Intent At Coop Academy Brownhill School, we strongly believe that, as a core subject, Science holds a place at the heart of our curriculum. We feel that the knowledge and skills in science should be progressive and prepare the children for life beyond our school. All children deserve the best chance for success in their future education and employability, therefore the skills we teach will not only reflect the National Curriculum, but the skills essential in our ever-changing world and diverse society. The teaching of Science at Coop Academy Brownhill offers children opportunities to: • Sort, group, compare, classify and identify • Collaborate with others to develop ideas • Research independently • Evaluate evidence and present their conclusions clearly and accurately • Ask and answer scientific questions • Plan, hypothesise and predict • Design and carry out investigations • Use scientific equipment (including ICT) • Interpret results and findings • Draw inferences • Communicate tasks and experiments • Develop knowledge and understanding of the life processes of living things • Develop knowledge and understanding of the world around them
Implementation The following principles and practices underpin the implementation of the Science curriculum at Coop Academy Brownhill. • Children are taught a sequence of skills and knowledge enabling strong and relevant links to be made to previous learning. These will be referred to in lessons to develop schemes in the long-term memory. E.g. In Year 4 you made a circuit with a lamp, in Year 6 we are going to make a circuit with multiple components. • The use of knowledge organisers are to aid teachers in planning the knowledge and skills and children and parents understanding the expectations by the end of the unit. • Class books/novels are used effectively to strengthen pupils understanding of scientific topics. • High quality visits and visitors are planned to give meaning and context to knowledge that they have learnt. • Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary is taught within the unit and reinforced throughout the year. • Where possible links are made to other curriculum areas ensuring that we allow for repetition of learning in a variety of contexts. • Learning is revisited to deepen understanding. • The cooperative values and ways of being, British values and PHSE are threaded through the science curriculum to link science to their lives.
Impact • Children will become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking. Asking questions and making scientific judgements from real life experiences and experiments. • Children will develop the ability to reach clear conclusions and develop a reasoned argument to explain findings. • Children will develop their ability to work scientifically, using a variety of skills and techniques to explore and explain different subject areas. • Children will have a sound and developed knowledge of the different scientific areas and the careers that these could lead to. • Children will build an increasing understanding of scientific terminology and language. • Children will become increasingly aware of how science has shaped the world around them. • Children will develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning. • Where applicable, children will have encountered or participated in high-quality visits/visitors to further appreciate the impact of Science.
