Don’t Get Tippy: If young children are in the home, bookshelves and other furniture should be firmly secured with wall brackets to prevent tipping. Paint Safe: Check walls for loose paint. If re-painting, do so in a well-ventilated area and consider VOC-free paint. Childproof, Childproof, Childproof: Check your local library or online for complete lists of childproofing suggestions and see our Virtual Home Safety Tour for more ideas. Areas of particular danger include outlets, appliances, electronics, stairs and windows. Cover Outlets: Cover all unused outlets to prevent children from sticking a finger in the socket. Keep Extinguishers Handy: Place all-purpose fire extinguishers in key locations in your home – the kitchen, bedroom and basement. Be sure to check expiration dates regularly and know how to use them safely. Create a Safe Exit: In addition to alarms and extinguishers, consider an escape ladder if your home has two floors. Keep emergency numbers and contacts readily available by the phone. Go New in the Nursery: Check that all painted cribs, bassinettes and high chairs were made after 1978 to avoid potential lead paint poisoning. Cool Your Jets: Set your water heater below 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid potential burns and to save energy. Put Away Medications: Take medications and medical supplies out of your purse, pockets and drawers, and put them in a cabinet with a child safety lock. A Message from Your Community Manager and Master Board President Continued… PONDS AND FOUNTAINS The fountain located on Countryway Boulevard and Old Memorial Highway will be replaced sometime in January 2021, if not before. The fountain located on Countryway Blvd. and Waters Ave. is waiting for a part. Hopefully with the arrival of 2021 dues, the Board can replace the last two remaining fountains, which give us trouble on a continuing basis. We are very thankful for the elegance that the fountains give to our community. American Eco Systems, our pond company, recommends a Sonar AS treatment to address the continual growth of lilies and spatterdock pond plants, as regular spraying is not keeping the pond plants at bay. This Board is set to move forward with this project during Spring of 2021. During the water line break in mid- December, it was wonderful to hear about how many residents reached out to others in the community to keep them informed. Deeds such as this are what make Countryway a great community to call your home. Some residents do not have a smart phone or a computer, so coming to their aid with important information such as this, is so vital. Due to the impact on our areas water system of potential contamination, the Board posted a sign informing guests and workers not to drink from the water fountains which are located at the pavilion on Waters Ave. for up to 72 hours after the main water break. It turned out that the turn-around-time was less than expected for the use of our household water again. YEARLY AUDIT The 2020 audit proposal from Bashor and Legendre, with whom Countryway has contracted with, will begin on January 10 and will be completed by April 30. Michelle and I would like to thank our Countryway Board of Directors for a great year of service. A big thank you goes out to Jim Sacarello- Vice President; Brian Pille- Treasurer; Courtney Cooper- Secretary; and Erwin Norwood- Director at Large. Each month these residents work very hard each month to make your community a pleasant place to live and one that you are proud of calling your home. Lastly the Board would like to thank, Michelle Welch for her first year of service as our manager. BOARD PROJECTS THAT WERE APPROVED AND COMPLETED IN 2020 Overlay of both parking lots; purchasing of- new tennis court fencing; new benches for the tennis court and for the dog parks; new slat swings and swing mates for the playground; treatment for fire ants at the dog parks; drilling of two new wells; purchase of two new fountains, trimming of all trees on Countryway Blvd to the four corners; trimming of trees on Waters to the four corners; trimming of trees on Country Hollow; putting posts and no parking signs on Old Memorial to designate our boundary lines to deter the parking of cars on our property; and lastly the completion of 3 erosion projects, and 5 culvert projects. It has been a very busy year to say the least! NEXT MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The board meets the third Thursday of each month, with the exception of July and December; therefore, the next meeting is scheduled for January 21, 2021. Coyote Sightings Due to the heightened concern about the coyotes in our area, and recorded sightings of a large black coyote roaming several community residents and board members have reached out to the County for information. The County has provided us with a lot of good information. Please don't start shooting them, or at them. You do not know what may be on the other side, hikers, houses, kids playing, etc. Do's and Don'ts of Urban Coyotes How to live alongside urban coyotes in Hillsborough County. Did you know coyotes are an important part of the landscape in Florida? According to Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC), they help maintain healthy ecosystems by managing populations of rodents, insects, and other small animals. Did you also know that they are very intelligent and adaptable? Their adaptability is why more are being spotted throughout the United States, including in Hillsborough County, in both rural and urban areas. Due to increased sightings in the Tampa Bay area, Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center teamed up with FWC to provide information on how to co-exist with coyotes and curb problems before they become a community issue. Do Keep trash cans secure and put them where coyotes can't get into them Clean up pet food and fallen fruit around your house Protect pets by keeping them in a yard with a fence at least 6 feet high Walk dogs on a short leash Close off crawl spaces under porches and sheds to remove places for them to rest/raise pups Haze coyotes continuously if they are near to scare them off. Learn how to haze by watching the video on the web site noted below. Share tips with neighbors Don't Feed coyotes - it is illegal, and they will lose their fear of humans Run if you see a coyote. Instead, stand your ground and haze them Allow pets to roam freely Walk pets during early morning or evening hours (dusk and dawn) when coyotes are usually the most active Be aware of unusual coyote behavior. Unusual behavior could include a coyote that has lost its fear of humans and is approaching people, chasing joggers and bikers, or attacking leashed pets. To report unusual coyote activity, call the FWC at (863) 648-3200. Additional information is available on the FWC web site www.myfwc.com/coyote. There is also a short video on how to properly Haze a Coyote. THE COUNTRYWAY NEWSLETTER ۩ IKarePublishing.com 11
