IOSH Food & Drink Manufacturing H&S Conference Food & Drink H&S Awards presentation 2nd October 2019 1
WHO ARE WE? We’re a global beverage company with circa 25,000 employees Key Trading/sales offices Manufacturing sites Tea estates Blending Packing facilities
WHAT DID WE DO AND WHY? What? • We developed and integrated a ‘Healthy is Wealthy’ initiative into our Zero Harm strategy! Why? • Early 2018 we reviewed progress against our Zero Harm strategy • We had achieved significant success in improving safety i.e. LTI’s halved, lost time more than halved, evolving ‘Always Safe’ culture – all good stuff! • Focus had, quite rightly, been on safety; much less focus on health • 21st Century living and 4th Industrial Revolution working are bringing increasing physical and mental wellbeing challenges across the world • Ongoing ‘Engagement’ challenges with grass root employees • Those in greatest need/at greatest risk
HOW DID WE GO ABOUT IT? Commitment & Consultation: • Obtained the required commitment from senior management • We consulted across the business on what ‘health is wealth’ might look like! Six opportunities for improvement identified: 1. Physical activity 2. Physical wellbeing 3. Mental wellbeing 4. Medical interventions 5. Employee support 6. Community involvement
5. EMPLOYEE SUPPORT
6. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
WHAT DIFFERENCE DID IT MAKE? Measuring ‘health & wellbeing’ is challenging – Not everything that is counted counts - not everything that counts can be counted! Albert Einstein • Voluntary take up of physical exercise opportunities within work time >90%, with significant number progressing into more exercise in own time • There has been around an 11% increase in employees being referred to GP’s as a result of increased medical interventions • There has been a significant decrease in the number of cases of children reporting nutritional disorders in Kenya following our educational campaign • Attendance at mental health workshops has been 100% (not surprising in work time) and an increase in people requested support • We are recording a reduction in sickness absence of around 7%, though not possible to say it’s directly related • Low turnover – good staff retention – good company to work for! ALL the feedback has been incredibly positive! People feel valued & motivated. Improved morale and teamwork. Enhanced employee engagement – where it’s needed!
TAKE AWAYS………. • Whilst difficult to measure quantitively the benefits are very visible, very quickly • Financial cost is minimal – all that I’ve mentioned cost less than £10k, and there IS a financial return • However, the cost in time and resources is significant • Senior management commitment is essential, visible senior management commitment is immeasurable! With the physical and mental health challenges that exist today the question is not “should we?” but “can we afford not to?” EMPLOYEES THAT ARE HAPPY, HEALTHY AND HERE!
NEXT STEPS……………….
