Preface The 21st century market is subject to the laws and regulations which pose considerab- le challenges for the wood and furniture industry: more quality, shorter delivery times, technological progress and affordable prices against the background of a further diffe- rentiated society with continuously individual demands. Whereas the end of the tradi- tional market and process chains offer the opportunity fulfilling customized solutions and special requests for the customer in a globalised and networked world of today. New technologies in planning, manufacturing and communication enable to obtain cost-effective individually designed furniture and concepts of interior design. The requi- rements for the implementation is the flexibility by applying more flexible construction procedures combined with modern machine employment and communication plat- forms to redefine the relationship between trade, suppliers and producers. Thereby the economic efficiency of modern product and production planning with the quality of the applied software rises or falls. Clear statements are immensely important for the construction, the performance cha- racteristics and the conception of the software. A presumably cheap solution turns out to be an expensive and unprofitable investment later because certain requirements can- not be fulfilled finally. imos as the leading software provider for furniture and interior design sets as the first priority a high degree of investment security and planning for the customer. This compendium presents a significant contribution to inform the user about all details illustratively and clearly. The Management Board of imos Preface Herford, February 2012 Prof. Dr.-Ing. By applying a suitable variable structure, the user can definitely simplify the administrati- on of master data. The performance spectrum of the variable technology is shown on the following examples: k Part characteristics such as core material, coating and edging can be modified with variables and effects part lists, System architecture work plan and if necessary cuts. k With the variable “Colour” part lists are aligned as well as render pictures. k For example, type, shape, number, position and distances of fittings or handles can be controlled by variables. The con- sistency to part lists and CNC program is ensured. k Variable parts are often set to change e.g. from a smooth front to a frame filling front. k Variable numbers are often applied in articles and construction principles for defining recess dimension, gap, reveal or number of parts. 11

The planning grid can be aligned to a wall or free contour and divided into different planning segments. Based on the layout grid a corresponding height grid can be created to define diffe- rent planning levels. Notches on corners or angle trims can be automatically calculated and marked for the planning. The planning level plus the alignment on this planning level 14

Design assistants imos offers different methods to ensure a fast solution for the required design tasks Article Designer The Article Designer is a perfect solution to meet the require- ments for similar or dimension independent designs. This mo- dule meets the requirements in cabinet and object designs if similar furniture with different dimensions or front divisions is requested. Object Designer The design and production of individual bar and counters is a great demand for planners and designers. The Object Designer is based on the classical 2D system of the qualified designer. The basis for generating the part is one or several vertical sec- tions as well as the top view of the design. The 2D geometry data can be created with simple 2D CAD functions such as e.g. polylines. Finally, imos automatically generates the complete counter element with all details in 3D from the different 2D Frame elements views. Modification design A wide variety of functions for a fast alignment of existing designs Design and modification design have smooth and dy- namic transitions. Frequent modifications are carried out with a customer’s order even though it is apparently ready for production. Therefore all previously created pro- duction documents such as drawings, part list data and CNC programs must be checked and if necessary modi- fied in practice. Not an unusual situation Directly before production start a decision is made to pro- duce a carcase part in 22mm thickness instead of 19mm because of quality reasons. At the same time knobs are replaced by handles. Furthermore, the front and gap di- vision have changed. Now the updated production docu- ments and CNC data are required. Due to the consistent object-oriented imos software, technical draftsman and machine programmers save a lot of time by just clicking a button to adopt these constructive detail modifications. All information is automatically generated after the exe- cution of the modifications so that a high degree of flexi- bility and data security is guaranteed. Planning and design Modification functions imos offers a variety of possibilities to cover requirements of the modification design. New articles can be quickly assembled from existing parts. In addition numerous functions of alignment and modification functions are available for modifying articles and parts and their cha- racteristics. The modification functions can be recorded and saved with the article. This allows modifications, which have been carried out only once, can be immedia- tely applied on dimensional modified articles. 20

Design supported calculation Cost transparency at all levels Not only planning or design data can be used for part lists with the data structure and CNC programs, but also plan- ning or design conducted calculations. For this purpose different calculation methods are available with the imos Organizer: k For the material overhead calculation the exact quantity is determined and is calculated with material price as well as the overhead. k Not only material is calculated, but also the production time with material and production cost calculations. Own operations and variable time periods can be allocated to every element in the imos object structure. A complete work plan is order specific composed from these operations consisting of the calculated production time per production step. Cost centers with the cost set per time unit enables the calculation of the exact production time and cost. k Within the article price calculation, fixed or variable prices are added which are directly deposited in the artic- le. These prices can be linked with execution versions to be Order management able to deposit complex price tables. The calculation takes place automatically in the back- ground. The results are available in different formats and detail levels and can be transferred to e.g. Excel for further evaluation. 25

imos NET technology The eBusiness platform redefines the sales process and the manufacturing of furniture The internet based presentation and ordering system imos NET combines the internal planning processes and produc- tion with external sales tasks. imos NET is an eBusiness so- lution following the strategic approach “from sales to ma- chine”. From sales to machine Offers and designs created by using imos NET are transfer- red from the internet and are directly imported into imos CAD/CAM. From here automatically created production documents, part lists and CNC programs are available. No manual processes are involved and the job is ready for pro- duction. The software has been created on the basis of the latest internet technology standard and maintains a clear branch focus with the core technology of imos software for dynamically generating 3D furniture designs. Integration and consistency instead of interfaces Thereby a developed unique solution makes it possible to work with the flexible furniture library during the comple- te process. The advantages are obvious: The 3D design data including all parameters can be directly applied without eBusiness any restrictions in the sales planning and proposal pre- parations. Consequently, new articles and catalogs can be brought onto the market without any time delay. A significant advantage of this consistency is an error-free and accelerated order processing. The factor “Time-to-Mar- ket” is minimized and the orders have already been produc- tion-related checked with the incoming order. The solution in imos is the consistency and reliability in the process such as in the data to ensure considerable savings and optimal results. 30
