Publishing Group, a publishing organization overseen in turn by the Communist Party of China. Its content is considered central to the conformation of the Maoist canon, mostly reflecting on universality, identity and struggle. Reminiscent to visual strategies explored by the artist in past projects, this painting series aims to reflect on the material traces of certain ideological constructs, questioning the current relevance of the ideas contained in propaganda materials by underscoring the fluctuation and symbolic attrition processes to which the original material has been exposed.

Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 Wage Labour and Capital Color field abstraction of a pamphlet edition of Marx’s homonymous work, published in 1982 by the disappeared Editorial Cartago, the propaganda imprint of the Argentinian Communist Party which became instrumental in its cultural offensive seeking to freely distribute Marxist literature in Latin America.

The highly questionable military command during the battle caused extreme controversy, also due to Richard Nixon´s Vietnamese policy, considered bloody and senseless at the time. This high-casualty 10- day incident was originally just planned as a diversionary tactic, instead leading to a significant loss of human lives in order to achieve doubtful strategic superiority in the overall armed conflict.

Joaquín Segura Project selection August, 2022 Essay on Reconstruction (José Martí) Site-specific project developed in El Pantanal, an under-developed settlement in process of regularization, located in the outskirts of Granada, Nicaragua. It consisted in the full reconstruction of an architectural element, formerly in ruins, placed in the middle of this former swamp area. Although its real origin remains unclear, it apparently constituted the remains of a monument erected for Jose Martí after the fall of the Somoza dictatorship. The reconstruction process was executed with active participation of the local community.

According to its inhabitants, a vast quantity of the marble used in the construction of Nicolae Ceauçescu’s People’s Palace comes from this location in the middle of the Carpathians. This building is notorious for a number of reasons, among them, its massive size and the enormous economic and human cost of its edification, executed by a team of 700 architects and 20,000 workmen, then abruptly interrupted by the Romanian Revolution in December 1989.
