4 www.smallbusinessassociation.com.au Official Welcome There are periods throughout history when the world experiences an event so powerful that things do not remain the same. It becomes a time for big, bold, new ideas. Such a time arrived with the coronavirus. The status quo cannot remain the same and it is now time for change. As a global economy, Australia and other nations can enter the Golden Age. History shows it is small business that led a nation out of an economic downturn. Rebuilding shattered economies is not from the top down but rather from the bottom up. The SBAA is acknowledged as a premium peak body representing 60,000 individual small businesses plus another 38 industry partners whose membership totals hundreds of thousands. The SBAA strives to repre- sent the needs of all small businesses, and to advocate for the small business sector to be at the forefront of Australian Government Policy. There are numerous summits and conferences, so, what is special about the SBAA Bi-Annual International Small Business Summit in 2021? The SBAA Summit is not your usual conference talk fest but is a working summit. It will provide a road map for small business post coronavirus and find solutions to some of the impediments facing small business in the areas of technology, manufacturing, industrial relations, trade, finance, taxation, education and training and a section on women in business. At the conclusion of the Summit, a communique will be issued, and a Report will be prepared for presentation to government. I welcome you to our Summit where we will set the agenda for a sustainable small business future.
www.smallbusinessassociation.com.au 5 Purpose of the Summit 96-99.7% of all businesses in contemporary economies are small businesses meaning they make up the bulk of businesses. They are the economy. The purpose of the Summit is to lay the foundations for good policies including new ideas, best business practices and ease of doing business for small businesses particularly doing trade with global economies. This high-level summit is set to become a mini APEC/ASEAN having the support of a number of organisations and our global partners. It will set the tone and create opportunities for the small business sector domestical- ly and globally. It will forge relationships and produce an environment whereby small business can compete and prosper. The Small Business Charter of Australia: The Small Business Charter of Australia is an overarching document that incorporates all three levels of gov- ernment across all States and Territories. It seeks to ensure that all governments and government agencies at all levels collaborate together and think ‘Small Business First’. The SBAA aims to utilize the charter as a roadmap for our policy-making at the 2021 summit – to ensure small business matters are made a priority for the Australian Government at a national level. At our 2021 Summit, there will be international participants from the academic and business world and gov- ernment advisers where talks will center on some of the ten pillars of the Charter, small business practices, new ideas, and how both small business and the economy will benefit. MSMEs Australian Statistics (pre coronavirus): • There are approximately 2.4 million actively trading small businesses in 2019. • 96% of businesses in Australia are small businesses. • 88% are micro employing 0-3 staff as per Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). • Approximately 700,000 do not employ staff. • There are 868,248 employing businesses of all sizes. Of all employing businesses, 812,084 were considered small businesses with fewer than 20 employees. • Small business including owners make up more than half of Australia’s workforce engaging up to 7 million. • They produced 57% of Australia’s gross domestic value (GVD) which was generated by businesses between $100,000 and $50 million (NAB survey 2017. • Of the employing businesses, 70% or 608,733 employed between 1 and 4 people whilst only 0.5% or 3,915 employed more than 200 people.
6 www.smallbusinessassociation.com.au Small Business Charter of Australia – Think Small Business First Small businesses are the backbone of the Australian economy. They are a key source of employment and a platform for business innovation. Small businesses are also the most sensitive to changes and the first to suffer if weighed down with excessive bureaucracy, changing rules, draconian regulation and unfair competition. Governments and policy makers need to adopt a more sophisticated approach towards small business by providing an economic plan for small business. Such plans need to identify strategic priorities and create opportunities for global economic sustainability for Australian small businesses. The ten pillars form the framework for the SBAA Small Business Charter.

www.smallbusinessassociation.com.au 9 Message from NAB – Summit Major Sponsor This year’s SBAA International Small Business Summit presents a great opportunity for us to pause and take stock on what has been a momentous 12 months. While every business is on their own journey when it comes to recovering from the pandemic, it’s true that we have seen Australia make a far stron- ger recovery from the economic and health impacts of COVID-19 than any of us would have expected. Our recovery is thanks to the decisive actions by Government, but it is also thanks to the resilience of all Australians and small businesses, who have worked together to create one of the most cohesive COVID responses globally. The challenge now for our small business community is to capitalise on our position as a nation and focus on the next stage. Small business performance is what is driving our recovery from COVID. Small business across Australia can and should now lead the shift from recovery to growth. While there is a lot of attention on the resurgent housing market, as Australia’s biggest business bank, we are also seeing exciting and widespread signs of business growth. Our NAB Business Experts are approving more loans to businesses than before the pandemic. New and increased lending to small businesses is up. Our business surveys have shown business conditions hit record highs. The strength in conditions is evident across all states and industries and business confidence remains well above the average. I see this when I visit customers around the country. They are more confident, and they are looking to expand. Businesses across Australia are now harnessing the new ideas and opportunities they uncovered during 2020 and focusing on growth. Pivot was a great catchphrase in 2020, but this year is all about doubling down on the opportunity. NAB is this year’s major sponsor of the International Small Business Summit and as such I look forward to joining with you to recognise this opportunity and grow those ideas which are set to perform well after the pandemic is over. By Ana Marinkovic NAB Executive General Manager for Small Business
