Guadalcanal. During the interwar period, the support of USMC amphibious
operations became a key element of Marine aviation doctrine, and the
small force gradually grew. It was over Guadalcanal that Joe Foss emerged

In the 44 months between December 1941 and August 1945, the Pacific

the Roman general Stilicho and Alaric, king of the Visigoths.

It took little more than a single generation for the 800-year-old Roman
Empire to fall. In those critical decades, while Christians and pagans,

dwindling scraps of power, two men – former comrades on the battlefield

At the Gates of Rome tells this story through the eyes of the two men who
both fought valiantly to prevent Rome’s downfall before one was ultimately
forced to abandon its cause. Weaving Ancient Roman, Greek and Byzantine
accounts of Stilicho and Alaric into a single compelling historic epic, this
is a sweeping saga of the dying days of Rome.

A remarkable new study on the Battle of Crécy, a decisive English victory
over the French that changed the course of the Hundred Years War.

The Battle of Crécy in 1346 is one the most famous and widely studied
military engagements in history. The repercussions of this battle – in
which England’s King Edward III decisively defeated a far larger French
army – were felt for hundreds of years, and the exploits of those fighting
reached the status of legend. Yet groundbreaking research has shown that

fieldwork to help unlock what was arguably the battle’s greatest secret:

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive in the West.

    No Wider War
A History of the Vietnam War Volume 2: 1965–75

    Sergio Miller

No Wider War is the second volume of a two-part exploration of America’s involvement in Indochina from the
end of World War II to the Fall of Saigon. Following on from the first volume, In Good Faith, which told the
story from the Japanese surrender in 1945 through America’s involvement in the French Indochina War and
the initial advisory missions that followed, it traces the story of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War
from the first Marines landing at Da Nang in 1965, through the traumatic Tet Offensive of 1968. It details
the gradual ‘Vietnamization’ of the war that followed, culminating with the withdrawal of American forces
and the final loss of the South in 1975.

Drawing on the latest research, unavailable to the authors of the classic Vietnam histories, including
recently declassified top secret National Security Agency material, Sergio Miller examines in depth both the
events and the key figures of the conflict to present a masterful narrative of America’s most divisive war.

In the spring of 1982, Argentinian forces invaded the Falkland Islands,
a remote British territory in the South Atlantic. This led to a bitter 10-week war.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. With titles ranging from Abandon Ship to
Cold War Fleet, our list provides insights into one of the pivotal events of 20th-century British history.

P-51B/C Mustang
Northwest Europe 1943–44

Author: Chris Bucholtz Illustrators: Gareth Hector, Jim Laurier & Tim Brown

Luftwaffe Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring admitted that the appearance of long-range Mustangs over
Berlin spelled the end of the Jagdwaffe’s ability to defeat American daylight bombing. But the Mustang
was far more than an escort – it was a deadly hunter that could out-perform nearly every German fighter
when it was introduced into combat. Entering the war in Europe in December 1943, P-51Bs and P-51Cs
had advantages over German Bf 109s and Fw 190s in respect to the altitude they could reach, their rate
of climb and top speed. Initially tapped for close bomber escort, Mustangs were quickly turned loose to
range ahead of the bomber stream in order to challenge German fighters before they could assemble to
engage the bombers en masse.
