Digital Color Part 6: The RGB working color space is the basis for processing RGB images and documents as well as the Management exchange with other users. Both areas of application make certain demands of the RGB working color space. Workshop Here, we take a look at the difference types of RGB and their respective characteristics. The role of the RGB working color space A complete color management workflow requires a consistent The RGB working color space is the basis for processing RGB working color RGB images and documents as well as the exchange space – from the with other users. Both areas of application make certain export of camera data through the display on demands of the RGB working color space. the monitor and the output on the printer to the embedding of the working color Image editing space profile in the In image editing it is necessary for equal RGB values to produce a neutral gray. Only then can the user finished file. orientate himself to numerical values and carry out selective color corrections. Furthermore, the RGB working color space should cover the color space of a possible later application. If an RGB working RGB Skin tone test – below are examples of color space is chosen which does not cover the particular color space of a later application, then the how a picture originally captured as sRGB, color saturation for some images will be unnecessarily limited. but not tagged, would appear when opened in different working spaces. File exchange with other users For the file exchange with other users, the profile for the RGB working color space should have sRGB as smaller file size as possible, so that the size of the image file hardly changes after embedding the profile. Furthermore, it is advantageous if the users who exchange digital image data agree on possible one single RGB working color space. No parameters or references from the ICC for RGB working color spaces Many users embed profiles in RGB images as a matter of course and also apply them when opening. Despite this, there is still a lot of RGB data in circulation without a profile, mainly for office and internet applications. In the ICC specifications there are no references for RGB working color spaces or even parameters AdobeRGB for which color space should be used if no profile is embedded. Accordingly there is an uncontrolled growth of references from various organizations and a wide range of settings in application programs. This results in difficult situations, as the next sections show, where even many color management professionals are left in the dark. Fault tolerance It can always occur that in a color management workflow the RGB working color space has not been embedded in the files, or that the receiver does not extract the embedded working color space. In both cases a color shift occurs when the files are opened. The more different the working color spaces are between the sender and receiver of the data, the greater the resulting color shift is. If the sender and receiver coincidentally work in the same or a very similar working color space, the effect ECI-RGB will be less dramatic. To avoid such problems from the start, it is imperative in the use of RGB data to embed ICC profiles in the image data when saving. And the application programs must be so configured that embedded profiles in RGB images are automatically extracted. In the area of office and internet applications, many application programs and browsers are, however, not able to incorporate embedded profiles correctly. sRGB, AdobeRGB, ECI-RGB According to the references of branch organizations as well as the defaults in application programs, the most prevalent RGB working color spaces are sRGB, AdobeRGB and ECI-RGB. The particular This article is an edited extract from Digital Color quirks of these color spaces will be looked at later in further detail. A common attribute of these Management, Principles and Strategies for the color spaces is however that they greatly differ from each other. Standardized Print Production by Jan-Peter Homann. numbers, ISO12647-7 for instance, it does not mean there will be a visual match to the validated proofing standard. The tolerances supplied for these standards are quite wide and there can be quite some visual difference in two supposedly in-spec proofs. Therein lies the problem of changing your proofing media outside the validated ‘system’ certification and therefore risking that your proofs no longer visually match proofs supplied by anyone else. The improvement in proofing standardisation spearheaded by GMG ColorProof has also had an impact on the take up of process control color management in the press room, where printers are now implementing color control systems such as GMG PrintControl and Rapid Check to calibrate press output and print by numbers to achieve a very quick match to the proof. Products such GMG’s InkOptimizer can then uniformly reseparate the CMYK data to allow a much more balanced output for the press run, with gray balance improved, ink savings achieved and better quality overall. The return on investment with this product, due to faster make ready times, more usable print with much less waste as well as the inevitable ink saving, make it an obvious choice in a color controlled press environment. GMG ColorServer, which has been used extremely successfully by many GMG clients over the years for super-accurate automated color conversions, is now really coming of age in term of its versatility. The introduction of version 4.6 and SmartProfiler means that this product can now be integrated easily into production environments where GMG’s 4D color accuracy What is a contract proof and how can today’s digital is required but is not supported directly by the device. solutions provide it and improve it?
