PRAYER OF THE MONTH What is good? What is required of us? “To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8) God of love and tender mercy (‘womb compassion’), in our club relationships, help us to act justly, to love tenderly, to be ready to show compassion at all times – as we walk humbly, prayerfully with you. OUR COVID-19 POLICY • At any Club gathering, maintain your distance - 1.5m minimum between people. • No physical contact between people. • No handshaking. • No sharing of anything – water, hats, gear, equipment, food, lollies, biscuits – nothing where you put your hand in to take something out. • Carry hand sanitiser with you. • The Health Dept have said that car-pooling is OK, as is going by bus, to an event. • If you are experiencing Covid symptoms, please stay away. A good proportion of our members is in the danger age range. • Keep up to date at: https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 4 ABOUT WALKS Trips leave from St Brigid’s Car Park at 78 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill, unless otherwise advised. Leaders are asked to print their own Nomination Forms and to consult the Leaders’ Guide on the Club website. https://www.bcbc.bwq.org.au/assets/nomination.pdf If changes are made to walks (date, location, cancelation etc.) leaders are asked to advise Phil Murray on Ph: 5522 9702. Visitors are required to do two walks before the Committee officially declares them Club members. Nominations for walks are needed at least 3 days in advance to allow adequate time to make suitable arrangements such as carpooling. INSURANCE Our bi-laws state that the minimum number of persons on a walk is 4. This is for safety reasons – if there is an incident, one person stays with the injured person, and two go out to seek help. Thus, two remain together at the incident site and two safely walk out quickly. If there is not the 4 persons, the trip becomes a “private” walk outside the Clubs sphere. Thus, the participants are not covered by our insurance. Not 4 walkers, not insured. The EMERGENCY+ App Please download the “EMERGENCY+” App on your phone. Get is from your App Store. It is free. It is easy to use. https://emergencyapp.triplezero.gov.au/ It will help the Trippel Zero operator to locate you when in an emergency situation. The App goes into your phone’s GPS to find you location, and then you can tell the operator, who then can tell the SES exactly where you are – they will use their GPS to get to your exact location – better than trying to describe track junctions, turnoffs, burnt stumps, etc. A helicopter can only find you by GPS – it does not use roads to get to you. Determining caller location is the most critical piece of information emergency call-takers need when a call comes in. If callers don't know where they are, emergency services can't send help. When activated, the built-in accessibility features of a smartphone will describe aloud what appears on-screen, so a caller can use the app without seeing it. The Emergency+ app is available for free download in Apple iOS, Android and Windows phone versions, and has already saved lives by ensuring emergency services arrive on-scene as quickly as possible to assist someone in need. One group for which Emergency+ has obvious benefits is bushwalkers, and there are numerous examples where lost or injured bushwalkers have used the app to pinpoint their location for emergency services. MASKS FROM 6:01pm Saturday 3rd July TO 6:00am Friday 16th July. A mask must be worn at all times when outside of your place of residence, including in workplaces, where safe to wear a mask and you cannot physically distance, on public transport and when doing non‑vigorous exercise. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. We have a new President! Congratulations to Cath Wood, who was voted in at last month’s General Meeting. 2. At the same meeting, we gained a new Life Member, too. Congratulations to Phil Murray on this well-deserved award. Details of his 30+ years of meritorious service were published in June Jilalan. Our New President, Cath, congratulates Phil on his Life Membership.
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 5 COMING EVENTS WEDNESDAY 14th JULY SALVIN CREEK Mt Gravatt Central to Carindale STROLL Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092 Meet at: Mt Gravatt Central Shops, Logan Rd at Mt Gravatt Central, Stop 37; Stop ID: 002232; in front of St Vinnies & the Mower Centre Time: 3:30pm Cost: Free Grade: S31 Distance: 6.5km @ 2hr Location: Southern Suburbs – Mt Gravatt Central, Mt Gravatt east & Carindale Web: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/-27.5218/153.1101 Emerg Off: Greg Ph: 0418 122 995 Bring This Number With You Bring a torch Wear A MASK Though Strolls are “vigorous exercise” and thus are exempt from the rules, we still will wear masks and stay the 1.5m apart. It is the spirit of the law and not the letter of the law that we abide. This Stroll will, for the first half from Logan to Cavendish Rds, be along nice suburban streets and paths. Your track will be gradually going up, then down to Chester Park and onto the TAFE. From here, you will be following the creek through bush at the back of housing estates. Some will be on paths, some won’t. For a short time in the middle, you will have the pleasure of exploring the grass and vegetation beside the creek as it passes through a degraded landscape, altered by resource extraction, neglect, flooding and regrowth. But there is only a short distance of off-track exploring between Pine Mtn and Creek Rds, and again between Donnington and Donnington Sts. The rest of the Creek has bike paths running beside it. This Stroll is short – only 6.5km, but I have added in time for ‘exploring” the long grass and fallen shrubs as above. Buses to Mt Gravatt are: 113; And Bus routes 170 all the way to 178. Buses home from the Carindale Bus Station are numerous and often. Come along to discover you inner-self. See you at Mt Gravatt Central on this Bastille Day. No more than 15 nominations will be accepted, so that we can give the proper attention to all trainees. To Nominate: email to fmrqld@gmail.com, with subject “Cliff Safety Nomination”. SUNDAY 18th JULY Mt BEERWAH DAYWALK Leader: Matt Palmer Ph: 0438 720 235 Meet at: St Bridget Carpark, Red Hill Time: 6.30am Cost: $15 Grade: S72 Location: Glasshouse Mtns, north of Brisbane Web: https://www.aussiebushwalking.com/qld/glass-house-mountains/mt-beerwah-east-face Emerg Off: Kerry Mulligan Ph: 0421 022 250 Mt Beerwah at 556m is the highest of the Glasshouse mountains and is one of the most popular. On weekends the mountain is often absolutely chockers as a conga line weaves it way to the highest point. Fortunately for us, this all occurs on the Northern ascent which we will avoid like a Trump supporters convention. We are going to ascend and descend by the Eastern Face route, a much quieter and pleasant route. The Eastern Face route is much less slippery but is more exposed. There are two points on the route where it is preferable to use ropes. At all other times there are sufficient hand and foot holes for comfortable egress. As most of the walk is on rock, we have fabulous views of the surrounding landscape. We climb up from around 100m altitude, so it is a decent assent and descent. One of the highlights of climbing Mt Beerwah is walking through thickets of Eucalyptus kabiana or Mt Beerwah Mallee which is only found on Mt Beerwah and Mt Coolum. Mallee is unusual in Southeast Queensland, although they are the most common form of Eucalypt their normal terrain is West of the Great Dividing Range and Southern Australia. Last time I was on Mt Beerwah a Peregrine Falcon was circling so with luck we will get to see it. Mt Beerwah is a place that you avoid in the wet as it turns into a great big cake of soap, we also will take into consideration the temperature forecast for the day, as it is fully exposed to the Sun, if it were too hot, we would need to reschedule. Matt MONDAY 19th JULY MONTHLY MEETING AND GUEST SPEAKER Contact: Cath Wood Ph 0428 755 100 Time: 7.30pm Where: St Michael’s Parish Hall, 250 Banks St, Dorrington The hall is in the lower carpark behind the church. Drive down the ramp at the left Web: http://www.stmichaelsdorrington.org.au/contact-us.html Our Guest Speaker this month is Michael Simpson, speaking about The Three Capes Walk in Tasmania, which he did recently with Karen Franklin – and other Tassie walking highlights. This topic
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 7 arose because Naomi Pucko of Koncept Konnect originally proposed a presentation on Stewarts Bay Lodge, Tasmania, for our March meeting, but then was unable to come at the last minute. Now she has agreed with me that a talk by an actual walker who’s done walks in the Tasman Peninsula area, where the Lodge/cabins are located would be much more interesting for our members and that she can provide information about the lodge (www.stewartsbaylodge.com) , which I will share on the night. Our meetings are friendly and relaxed gatherings where members and visitors can hear about recent and upcoming club events and ask questions about walks that interest them. Nominations for walks are taken after the formalities and people catch up over a companionable supper. Terry is still collecting tax deductable donations for The Little King’s Movement for the Handicapped. We have supported this organisation for over 40 years; for the first 15 years by helping out with their annual door-knock appeal, and them by collecting donations amongst ourselves to give to them. Some members and past members have become volunteers at their respite centre looking after the disabled clients. Learn more about Little Kings at https://thelittlekingsmovement.org.au/ All are welcome. This creek is a long forgotten one – buried deep in time and deep underground. However, you will find 5 of the tributaries in the western part of the catchment. You’ve probably driven past this little creek numerous times and never even known it existed. Today, get up close and personal to it. Almost at the start, you will go off-track through a little un-kept Council park to reach the first tributary. Then you hit the road to find the next source in a corner of suburbia. Once caught by “tributary bagging”, you will discover the third in another forgotten bit of bush below the high-rises of Stuartholme Rd. The last is near Colorado Ave. Four in the one day – you will be gratified. Following the Creek now, the party will go down suburban streets and across parks following the trees and person-hole covers. There will be a deviation or two to make sure this creek is still where it is supposed to be. You might even have to jump a fence. Then, it is below the de Jersey home, through the high-end eating precinct of Nash St, through a spots field, into a demolished tennis centre, across a main road, along a canal to the underpass to a restaurant. All in all, an exciting adventure in finding where a long-forgotten creek flows and trying to catch a glimpse of it. Come along to help me on this magical mystery tour. The park was initially declared so as to ensure rail passengers were provided a decent view of Queensland's forest. Use of the tunnel halted in 1932 when the line was moved to the east into a new tunnel. The park was extended in 2010 when Mooloolah Forest Reserve was added to the National Park. You will commence from the southern entrance at Landsborough along the Tunnel Walk until we reach the left exit to Roses Circuit. The party take another left exit along the Myla Track which has great views to the south. I will mention here that there are some steep hills to climb so bring your poles with you, as there will be loose gravel. Once we complete the Myla Track, the group join back on to Roses Circuit where there will be some more hills and make your way to the top where we can see views towards Maleny- Montville Road behind us. We will have morning tea along the way here so we can stop and take in the views. Our party then start the descent towards the Tunnel Track and turn left to the start of the walk on the northern end at Dorset Drive. Our return journey will be a straight flat path through the train tunnel (unless you wish to do the tunnel bypass up & over the ridge) and back to the carpark at Beech Road. Come and join me on this nice winter walk through another part of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. WEDNESDAY 28th JULY ALBION TO FORTITUDE VALLEY STROLL Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Then, jump on the bikeway and follow the Creek upstream to the spaghetti junction of the meeting of the Clem 7 and Airport Link Tunnels with the Inner-City Bypass – truly a confusing junction of overpasses and roads. Get giddy just looking at them. . Now, walk across the Creek to the Ekka Grounds and through Bowen Park – following the back roads to Fortitude Valley Station. Artists Impression Only SATURDAY 31st JULY Mt HUNTLEY DAYWALK Leader: Mike Wood Ph: 3398 1405 Meet at: St. Brigid's, Red Hill. Time: 6.00am. Cost: $30 Grading: M66 Location: Southern Main Range between C’ham & Teviot Gaps Web: https://peakvisor.com/3d-map/peak/mount-huntley.html Distance: 7.5km, Ascent: 602m, Descent: 602m Emerg Off: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. This is another beautiful section of the Main Range. Last year Matthew Palmer led the walk to Mt Doubletop; this year we will head to Mt Huntley. Both walks start near Lemon Tree Flat. It is a long drive there, hence the early start time from Red Hill. This walk is all ridge walking along open clear tracks. Did I say tracks? I mean bush tracks, sometimes it is there and sometimes not. Only the top of Huntley has any scunge and it is minimal. The walk starts from the Lemon Tree which is near the source of Swan Creek. We will follow the creek briefly before heading up an open ridge which takes the party to the Huntley/Sentinel Ridge. Once there, we will begin to have views along the Main Range and points west. The ridge now gets steeper with rocky outcrops to bypass. Once we reach Mt Huntley proper, there is a tricky cliff line we need to ascend (we also need to descend it on the way back which can be even trickier). Once on top it is now just matter of wandering through pretty banksias and wattles until the walkers reach the top which is an established campsite.
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 10 We return the same way. So, ring me to discuss the walk. Don’t forget to bring the usual equipment for a longish day walk, water, food etc. Mike SATURDAY 1st AUGUST Mt COOT-THA CIRCUIT DAYWALK Leader: Paddy Taylor Ph: 3378 4813 Meet: Indooroopilly State School Drop-off, Taringa Pde. Time: 8am Cost: $2 Grade: L44 Location: North-West Brisbane Web: https://trailwanderer.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/20140403-mt-coot-tha-forest- park-track-map-2.jpg Emerg. Off: Barry Ph: 3378 4813 Numerous buses service Stop 27 (Indooroopilly School) on Moggill Rd. From Taringa Pde, we will drop down into Moore Park, and proceed to the Mt Coot-tha track system. The party will follow the Citriodora Track over the ridges above the Western Freeway to the Botanic Gardens. From there we take Mt Coot-tha Rd to Slaughter Falls Picnic Area, and traverse parkland to the Simpson's Falls Track. We will then ascend the mountain, crossing the falls on a bridge, before branching off to the Eugenia Circuit and then up to the Goldmine Picnic Area. The Litchfield Track will take us to the Summit Lookout, and the Honeyeater Track, which descends gently to Chapel Hill. The group then negotiate a rough track, ending up on Chapel Hill Rd near the Green Hill Reservoir. We will walk through the Reservoir grounds to Russell Tce, then go down the hill, under the freeway, through Moore Park and back to the start. This walk has a mix of graded tracks, fire trails, rough tracks and bitumen. Most reasonably fit people should have no trouble with it. A walking pole would be a good idea for the steep and slippery sections. Don't forget to bring the usual daywalk gear, including a hat, sunscreen, raincoat, lunch and plenty of water. WEDNESDAY 4th AUGUST COFFEE NIGHT SOCIAL Leader: Russ Nelson Ph: 0427 743 534 or russnelson52@outlook.com Meet at: La Stazione at The Gabba, Shop 855 Stanley St, Woolloongabba Opposite where the East Brisbane State School and the Brisbane Cricket Ground meet in Stanley Street Time: 6.00pm Website: https://www.agfg.com.au/restaurant/la-stazione-at-the-gabba-79463 Emerg Off: Russ Ph: Ph: 0427 743 534 Delve into authentic dishes just like Nona makes at this rustic restaurant, where exposed brick, distressed timber floors and trailing greenery set the scene for leisurely dining at white-clothed tables overlooking the hallowed turf. The trail firstly follows Moolabin Ck to its source, then head towards Tarragindi Hill to go up&over to inspect the water reservoir, walk over to Sandy Ck and follow it to its junction with Norman Ck and now follow this one to Buranda. Here, we leave the creeks behind and follow the line of churches through old Woolloongabba via a circuitous route to the Gabba Busway Station. Phew, what a lot to see, walk and take in. I’m exhausted just thinking of it. This walk is flatish with a minor climb up Tarragindi Hill for a short distance – nothing too strenuous if taken slowly – great views from the top. The creek walking is along paths; some through native bushland, some along grassy parkland. The movement can be a bit faster here. After Buranda, you will be going along footpaths; searching for all the old churches in what seems to be a very religious Woolloongabba. Because it was a major port area, a lot of different nationalities arrived hereabouts, stayed, built homes and their national churches – even a cathedral. July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 12 Bally Mountain is a small mountain (489m) in the Gold Coast Hinterland. It is a great little walk and is mainly “off-track”. The summit plateau provides great views of the Gold Coast and hinterland. It is a good “warm up walk” to do before doing Mt Barney for the Barney Mass. We will start the walk at the end of Bonogin Road, Bonoggin. [UBD Gold Coast section - Map 77 Ref D3]. The party will approach the summit from the northwest ridge which brings us up to the south side of the summit plateau. Our group will have on the northern shoulder of the summit for an early lunch The views from the shoulder are better than the summit which is “treed in”. After lunch we will go down the ridge on the western side. Again, there is some scrambling and some exposure. We continue the descent on the obvious ridge before joining an old forestry road which brings us back to our cars. As far as I’m aware it has only been climbed by the Club twice before in June 2012 and October 2014. Those on the 17/06/2012 walk were Phil Murray, Nampech Wuthapanich, John & Thomas Carter, Justin Tobin, Peter Constable and Kerrianne Pearce. Those on the 11-10-2014 walk were Michael Simpson, Karen Franklin, Paul Evans, Terry Silk, Gerry Burges Russell Jones, Louise Jones, Siew Lau, Justin Tobin, Alan Cox and Blair Koppen. If there is any rain around it will be modified or postponed because of potentially slippery conditions. Also, I recommend you bring walking poles and riggers gloves. Please bring the usual equipment for a hardish day walk, water, food, etc. and a warm jacket and beanie. Please note the preferred route to the summit plateau via Little Bally Mountain and the saddle is no longer allowed due to blatant disregard by trespassers of the landowner’s property rights and the landowners have very firmly requested that the bushwalking clubs don’t trespass. Phil WEDNESDAY 11th AUGUST Mt BARNEY MASS DAYWALK Leader: Terry Silk Ph: 3355 9765 Meet at: St. Brigid’s Car Park, Red Hill Time: 5.00am Cost: $20 Grade: M77 Web: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/-28.2905/152.7115 Location: Southwest of Brisbane, near the NSW border Emerg Off: Graham Glasse Ph 3371 9623 The Exhibition Wednesday Mt. Barney Daywalk would have to be the hardest daywalk that the Club does, but, with the added bonus that you get to celebrate a Mass in the fresh mountain air. The track up the South Ridge (Peasants) has become very eroded and, therefore, more difficult. Most of the first hour is along a dirt road before you begin a steep ascent. The walk to the secret Mass site in the saddle between East and West Peaks takes about five hours. After Mass, we descend via the same route which takes about four hours. For safety reasons it is important that we keep the group together, which means that we can only travel as fast as the slowest walker. It is also very important that you have at least 2 litres of water and a torch. Some members are staying overnight at Larkins Mt Barney Lodge, on the Tuesday & Wednesday evenings. The places booked by them are all taken. If you wish to stay overnight, you will need to contact Larkins yourself: on https://www.mtbarneylodge.com.au/contact/ or Ph: 5544 3233. This is only for the fittest walkers, and you must be comfortable with heights on exposed rock. Ropes will probably be used to get up some sections, so if you have a harness then bring it. We will be going up Logan’s Ridge to East Peak, meeting the others for the Mass and lunch, and then descending with the rest of the group down South (Peasants) Ridge. The walk from Yellow Pinch to the top of East Peak should take about 5 to 6 hours. The walk down from the Mass site back to Yellow Pinch generally takes 3 to 4 hours. Equipment needed is 2 litres of water, jackets and layers that are warm, waterproof and windproof, a good torch, first aid kit and a harness if you have it. Gaters are also recommended. Because of the exposed rock, this walk will only go ahead if the weather is suitable. Michael Wood & John Carter SATURDAY 14th AUGUST THORNTON – Mt ZAHEL CIRCUIT DAYWALK Leader: Khaleel Petrus Ph: 0413 314 443 Meet at: St Brigid's Car Park, Red Hill Time: 6:30am Cost: $2 Grade: M55 Location: Thornton Web: https://www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/route/4d25983b-6d0a-4912-8b25- f5770aaecaa1/?layer=QTopoMapService Emerg. We will drive (1½hr) at 6:30am from Red Hill to the start of the walk at the end of Main Camp Creek Rd, where Spicers Retreats has installed a brand-new toilet block.
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 14 We should start the walk at 8:30am with a fairly gentle ascent of 180m in about 1.6km. This is followed by a flat terrain of overgrown grass for about 1km. Then the real ascent starts from 540m to 880m in about 2km via a zig- zagged mostly unmaintained 4WD road to reach the top of the first peak; halfway to the top we will depart the rough road to commence an unmaintained foot track; we need to keep good, opened eyes as the track could easily be lost. At the first peak, we will stop for morning tea to enjoy the stunning views of surrounding mountains. The next 1.4km is through the saddle connecting the peak with the top of Mt Zahel. It will take us good time to arrive to the peak where will stop for lunch and enjoy the beautiful views despite some blockage by some trees on top of Zahel. The we will commence our steep descent of 1.5km from 860m to 310m followed by mostly road bashing of 5km back to the car park and complete the circuit. There is some rock scrambling on the way up and down, some scungy patches and some exposure spots. Please wear long pants, long sleeve shirts and gloves. Bring the usual day pack. In the big dome, they have shows where lights are beamed on the ceiling to represent the night-time sky to create a story. It could be showing us the Constellations, Passport to the Universe, Dark Matter, Worlds Beyond Earth for example. Apart from the “Dome Show”, there are static displays in the halls and exhibition room. Come along to investigate the universe, and to support the Planetarium which is always being threatened with closure because it appears to be forgotten. Stay for lunch at The Garden Café. And there are the Botanic Gardens to have a look at if we want. How To Book The Show: You will need to book your own ticket to the show, go to: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things- to-see-and-do/council-venues-and-precincts/sir-thomas-brisbane-planetarium/sir-thomas- brisbane-planetarium-events AND in “Show schedule” look for: “For the enjoyment of audiences, the following programs are not recommended for children under six years of age”, you will see a list of “shows” as a blue hot-link. If you click on a show, it will tell you the dates and times that show is on. Once you click on the day & time, you will go to the booking page and will be able to book.
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 15 However, only July shows are up on the web – you will have to wait for August before you see what’s on in that month. Once they are up on the web, I will have to choose on for us to see and let the nominee know. Nominate to me, and I will get back to you with what show we will be seeing. Whooo, this is a lot of creek! Our path takes us out to the headwaters of Warick Ck, so from here on it is all downhill. Yes, Downhill. Once at Carindale Shopping Centre, the path takes us up over the hill opposite the Shops, and up Old Cleveland Rd to the old Belmont Tram Terminus. To go home again, many buses head to Buranda and the City. It will be a bit difficult to get back to the start – use Uber or a Taxi. FRIDAY 20th AUGUST CAXTON HOTEL JOHN TOOHEY SOCIETY Leader: Karen Franklin Ph: 0417 718 591. Meet at: 38 Caxton Street, Petrie Terrace. Time: From 4pm till 8ish. What For: A chat, a meal and a drink. As it is a hotel you all know what to expect. A large range of beers, wines and soft drinks as well as the usual pub grub. The hotel is very central and easily accessible by most forms of transport. Unfortunately, I won’t be there as we need to travel to Melbourne. Now it is time to know it better. This will be a compact Stroll, staying in a small area but covering a lot of streets within that area. These suburbs have a lot of classy old houses, lovely gardens, palms & ferns, as well as hills and gullies. This part of Brisbane is not flat; rather I would say “undulating”. At only 8km, you will have time enough to explore and examine the solid 30’s homes. They certainly built them ornate in those days. One highlight will be the Tarragindi Hill Reservoir – great views over to the southwest from here. This Stroll will link up those areas you have driven through the years by zipping along those back streets, but never been able to link them up as a whole. . The start & finish are at the same location, so driving is an option – just find a spot not on Ipswich Rd. Please join me on this adventure through “old” suburbia. He puts a lot of effort into preparing for his walks. This is a circuit walk right around the edge of the lake. Be warned, there are some ups & downs along the way since the track does not always keep the water in sight. There is even a long climb or two up a slope. Not too difficult overall at 18km. Montville is not all shopping; there is scenery, history, sightseeing, gallery-viewing, window-shopping, coffee- drinking - AND shopping! This popular Sunshine Coast Hinterland town is a very attractive place for Retail Therapy, not only because it’s set up high on a ridge with great views and fresh mountain air, but also because it’s surrounded by lush cool green rainforest. It has a range of boutiques, craft shops and cafes which attract a good crowd every weekend, so there’s plenty of people-watching to do, too. Come with us to experience the unique atmosphere of this quaint town – unlike anything we have here in old Brisbane Town. You can come alone, but why not contact a friend to arrange to go together, for company on the 90- minute drive there and back? Give me a ring to nominate, especially if you do not want to drive alone, as I can try to organise something for you. It replaces the Currumbin walk which will be held over until 2022. - The Shepherd’s Walk 17th July is cancelled – due to covid problems. The expectation is that the walk may not be offered again due to property access issues and some insurance and admin problems. - Matt Palmer’s Sundown trip (24 & 25th July) is rescheduled to 18th/19th September as Matt will be in Cairns on the original date. - Minyon Falls Track is closed and the Evans Head walk we be offered as a daywalk on 24 th October but walkers are free to travel down the night before and stay at the caravan park. July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 21 The Barney Mass is an enduring tradition in the Club of having a Mass on top of a mountain. Last year we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Mass at Larkins campground. The Barney Mass this year will be on top and there should be at least 2 walks going out, the hard one up Logans Ridge and the medium/hard one going up Peasants Ridge, plus there could be a “granny walk” of doing the Cronan’s Creek walk along the flatlands. If you want to stay the night before the walk, please contact Larkin’s Mt Barney Lodge on https://www.mtbarneylodge.com.au/contact/ or Ph: 5544 3233. The campsites are about $16 per night. WEB UPDATE I would love to receive any more feedback from the members and what they want to see in the new version of the website - Khaleel, Ph: 3375 6976 Or khaleel.petrus@gmail.com PAST EVENTS DRAWING DAY SUNDAY 18th APRIL SOCIAL I had three people for the Drawing Day. I originally planned some new things for the day but, since all my participants were first timers, I decided to do a variation of my usual introductory exercises. The first was to do drawings on a large sheet of paper at an easel while standing. Ideally this loosens up the act of drawing and gets people to use a lot more of their body than just their hands. The next drawings were at a smaller scale and done sitting down. I introduced the concepts of contour drawing and considered contour. We had a morning tea break and relaxed and yakked. By 1.30pm everybody was ready to finish after all the intense concentration and we called it a day. Everybody worked quite hard and really engaged with some unfamiliar tasks and concepts and seemed to get something out of it. Thank you to Andrea, Antonia and Paula for coming and for your enthusiastic participation. Iain. JTS – STONE AND WOOD BREWERY
July 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 23 FRIDAY 21st MAY SOCIAL Eight Club members gathered at the heritage-listed Stone and Wood Brewery, Bridge St, Fortitude Valley on a fine and cool evening. This was the first time a JTS had been held at this venue. The brewery is located adjacent to the northern rail lines and the building was once an ice factory. The brewery offers a good range of craft beers on tap, some of which are brewed on site. The drinks menu is constantly changing as new brews are added. A limited food menu is provided by William Wallace Catering. The noise level was a little uncomfortable, a consequence of a combination of loud music and a large number of patrons. Thanks to Jan & Russ, Liz, Michele & Greg, Cath & Mike for joining me at this social. Graham BRISBANE VALLEY RAIL TRAIL (BVRT) 13th to 19th JUNE EXTENDED WALK The Trail follows the rail line from Ipswich up the Brisbane River valley to Yarraman. It was built in the late 19th/early 20th century and the last trains ran in the late 20th century. The first section of the BVRT between Fernvale and Lowood, a modest 8km, was opened in 2003 and the last section, Toogoolawah to Moore, was opened in 2008. The whole BVRT is now 161km which makes it the longest rail trail in Australia. Our plan was to complete the trail in 7 days starting at the high point in Yarraman and ending at Wulkuraka, just west of Ipswich. As a result, we walked “downhill” all the way. Our strategy was based on moving our luggage in cars rather than carrying it on our backs. As a result, organising car shuffles required some careful planning. Our core group was 12 people and 3 cars. We began on Sunday 13th June leaving Brisbane at 6.30am, and we travelled by different routes to our meeting point at Moore. By the way, Moore does not have any accommodation or petrol but does have 3 coffee shops. We drove directly to the starting point in Yarraman Station Park and therefore missed the sights of Yarraman. We started walking by 9.15am which was good timing. We soon found ourselves in pastoral country which is part of the South Burnett Region and we arrived at Blackbutt in the late afternoon. Along the way we met 4 walkers who were doing the BVRT over 8 days carrying all their gear on their backs. Later that night we had dinner at the same location but the “4” ordered steak before us and depleted the supply of steak at the Bistro in Blackbutt. However, we enjoyed their company. As the distance from Blackbutt to Linville, our next destination, was just 24km, we gathered at our motel at 8.00am to load the cars with our luggage. This was the beginning of our learning experience in optimising our morning departure strategy. So, we set off for Benarkin, walking through forest rather than open grazing land. We were now in the Toowoomba Region. At Benarkin we had morning tea and noted that there was a free camping area where you pay for extras such as showers. Shortly after leaving Benarkin, we stopped shadowing the Brisbane Valley Highway and followed a much gentler route through Benarkin State Forest, with lunch at McNamara’s Camp. East of McNamara’s Camp the trail follows Blackbutt Creek and the valley opens up to spectacular valley views. This was a very scenic afternoon. We arrived at Linville and its only hotel. Apparently, this hotel does a roaring trade on weekends and is much quieter during the week. We, and the 4 we met the previous day, filled the
