The Gathering PRELUDE How Firm a Foundation Arr. D. Sommerville Brass Quintet GREETING & GOOD NEWS Pastor Kellen Smith CALL TO WORSHIP (1 Corinthians 1:4-9) Pastor: I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus. People: That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of knowledge, in the same way that the testimony about Christ was confirmed with you. Pastor: The result is that you aren’t missing any spiritual gift while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also confirm your testimony about Christ until the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. People: God is faithful, and you were called by him to partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
HYMN The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune (All People That on Earth Do Dwell) Arr. Vaughan Williams All: All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. Choir: O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do. For why? The Lord our God is good; His mercy is forever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. All: To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore. Amen. The Confession CALL TO CONFESSION Pastor Greg Anderson PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, we confess that we are quick to judge and slow to pray. We have been insensitive to your invitation to meet and speak daily with you. As a people, we have not lived for your best. Forgive us for not acting in unison with your kingdom purposes. By your grace, set us toward your paths of hope and healing. Transform us by the power of your holy word and your indwelling word, revealed to us as Christ, through whom we pray. Please continue in silent prayer for confession of personal matters.
DECLARATION OF GOD’S PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. The Word ANTHEM Lauda Anima by Mark Andrews Westminster Choir Dan Sommerville, director Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Evermore his praises sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King! Fatherlike he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely yet his mercy flows. Angels in the height adore him! Ye behold him face to face; Saints triumphant bow before him! Gathered in from every race. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace. Amen. HYMN 824 There is a Place of Quiet Rest

CHURCH LIFE January 30, 2022 PRACTICING SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES TODAY’S MESSAGE “Airplane Mode: Practicing Spiritual Disciplines” 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. We live in a noisy world. The 24-hour news cycle is relentless. Even when alone, we’re bombarded with texts, emails, and social media messages. The Lord’s invitation to seek solitude and silence isn’t only about finding a quiet place, it’s also about discovering the gift of removing ourselves from the cacophony of messages to find our rest in God. Drawing from the life of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, this series extends that invitation at four critical life junctures: a big decision, a big loss, a big job, and a big change. At each point, a time of silence, solitude, and prayer in God’s presence can heal us of the past and prepare us for our futures. Today: “A Big Change” Galatians 1:11-17 The Apostle Paul, upon receiving his call to ministry, travels to Arabia to affirm his new identity in Christ. We’ll consider how setting aside a time and place apart before embarking upon any life change has the power to renew and prepare us for whatever God has in store. firstpreswheaton.org/livestream
