GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT JAPAN Japan is an island country in East Asia located in the Pacific Ocean off the eastern coast of the Asian continent. The country’s name means "origin of the sun" and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun". It consists of an archipelago made up of almost 7000 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about 97% of Japan's land area and are often referred to as home islands. The country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions. The population of 127 million is the world's tenth largest, of which 98% are ethnic Japanese with 90% of people living in cities & 9% in the countryside. Almost 14 million people live in Tokyo, the capital of Japan & the Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world with over 38 million people. The majority of people who claim to be religious follow Shintoism or Buddhism but there is complete religious freedom in Japan and a number of minority faiths are also represented. Archaeological research indicates that Japan was inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period (10,000 – 50,000 years ago). The first written mention of Japan is in Chinese history texts from the first century AD. Influence from other regions, mainly China, followed by periods of isolation, particularly from Western Europe, has characterised Japan's history. From the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shōguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor. Japan entered into a long period of isolation in the early 17th century which was ended in 1853 when a United States fleet pressured Japan to open to the West. After nearly two decades of internal conflict and insurrection, the Imperial Court regained its political power in 1868 through the help of several clans from Chōshū and Satsuma and the Empire of Japan was established. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, victories in the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War and World War I allowed Japan to expand its empire during a period of increasing militarism. The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded into part of WWII in 1941 which came to an end in 1945 following the Japanese surrender. Since adopting its revised constitution in 1947, during the occupation by the Supreme Commander for Allied Powers, the sovereign state of Japan has maintained a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy with an Emperor and an elected legislature called the National Diet. The current Prime Minister is Shinzō Abe, who is also Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. Japan is a member of ASEAN, the UN, OECD, G7, G8, and G20. It is considered a great power and its economy is the world's third-largest by GDP. It is the world's fourth-largest exporter and importer. Japan benefits from a highly skilled and educated workforce & has one of the world's highest proportion of citizens with a tertiary degree. Although it has officially renounced its right to declare war, Japan maintains a modern military force. It has the world's eighth-largest military budget used for self-defense and peacekeeping roles & is ranked as the world's fourth most- powerful military country in 2015. 7
Japan is a highly developed country with a very high standard of living and Human Development Index. Its population enjoys the highest life expectancy and third lowest infant mortality rate in the world, but is experiencing issues due to an aging population and low birthrate. Japan is renowned for its historical and extensive cinema, influential music industry, anime, video gaming, rich cuisine and its major contributions to science and modern technology. To learn more about Japan, visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan VISAS & PASSPORTS Australia & New Zealand have a visa waiver agreement with Japan. This means that nationals of both countries can visit for tourist purposes and stay for up to 90 days as long as we hold a passport which remains valid during our stay and that we do not receive any income while there. MONEY As of April 2020 : AUD$1 = 69Japanese Yen 1 JPY = AUD$0.015 We strongly recommend that you CHANGE YOUR MONEY INTO YEN BEFORE ARRIVING IN JAPAN - the equivalent of AUD$750 in CASH per person should be sufficient to cover most of your expenses. Please note that some Japanese merchants, restaurants & hotels do not accept credit cards. Also, changing money can be difficult & ATM machines that are compatible with foreign credit cards or debit cards can be scarce in some rural areas. This is changing now, but to avoid any possible problems, you may wish to plan to pay for out-of-pocket expenses using small denominations of local currency. INSURANCE Travel insurance is compulsory. We recommend you purchase your policy at the time of booking your tour as deposits are non-refundable. Please provide us with copies of your insurance policy in advance. Check your policy’s coverage for such items as unexpected cancellation, consequential damages, medical evacuation, age and pre-existing conditions. HEALTH & INOCULATIONS Participants need to have a good level of fitness and be able to walk 3kms and climb steps unassisted. If you usually use a fold-up alpine stick when walking longer distances, please bring it along. Please advise us of any medical conditions, allergies or special requirements on your booking form. If you have any serious pre-existing conditions, we may ask you for a medical certificate. In light of the corona pandemic, for your own peace of mind we recommend you continue to wash & sanitize your hands regularly, maintain a sensible social distance & wear a mask if desired. Although no specific inoculations are required for entry, please consult your GP about any personal medications you may require and to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date. ETIQUETTE Etiquette is very important in Japan. For example, should you use soap in a traditional Japanese bath? As a visitor, when should you bow? Is it considered impolite to eat all the food on your plate? For a quick guide to Japanese etiquette, visit https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e622.html 8
