PAYMENTS AND Letter of Offer outlines course fee payments, and payment
agreement and fee instalments. Fee instalments are usually
  ENROLMENTS
due each term; 1 term equals 8 to 12 weeks (depending on
the length of the course). In case wherein Keystone College
accept partial payment for the first instalment, for issuance
of a CoE, learners are required to ensure the balance of the
payment, as outlined above is made by the due date. A charge
of $250 penalty applies if the first instalment is not paid prior
to commencement. Keystone College reserves the right to
recuperate unpaid fees owed to Keystone College and to pass
on any debt collection fee to learner.

Where learner enrolment has been cancelled and there
is an outstanding debt, Keystone College may approach
debt collection agencies and/or credit bureau to recover
outstanding debts. Keystone College will not release
any Awards/Testamurs (certification) to learner until all
outstanding course fees have been paid. All commencing
learners are required to pay fees at the time or after
accepting course offer. Continuing learners’ fees must be paid
by the due date specified on invoice. Failure to comply with
the required payment date may result in the termination of
offer or enrolment and cancellation of Enrolment. Fees and
charges are current as at the time of publication but may be
changed by Keystone College on an annual basis as part of
                 the review process.

ACADEMIC Learners can contact Support Staff or relevant trainers to
discuss academic, attendance, or other issues relevant to
       CONDUCT
studying at Keystone College at any time. Support staff will
provide advice and guidance, or referral, where required. In
the event that a learner’s needs exceed the capacity of the

can offer, they will be referred to an appropriate external
agency. Information regarding support agencies, resources
and services may be sourced online. Keystone College staff
members will assist learners to source appropriate support.

staff will pursue any reasonable means within their ability
to assist learners in achieving the required competency

Housing Options
for Students
For their first few months of living in Canada. Living
with a host family helps you practice English daily
and learn about different cultures and lifestyles. Most
host families are immigrants who can share their
experiences with you.

Responsibilities while living in homestay usually include:
 • Pay your rent on time
 • Keep your bedroom/living space clean
 • Keep the washroom organised, especially if sharing with the host family
     or other students
 • Do your own laundry
 • Pay for any long distance phone calls you make from the homestay
     family’s phone

Additionally, it is important to:
 • Respect the rules and routines of the family
 • Let them know when you won’t be home for dinner, or if you’ll be late for
     any appointments with them
 • Practice English, even if your host family speaks the same language as
     you
 • Ask permission before inviting friends over
 • Ask permission to use the telephone

Remember: In homestay, communication is your key to comfort and success.
If you have any problems with your host family, talk to them. Share your
point of view politely! If you don’t feel comfortable doing so, talk to you
Homestay Program Coordinator.

Renting your own place

If you want to rent your own place, the easiest way to look for your new
home is by using online websites. Be aware that unless the advertisement/
posting says differently, you are renting from the home owner (landlord), not
a company.

Some popular websites to find housing include:
Craigslist vancouver.en.craigslist.ca
Apartments In Vancouver apartments-in-vancouver.com
Rents Line rentsline.com
Rent BC rentbc.com

When searching through postings/advertisements for housing and
apartments, be aware of:
 • Rent fee (per month)
 • Lease (one-year, six-month, month by month, etc)
 • Photographs that CLEARLY show the space/condition
 • Location
 • Detailed written information about the place, size, and type
 • Detailed written information about the amenities (stove, fridge,
dishwasher, laundry, etc) and if they are included in the rental price
 • Exactly what the rent covers (water, heat, internet, cable tv, etc)

All About
Medical
Insurance
36
In Canada, health care can be very expensive if you are
not covered with proper medical insurance. Keystone
College requires that all international students have
basic insurance and extended health insurance for the
duration of your studies.

Your first three months
If you have just arrived in British Columbia (BC), you will require private
medical insurance for your first three months. You may register for private
medical insurance through the Keystone College International Office. The
rate for the private insurance is $1.55 per day (fee subject to change).

After three months
International students will qualify for the British Columbia Medical Services
Plan (MSP) after living in BC for 3 months. The monthly costs for MSP
coverage are (fees subject to change):
 • $72.00 for one person
 • $130.50 for a family of two
 • $144.00 for a family of three or more
International students must also have a valid study permit to qualify for
MSP. Your BC Services Card (Care Card) will expire on the same date as your
study permit. When you receive a new study permit, you must send a copy of
your study permit to the MSP office to extend your BC Services/Care Card.
Otherwise, your medical insurance will no longer be valid.

MSP covers the cost of basic medical care within BC and Canada including
most physician and hospital services.

The Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides the following benefits:
 • medically required services provided by a physician enrolled with MSP;
 • maternity care provided by a physician or a midwife;
 • diagnostic services, including x-rays and laboratory services provided at
approved diagnostic facilities when ordered by a registered physician,
   midwife, podiatrist, dental surgeon or oral surgeon;
 • dental and oral surgery, when required to be performed in a hospital

PHARMACARE What is BC Fair PharmaCare?
PROGRAM Fair PharmaCare is a provincial income-based program,
designed to provide fair access to coverage for prescription
drugs - the lower your income, the more assistance the
government will provide toward your eligible drug costs.
For example, if your net income from two years ago was
$15,000 or less and you have registered for Fair PharmaCare,
you will have 70% of your eligible prescription drug costs
covered immediately, with no deductible, and 100% of your
prescription drug costs covered after $300.

This covers the majority of the prescription drugs commonly
claimed by UVSS students. If your drug is not covered, you can
apply for a Drug Exception reimbursement.

How does it work for B.C. residents?
Once you register, Fair PharamaCare coverage will kick
in once you’ve reached your assigned deductible that Fair
PharmaCare calculates based on your income tax data from
two years ago. In the meantime, your UVSS Health Plan
covers your prescription drug costs (up to 80% per policy
             year).

Once you have reached your deductible, the majority of
your prescription drug costs will be paid by Fair Pharmacare
instead of your UVSS Plan, allowing the UVSS to allocate
coverage to other areas such as vision and dental care.

Fair PharmaCare will also assign a maximum amount of
coverage per policy year, based on your income. Once your
maximum reached, Fair PharmaCare will cover 100% of
the cost of your prescription drugs. For most students, with
incomes under $25,000, the maximum will be between $300
             and $750.

GOVERNMENT The BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) is
HEALTH CARE
PROGRAM the provincial government program that
              provides basic medical benefits.

Everyone living in British Columbia for more than six months
is required to enrol in MSP (except students with existing
coverage from another Canadian province or territory).

If you come to British Columbia without coverage under
MSP or another provincial or territorial health plan and will
be here for six months or longer, you should apply for MSP
immediately upon your arrival. As there is a three-month
waiting period before MSP coverage will start, you must
ensure you have basic health insurance for those first three
months in British Columbia. Canadian citizens or permanent
residents are advised to join the Global Campus Health
Plan during that three-month MSP waiting period.

              ABORIGINAL STUDENTS
If you are a Status Indian, it is recommended that you also
have your Status Card with you when accessing health or
medical services, in addition to the health card (e.g., Care
Card) from your home province or territory.

              DOMESTIC STUDENTS
Canadian students from other provinces or territories can
remain under their home province or territory health plan as
              long as they remain students.

              INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
If you are an international student or exchange student, you
will be automatically enrolled in iMED, a temporary health
insurance that provides you with basic coverage during the
              three-month waiting period for MSP.

units of competency, a complete analysis will be undertaken to determine the equivalence
of the study completed with the relevant units or modules before granting any credit.
Credit transfer (Internal Credit transfer) also applies to units of competency completed

                              WRITING TIPS
When preparing your resume, make sure it’s SHARP:

                              SUCCINCT
The writing in your resume should be concise, succinct, and to the point. Use proper
grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your writing.

                              HONEST
You resume needs to be factually accurate, including dates of employment, education
completed, job titles, and skills possessed.

                              ATTRACTIVE
Your resume should be visually appealing to the eye. Make sure it is neat, organised, and
consistent. Ensure you use enough “white space” by setting your margins at .5” or greater
and providing ample space between sections.

                              RIGHT
A resume should reflect who you are and your professional experiences. This does not
                              mean it should be laden with unnecessary graphics or inappropriate personal information;
it means you should feel comfortable using it to represent yourself as a candidate.

                              PERTINENT
Your resume and the way it is organised should be relevant to the position. For example,
you may need to make adjustments to your resume when applying for a position as an
accountant versus a position as a project manager.
