This induction edition of our Enrichment e-prospectus has been curated to inspire you and to showcase the range of activities you can enjoy as a Shrewsbury Colleges Group student. Voluntary Contribution The college requests a voluntary contribution from students to support the provision of a wide range of enrichment and extracurricular activities to help you develop as an individual and increase success with competitive entry to university, employment or higher apprenticeships. The funding from the government makes it increasingly harder for us to provide the range of activities we believe makes a difference to you being successful. The voluntary contribution supports the offer of a wide range of sports, physical activities, health and wellbeing services, Learning Resource Centre extended opening hours during term time and holiday opening to support revision, work experience, guest speakers, specialist workshops, extended IT support so you can Bring Your Own Device, mini bus transport for trips; skills competitions, academic competitions and volunteering opportunities. Yoga Starts on Tuesday 13th October 2020 at YOGA SESSIONS 4.30pm, English Bridge with Faith Page. Meet in the main hall Yoga has been found to improve quality of life, reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression and back pain. It has also been found to lower heart rate and blood pressure. And, perhaps not surprisingly, yoga has been shown to improve fitness, strength and flexibility, according to the alternative medicine centre For more information or to book please email: lewist@shrewsbury.ac.uk Mars Just Play Football Mars Just play Football sessions are coming to Shrewsbury Colleges Group Drop in football sessions Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays on the 3G at London Road (please note: number restrictions and sports bubbles will apply). This Girl Can Swim Sessions The women-only swimming sessions are designed to make you feel more comfortable and confident in the water and by the pool. Beginner? Come on in. Join our DofE Gold Programme! £425 including DofE registration, expedition preparation, three expeditions, access to expedition equipment and support from The Agency team in meeting all elements of your Gold award. Mental Health Awareness Understanding what works to keep us mentally healthy and support those experiencing mental health problems is fundamental to reducing health inequalities. Free courses are available through a new online platform hosted on the gov.uk website, called The Skills Toolkit. The new platform gives people access to free, high-quality digital and numeracy courses to help build up their skills, progress in work and boost their job prospects. These are the skills which are highly valued by employers and sought after in a wide range of jobs. Courses on offer cover a range of levels, from everyday maths and tools for using email and social media more effectively at work to more advanced training. Individuals will be able to access courses helping them to create great online content developed by the University of Leeds and the Institute of Coding, to understand the Fundamentals of Digital Marketing from Google Digital Garage and to learn how to code for data analysis from the Open University. All courses are online and flexible, so people can work through them at their own pace. 34

Your Work Experience Offer All Shrewsbury Colleges Group students have access to a wide range of work experience opportunities, including insight days, shadowing and placements with employers. Our Work Experience programme continues throughout the current pandemic, with employers now offering virtual work experience placements. We work with over 800 employers and arrange over 950 placements a year. All students have an allocated Work Experience Co-ordinator and they will make contact with you in September 2020. 36
Industry Placements • Students on VOCATIONAL Level 3 and Level 2 programmes are invited to apply for an Industry Placement • Industry Placements are high-quality, long-term opportunities with local employers lasting a minimum of 315 hours • If you have an occupationally-relevant part-time job, then talk to us about linking it to your Industry Placement • Financial support for travel is available • Financial support for employers may be available if the costs of providing a student Industry Placement are proving to be a barrier • Placements often lead to employment and apprenticeships when you finish college • Each placement is tailored to your needs • More information will be shared with vocational students in September 37

Brighton and Sussex Medical School Virtual Work Experience This course provides a 'virtual' work experience for those looking to apply to medical school. You will be introduced to the NHS before exploring the roles and skill sets of six different medical specialists. Along the way, you will also consider some of the challenges and wider issues doctors face. Objectives of this course: Understand the organisation of the NHS in terms of primary, secondary and tertiary care Recognise the ways in which patients can access healthcare and how and why patients move through different services in the NHS Become familiar with reflecting on work experience Develop and understanding of the roles of different types of doctor, including GPs, consultants and foundation doctors Appreciate the ways that a doctor and other healthcare professionals can manage patients Consider the typical training pathways and timelines in common branches of medicine Identify the most important skills and qualities that doctors should possess and be developing throughout their career, and give examples of why these are so important Consider the biggest present and future challenges faced by the NHS Stimulate thinking into the wider considerations surrounding modern medicine, including politics, law and ethics You can sign up for the virtual work experience programme here and please advise Nichola Mannering in the Work Experience team when you have both registered for and completed the course. 39
