August UPDATE from Patricia & Ken August brings us into peak visitor and summertime fun season. A quick look back at July – it was hot and bit wet, but that did not deter our visitors, as most of the area’s beaches, attractions, restaurants and accommodations were at capacity. Our two BIG events in July – 1st Block Party and 31st Annual Love Cape Ann Fundraising Auction, were well attended and a lot of fun. At the Block Party we saw record numbers of visitors and locals alike on “the (Main) street”, enjoying sights, sounds, and eats. The auction was well attended with over 200 guests experiencing the best that Cape Ann has to offer, and featured many new and exciting elements including exotic trips on: the Star Clippers – sailing in the Caribbean, Tuscany and a South Africa Photo Sa- fari. Our featured artists included Robert Gruppe, Ken Knowles, Sam Nigro, John Terelak, and Carol Loiacono, and we had well over 300 wonderful donations of all types and sizes from our many members and supporters. Stay tuned for many more items that we held back for an Online Auction in October. Looking forward, we are in full summertime events mode. Gloucester’s Downtown Association brings us the 60th annual edition of the Sidewalk Bazaar August 2-4, and festival season kicks off in Manchester with Festival by the Sea on Saturday, August 4, featuring over 100 artisans, great music and food. Country Fest is also happening that same day at Stage Fort Park. The following weekend, August 11, features Block Party #2 and the Gloucester Blues Festival, now in its 7th Year; Rockport Rotary Club’s Lobsterfest and Rockport’s annual summer fireworks display also take place on August 11. The third weekend, August 18 & 19 showcas- es the largest event on Cape Ann, Gloucester’s Waterfront Festival, featuring lobsters on Saturday! And we end the summer with the finale of our 3rd Block Party on Friday August 31, to coincide with the now iconic Schooner Festival over Labor Day weekend. And the Cape Ann Community Foundation is thrilled to announce the Online Auction of the low number Cape Ann License Plates. That’s right, numbers 1 – 100 are going to be up for sale; this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to have a coveted low number. The plate beautifully depicts our four Cape Ann com- munities of Essex, Gloucester, Manchester and Rockport. Your contribution is tax deductible, and proceeds go back to the Cape Ann non-profits through grants managed by the Cape Ann Community Foundation. MEMBER Spotlight Jean Grobe from Connections Adventure Travel Jean Grobe from Connections Adventure Travel is a 30 year resident of Gloucester with extensive travel experience. Her philoso- phy is similar to that of the late, great Anthony Bourdain who said “If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch. Move.” The trips planned by Connections Adventure Travel will have you coming home and immediately planning your next adventure. Connections Adventure Travel is a full-service agency special- izing in unique experiences around the world. Sailing, Biking, Hiking and Health and Wellness are a primary focus. Jean’s experience and connections will make sure you have the kind of trip that you can’t stop talking about. Connections’ current focus is on sailing vacations that are wonderful for Caribbean winter escapes and exploring Europe and Asia. Relax in luxury on a four or five-masted tall ship. Hoist the sails, work on the bridge with the Captain or just relax and explore each fascinating port. Interested in food, wine, culture in Southern France, Tuscany and northern Italy? We can customize a trip for a small group that will showcase the best of Europe off the beaten path. Is cycling your thing but not your partner’s? We can customize a trip that will accommodat everyone. Let’s talk soon about travel! Jean Grobe, Connections Adventure Travel, 617-803-6325. jeangrobe@comcast.net Kimberly Voltero from Plug-In Cape Ann Tours Plug-In Cape Ann Tours began in July 2017 with a vision to ex- pose visitors to the history, local lore and beautiful places often missed by both tourists and long-time visitors. The proprietor, Kimberly Voltero, is a long time Gloucester lover, having vacationed here as a child, liv- ing and owning a storefront on Bearskin Neck, and returning to live at her home near Good Harbor, after living in Paris for 10 years to work- ing at Microsoft worldwide marketing. With a dream to own a hotel by the beach, she volunteered one summer at the Chambers visitor center, and was surprised by all the history and touristic opportunities missed living and visiting here all those years. With a tendency for seasickness, and an entrepreneurial spirit, she purchased a retired CATA bus, got officially licensed in 2017, hired some local guides, and Plugged into the tourism community. The 14-passenger bus parks daily on Stacy Boulevard from April until November. Guests often say they lived here all their life and had no idea or “wish we took the tour at the beginning of our trip”! Reservations are REQUIRED, but last-minute calls are welcome. • The Best of Gloucester Tour. Scenic tour around the harbor, backshore and downtown. For those with limited time to “see it all”. Daily 1 hr. tour at 10 am or 4 pm. • Lighthouses, Beaches and More. Scenic 17-mile tour around Cape Ann, picking up in Rockport, The Paper House, Plum Cove Beach, Stage Fort Park. Perfect for those without a car, a 2 hr. tour, 3x per week. • Historic Home Hopper Tour. Beauport Sleeper McCann House or The Sargent House with sightings and stories of Hopper Houses and movie locations. 2 hr. tour, 5x per week. • The Art of Cape Ann Tour. Meet the Artists in their Studios, nestled in villages, for shoppers, creatives and HGTV lovers. Weekends, picking up at the MBTA. SPECIAL OFFER for Chamber members– Buy one scheduled tour ticket, get the 2nd one FREE. Customize your own tour – great for company outings, special occasions or groups looking for a safe ride to visit local artisans, breweries, distilleries, historic, famous and other fun places. Kimberly loves to collaborate, currently looking for businesses to resell or bundle tours, and partner- ships that create new visitor opportunities. Contact 978-381-0813 or www.plugintours.com. 23

Community News TownGreen2025 is putting together their third Sustainability Fair on September 29th at O’Maley Innovation Middle School and they’re looking for interested partners, sponsors, and vendors. TownGreen2025 is committed to working with Cape Ann and North Shore businesses and individuals who are dedicated to and interested in the following: renewable energy, carbon se- questration, weatherization (for businesses, homes, nonprofits), electric vehicles, en- ergy efficient appliances, and sustainable eating and food services. If you or you busi- ness can benefit from our fair, we’d love to have you or have you return! Our foundation could use successful part- ners like you for our cause (no cost for the day), sponsors (starting at $200) for the day and year, and vendors (starting at $200) who will take advantage of our shared platform and public attendance. Call or write Jeremy McKeen if interested! Jeremy McKeen TownGreen2025 alreadybeentaken@gmail.com (978) 979-0697 https://towngreen2025.org/ The mission of TownGreen2025 is to cre- ate a carbon footprint for Gloucester and Cape Ann that is as low as possible. We believe Cape Ann can become a model of how one can achieve clean energy and a sustainable community in a decade. This is something we owe our children and our planet. Our developing ten-year plan is multifacet- ed, and includes efforts to improve efficien- cies in energy use, increase the number of PV solar systems on homes and businesses, develop collective solar farms, and ex- plore additional clean energy options such as offshore wind farms and tidal energy systems. We will support carbon sequestra- tion (the absorption of carbon dioxide by trees) through our partner, Reforest The Tropics, which uses a unique and power- ful replanting of tropical forests in Costa Rica. And lastly we will address the need for continuing education in multiple areas of sustainability by developing a K-12 climate change education program, which can be integrated into the existing curricula of the local schools. 28
