General information This codebook describes all variables of the Icelandic National Election Study (ICENES), 2009. The variables are not necessarily listed in the same order as in the questionnaire for the election study. In the following sections the names of each variable are listed along with their variable label, response scale / value label and additional information if require. Here is an example: Variable name Variable label Gender - Gender of the respondent. Gender of respondent was documented according to information from the sample. 1. Male Response scale / value labels 2. Female In those cases were the question asked is not used as a variable label, the question (if applicable) is stated in the explanation for that variable. 2
Variables: Information about the respondent and the dataset User_Id - Id number of the respondent. The first part of the id number is constructed from the date of the election (year, month and date) and the second half a unique number assigned to each respondent. The first four numbers are the year of the election (2009), the next two indicate which month the election took place (04=April) and next two after that the date of the election (25). Last five numbers are unique numbers assigned to each respondent. Range: 2009042563565 - 2009042573208 dataset - Dataset. This variable identifies which dataset for each election year. String variable: ICENES2009 gender - Gender of the respondent. Gender of respondent was registered according to information from the sample. 1. Male 2. Female yob - Respondent‘s year of birth. Respondent’s year of birth was registered according to information from the sample. Range: 1929 - 1991 age - Respondent‘s age Age was calculated only from the respondent’s year of birth; not from the exact date. Range: 18 – 80 years old NOTE: The research team asked for a sample were it was guaranteed that all respondents had reached the age 18 and that only Icelandic citizens were included in the sample. Still 10 persons replied that they were not eligible to vote in the study 2009. Two of them were born in 1991 and could therefore possible not have reached the voting age 18. It is possible that the remaining eight persons who said that they were not eligible to vote were foreign citizens, but as a question about citizenship was not asked, the research team doesn’t have any means to verify that. elecdist - Respondents‘electoral district. Registered from the sample, using the postal codes and address (in Reykjavik north and Reykjavik south districts) of the respondent’s legal residence, for the recoding process. 1. Constituency if Reykjavik north geoarea - Residence – geographical area The division of respondents into geographical areas is based on the community codes for the respondents‘legal address. The recoding is explained in the note below. 1. Capital area (Postcodes: 101 to 170, 200 to 225, 270) 2. Sudurnes (postcodes: 190, 230 to 260) 3. West (postcodes: 300 to 371) 4. West fjords (postcodes: 380 to 470, 523) 5. Northwest (postcodes: 500 to 520, 530 to 570) 6. Northeast (postcodes: 580 to 685, 715) 7. East (postcodes: 690 to 710, 720 to 765, 785) 8. South (postcodes: 780 to 781, 800 to 900) urban - Urban or rural residency This variable was recoded based in respondents‘postal codes. The recoding was done using information from Statistics Iceland about population by postcodes January 1, 2009. 1. Rural area or a small village (less than 200 inhabitants) 2. Small or middle-sized town (200 to 20.000 inhabitants) 3. Suburb of a big town or city (between 20.000 to 100.000 inhabitants; for example Gardabaer, Hafnarfjordur and Seltjarnarnes) 4. In a city (more than 100.000 inhabitants or only those that live in Reykjavik, the capital) intervnrday - Number of days between the election and the interview The number of days between the general elections the 25th of April 2009 and the interview, were calculated using the variables intervmonth and intervday. Range: 12 - 128 elecday - Election day The date of the election, 25th of April 2009. Election day: 25 elecmonth - Election month The month of the election, 25th of April 2009. Election month: 4.
